Southwest monsoon likely to withdraw on Oct 26: IMD

0

The southwest monsoon is likely to withdraw on October 26, the same day when the northeast monsoon is likely to commence over southeast peninsular India, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The northeast monsoon brings in rains mostly to Tamil Nadu, parts of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.

“With likely setting in of north-easterly winds in the lower tropospheric levels over Bay of Bengal and extreme south Peninsular India, the southwest monsoon is likely to withdraw from the entire country around October 26. Simultaneously, the northeast monsoon rains are also likely to commence over the southeast peninsular India from around October 26,” IMD said in a release.

As against the normal date of October 15 when the southwest monsoon completely withdraws from across India, this time the process is delayed. The commencement of withdrawal too had started on October 6 against the normal date of September 17.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon withdrawal line continues to pass through Kohima, Silchar, Krishna Nagar, Baripada, Malkangiri, Nalgonda, Bagalkote, Vengurla.

Conditions are becoming favourable for further withdrawal of southwest monsoon from remaining parts of northeast India; entire north Bay of Bengal; remaining parts of West Bengal; some parts of Central Bay of Bengal; remaining parts of Odisha; some parts of Andhra Pradesh; some more parts of Telangana; entire Goa; some more parts of Karnataka and some more parts of Central Arabian Sea around October 23.

Low pressure systems over Kerala and Tamil Nadu near the Arabian Sea and another over Odisha and Andhra Pradesh coast near Bay of Bengal had delayed the process, IMD had said earlier.

Because of the low-pressure systems and cyclonic circulations Kerala, Tamil Nadu and parts of Karnataka have experienced heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.

T20 World Cup: I’m just happy to be able to contribute to the team today, says Wiese

0

Namibia all-rounder David Wiese said he was happy to contribute to his side’s come-from-behind win over the Netherlands at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Wednesday. He added that he wanted to prove his worth and have a good impression in his first tournament with Namibia.

“It’s definitely up there in terms of just it’s always nice to see it through to the end to make sure you get your team over the line. Like I said, leading into the tournament, it’s my first tournament playing for Namibia, so you always want to make a good impression and show the guys and prove your worth. It’s been a bit of a lean patch for me leading into this tournament, so I’m just happy to be able to contribute to the team today and get it over the line and get the win for the team,” said Wiese in the post-match press conference.

Chasing 165, Namibia were 52/3 in 8.2 overs. Wiese shared a counter-attacking stand of 93 runs in 51 balls with captain Gerhard Erasmus en route of an unbeaten 66 off 40 balls to take Namibia over the line for their first-ever win in the men’s T20 World Cup. Apart from his knock, Wiese also scalped the wicket of Roelof van der Merwe.

“When we got in there, we were a little bit behind the eight ball, and the momentum was with them. We had to take a bit of a punt there to get one or two big overs to try and get the win. Lucky for us it paid off. We decided to take it down with the wind type play, but smart in that aspect, and it just worked out for us today,” said Wiese on being asked about the approach for the chase.

Asked about how he adapted to the pitch while leading the way for Namibia with the bat, Wiese, who previously represented South Africa, explained, “I think it’s a wicket where you need to take your time a little bit more to get in just to get used to the pace. It skids a little bit more. Most of the wickets in the UAE do skid through a little bit more. It’s a little more difficult to start off quite quickly.”

“So you’ve just got to take a little bit of that pressure and give yourself a bit of time and know that the boundaries, the ball flies over your head, there’s always a wind that’s pushing towards the boundary. Once you take your time and you get in, you can always catch up towards the end.”

Talking about the importance of the win in Namibia cricket, Wiese termed it ‘massive’. “It’s the first ever win for Namibia in the T20 World Cup. It’s a proud nation. Namibia is a passionate nation. They love sport there. To be able to give this one back to the fans, especially after our subpar performance against Sri Lanka the other night, just to come back in a performance like this and still keep our hopes up in the tournament.”

“We’ve got one more game left against Ireland. If we can pull off a win over there, we could find ourself in the next stage of the tournament, which would be absolutely amazing for Namibia cricket,” signed off Wiese.

T20 World Cup: Hasaranga, Nissanka and bowlers secure dominant win for Sri Lanka

A wonderful counter-attack by Wanindu Hasaranga (71 off 47 balls) and Pethum Nissanka (61 off 47 balls) followed by a clinical bowling performance propelled Sri Lanka to secure a dominant 70-run win over Ireland in in a Group A match of Round 1 in the ICC men’s T20 World Cup at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium here on Wednesday.

The win also means that the 2014 champions have all but confirmed their spot in the Super 12 stage of the tournament. The victory was set up by half-centuries from Hasaranga and Nissanka sharing a stand of 123 runs for the fourth wicket.

The duo lifted Sri Lanka from 8/3 in the first 10 balls to 171/7 in 20 overs. In reply, Ireland was all out for 101 in 18.3 overs as the Sri Lanka pacers struck early before the spinners stemmed the run-flow in middle overs as Ireland lost their last seven wickets for just 16 runs.

Chasing 172, Ireland lost openers Kevin O’Brien (5) and Paul Stirling (7) in 2.3 overs. While O’Brien top-edged to short fine leg off Chamika Karunaratne in the first over, Maheesh Theekshana dismissed Stirling in a similar manner in the third over. Two overs later, Gareth Delany was bowled by a googly from Wanindu Hasaranga.
Curtis Campher and Andy Balbirnie shared a stand of 53 runs for the fourth wicket before the former was clean bowled by Theekshana in the 13th over.

That started the downfall of Ireland as Harry Tector (3), Neil Rock (1) and Mark Adair (2) fell in quick succession. With Balbirnie (41) slicing to point off Lahiru Kumara in the 16th over, the writing was clear on the wall for Ireland. Karunaratne and Dushmantha Chameera took the remaining wickets to secure Sri Lanka’s second win of the tournament.

Earlier, Sri Lanka lost Kusal Perera without troubling the scorers on the second ball of the innings. In the next over, pacer Joshua Little bowled Dinesh Chandimal (6) and Avishka Fernando on back-to-back deliveries to put Sri Lanka in deep trouble at 8 for three in 1.4 overs.

From there, Hasaranga and Nissanka staged an excellent fightback for Sri Lanka, stitching a 123-run partnership in 82 balls. Hasaranga was more aggressive of the two, smashing off-spinner Simi Singh for four consecutive boundaries in the final over of power-play. Their counter-attack coupled with exquisite shots rattled Ireland, who resorted to bowling wider lines and got dispatched for runs.

Hasaranga brought up his maiden T20I half-century in 38 balls with a brace off Craig Young in the 13th over. Nissanka brought up his half-century in the 16th over. But on the very next ball, a visibly exhausted Hasaranga sliced to short third man off Mark Adair.

Though Bhanuka Rajapaksa (1) and Karunaratne (2) fell cheaply, Nissanka struck two more boundaries before toe-ending behind to the keeper to become Little’s fourth scalp of the day. Dasun Shanaka then struck a six and four on the last two balls of the innings to remain unbeaten on 21 off just 11 balls, taking Sri Lanka beyond 170.

Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 171/7 in 20 overs (Wanindu Hasaranga 71, Pethum Nissanka 61, Josh Little 4/23, Mark Adair 2/35) against Ireland 101 all out (Andy Balbirnie 41, Curtis Campher 24, Maheesh Theekshana 3/17, Lahiru Kumara 2/22) by 70 runs.

0

After a pandemic-induced lull, pay rises are making a comeback. With India projected a salary increase of 9.3 per cent next year, the country is set to be the highest payer in Asia Pacific, according to a report.

This is an increase of 8 per cent compared to 2021, revealed the latest report by advisory, broking and solutions company Willis Towers Watson.

India is followed by Sri Lanka (5.5 per cent), China (6 per cent), Indonesia (6.9 per cent), and Singapore (3.9 per cent) for the highest salary increase for 2021 in the Asia Pacific region.

Pointing towards a much-anticipated economic recovery, a majority (52.2 per cent) of companies in India have projected a positive business revenue outlook for the next 12 months, up from 37 per cent in Q4 2020.

This translates in increased hiring across businesses with 30 per cent of companies planning to hire in the next 12 months. This is almost three times more than last year.

The survey also shows that a large part of hiring across sectors is likely to happen within critical functions such as engineering (57.5 per cent), information technology (53.4 per cent), technically skilled trades (34.2 per cent), sales (37 per cent) and finance (11.6 per cent), and these jobs will command a high salary.

In addition, attrition rates in India, both voluntary and involuntary, have been lower as compared to other countries in the region. The voluntary attrition rate was 8.9 per cent and involuntary attrition rate was 3.3 per cent.

“Increased business optimism is clearly translating into higher salary budgets and increased hiring activity. The pandemic was a watershed moment in the way organisations plan their people spend,” said Rajul Mathur, Consulting Leader India, Talent and Rewards, Willis Towers Watson, in a statement.

“While talent attraction and retention remain a challenge, the core employee value proposition will now need to go beyond just competitive salaries, and increasingly focus on a wider range of benefits, wellness, upskilling and the overall employee experience. This trend is likely to reshape the people spend and total rewards philosophy in India going forward,” he added.

The high-tech sector in expected to see the highest salary increase at 9.9 per cent in 2022, followed by the consumer products and retail sector at 9.5 per cent, and manufacturing at 9.30 per cent.

On the other hand, the energy sector received amongst the lowest actual salary increase in 2021 at 7.7 per cent. The projected salary of the energy sector in 2022 is also the lowest at 7.9 per cent.

The bi-annual survey was conducted online between May and June 2021. A total of 1,405 companies representing a cross section of industries from 13 markets in Asia Pacific.

The survey has 435 Indian companies participating this year.

Madhuri Dixit shares quirky dance reel that many women will relate with

Madhuri Dixit Nene is easily India’s one of the biggest and most loved actresses. Be it the iconic track ‘Ek Do Teen’ from ‘Tezaab’ where she revolutionised dance in Bollywood or her work in films like ‘Anjaam’, ‘Koyla’, ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ and ‘Pukar’, the actress has always enthralled the audience and has enjoyed their undivided attention.

Recently, she shared a quirky Instagram reel where she can be seen dancing her heart out. Well, dancing comes naturally to Madhuri and she makes the perfect use of this skill in the video.

Captioning the reel, Madhuri wrote, “It has pockets ?? #alwaystrending #reels #reelsinstagram.”

Dressed in a royal blue pocket dress paired with beige coloured stilettos, the actress grooved to the beats of the hugely popular song from TikTok ‘It has pockets’. She rounded up her look with minimalist earrings and open wavy tresses. The reel got a thundering applause from her fans as they were overjoyed to see their idol treating them with her impeccable talent of dancing once again, this time on their phone screens.

The reel clicked especially with the women of Instagram as having a pocket-friendly (pun intended) dress is a rare feat in women’s clothing. The absence of pockets in their dresses results in a lot of struggles for women in terms of carrying around their stuff. Madhuri’s quirky reel not just brings a chuckle on the audience’s faces but also comes with a strong relatability factor to all the women out there.
