Rashmika, Yash channel social media power for Kannada cinema

With ‘Forbes’ magazine rating Rashmika Mandanna as South Indian cinema’s most influential social media star, and Yash of ‘KGF’ fame ranking No. 3, it’s a moment of celebration for Kannada film fans.

It’s also indicative of the growing pan-Indian visibility of Sandalwood film stars such as Rashmika, Yash and Kichcha Sudeep. Rashmika, in fact, has left behind her Tollywood compatriots Samantha Ruth Prabhu, who is ranked No. 4, and Allu Arjun, who follows at No. 5. The Kannada star’s social media handles, as a result, have been inundated with congratulatory messages from her fans.

The rankings were based on views, likes and comments garnered by posts and videos shared by celebrities of the Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada film industries.

Rashmika’s social media content centres around her forthcoming movies and her takes on fashion. Yash, who’ll be seen soon in the ‘KGF’ sequel, posts pictures of his children and family celebrations, and of his travels and film projects. Both stars have ensured that the footprint of Kannada cinema extends much beyond its immediate market.

Neha Sharma-starrer ‘Aafat-E-Ishq’ trailer out

The trailer of Neha Sharma-starrer ‘Aafat-E-Ishq’ was released on Monday and the actress says it was an “acting 101” for her.

Neha said, “It was acting 101 for me as my character, Lallo is so different from anything I have portrayed before. Lallo is from a small town in the India heartland, so I had to work hard on getting the local dialect and Hindi diction right. I also had to go through a makeover as I will be seen in a completely de-glam role. However, it was one of the most satisfying characters to play as Lallo is so unique and one of a kind.”

Produced by Zee Studios and directed by Indrajit Nattoji, ‘Aafat-E-Ishq’ is a dark dramedy with supernatural elements and a whodunnit twist.

It is the official remake of ‘Liza, the Fox-Fairy’, a Hungarian film that was a huge success internationally and won numerous awards at various film festivals.

Director Indrajit Nattoji said, “Aafat-E-Ishq is my Indian heartland version of ‘Liza, the Fox-Fairy’. I can safely say that ‘Aafat-E-Ishq’ is an adaptation and not a remake. A reboot with some new twists, eclectic original music, and quirky small-town Indian characters. I hope the film catches the audience’s imagination and succeeds in entertaining them, something we all need as we slowly emerge from a devastating pandemic.”

The film releases on ZEE5 on October 29.

Nisha Rawal on playing an insecure woman in ‘Meet’

Actress Nisha Rawal’s character of ‘Masum’ in the show ‘Meet’ has managed to stir a sense of excitement amongst the audience.

She revealed how she is enjoying learning how to portray the nuances of an insecure woman, who has had a lot to deal with in her life and feels that there’s much more to her character than what meets the eye. Being able to relate to ‘Masum’, Nisha is all the more pleased to be essaying the role.

Speaking about her character, Nisha says: “The last show I did 8 years back was with Shashi Sumeet Productions and my comeback on TV as an actor is also happening with the same production house. That makes ‘Meet’ even more special. I must mention that it has always been a wonderful experience working with them and I think that’s why in my journey so far, they have had a major role to play. Also, the character that I am playing is an antagonist, but I wouldn’t say that ‘Masum’ is a dreadful personality.”

The show presents the story of ‘Meet’ (Ashi Singh), who mirrors several women across the nation that are fighting societal norms of gender roles regarding work and responsibilities.

Nisha throws more light on her character, saying: “I think every person deals with their ups and downs in different ways and that’s why they react in certain ways in certain scenarios. ‘Masum’ is one such person who has had her share of insecurities and that keeps acting as a catalyst to making her appear as the villain. Of course, there are shades to every character, and I feel getting to play a role like this is quite amazing.”

‘Meet’ airs on Zee TV.

NASA’s Perseverance captures panoramic view of Martian ridges

NASA’s Perseverance rover has clicked a panorama view of the “South Seitah” region of Mars’ Jezero Crater, offering clues to the area’s mysterious past.

Composed of 84 individual enhanced-colour images that were later stitched together, the mosaic was taken on September 12 (the 201st Martian day, or sol, of the mission) by the Mastcam-Z camera system as the rover was parked on an elevated overlook just outside its entry point into South Seitah, NASA said in a statement.

The mosaic was taken at the highest magnification and stretched to allow subtle colour differences in the rocks and soil to be visible to the naked eye. Left of centre and halfway up the image are the gray, darker gray, and Swiss-coffee-coloured rocky outcrops of the ridge nicknamed “Faillefeu” (after a medieval abbey in the French Alps).

“This panorama is spectacular because you feel like you are there. It shows not only the incredible scale of the area, but also all the exploration possibilities South Seitah has to offer. With multiple intriguing rocky outcrops and ridgelines, each one is seemingly better than the last. If it’s not a field geologist’s dream, it’s pretty close,” said Jorge Nunez, an astrobiologist and planetary scientist working on the science team of NASA’s Perseverance rover.

The distinctly thin, at times tilted layering evident in several of Faillefeu’s rocks would have been high on the science team’s list of things to explore, because tilted layering suggests the possibility of tectonic activity.

But similar features — along with other compelling geology — were visible on another ridgeline that the mission’s science team opted to explore instead.

The “Martre Ridge” (named after a commune in southeastern France) is like Faillefeu except three times as big. It contains not only low-lying flat rocks near the base of the ridge, but also rocky outcrops with thin layering at the base and massive caprocks near and at the ridge’s peak.

The caprocks are usually made of harder, more resistant material than those stacked below them, suggesting potential differences in how the material was deposited.

“Another cool thing about this image is that one can also see in the background, on the right, the path Perseverance took as it made its way to South Seitah,” Nunez said.

“And finally, there is the peak of ‘Santa Cruz’ far in the distance. We’re currently not planning on going there; it’s too far out of our way. But it is geologically interesting, reinforcing just how much great stuff the team gets to pick and choose from here at Jezero. It also looks cool,” he added.

The Mars 2020 Perseverance mission is part of NASA’s Moon to Mars exploration approach, which includes Artemis missions to the Moon that will help prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet.

All he would be looking for is to win the T20 competition: Gambhir on Kohli

0

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir said that captain Virat Kohli will be looking to win the ICC mens T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman. He added that he was sure the Indian team would look to do well as India havent won the event after winning the inaugural edition in 2007. The tournament marks the last time Kohli will be leading India in T20Is.

“All he would be looking for is to win the T20 competition and I’m sure that the entire team will be looking to do that as well because it’s been a long 14 years of wait. I’m sure that it’s not only about Virat Kohli that he’s going to be captaining India for the last time in the T20 format, it’s about just winning the tournament, and him winning as captain will be icing on the cake,” Gambhir said on Follow The Blues show on Star Sports.

Talking about former India captain MS Dhoni’s inclusion as the mentor for the men’s T20 World Cup, Gambhir reckoned that Dhoni will be sharing his vast experience with the youngsters appearing for the first time in the marquee event.

“To share his experience with some of the young guys who are playing their first World Cup, which is going to be very important because playing in the World Cup is a completely different piece. So, you would need that experienced someone who’s been there done that. So, MS could definitely try and share all his experiences with some of the young cricketers.”

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan named pacer Jasprit Bumrah as his x-factor in the India” team. “When we talk about Varun Chakravarthy, it’s clear that he will do really well because he has mystery and also is in top form. But according to me in terms of bowling, there is only one X factor and that is Bumrah. T’ere can’t be a bigger X factor than Bumrah in any other team.”

India will be in action in the first warm-up match against England in Dubai on Monday. The 2007 champions will open their Super 12 campaign against Pakistan on October 24 at the Dubai International Stadium.

Facebook hiring 10,000 people to build metaverse

0

Facebook has announced to hire 10,000 people to help the social network build the metaverse — a new phase of interconnected virtual experiences using technologies like virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR).

According to the company, the next computing platform has the potential to help unlock access to new creative, social and economic opportunities.

“We’re announcing a plan to create 10,000 new high-skilled jobs within the European Union (EU) over the next five years,” said Nick Clegg, VP Global Affair at Facebook.

“Beyond emerging tech talent, the EU also has an important role to play in shaping the new rules of the internet,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

No one company will own and operate the metaverse. Like the internet, its key feature will be its openness and interoperability.

Bringing this to life will take collaboration and cooperation across companies, developers, creators and policymakers.

For Facebook, it will also require continued investment in product and tech talent, as well as growth across the business.

“As we begin the journey of bringing the metaverse to life, the need for highly specialized engineers is one of Facebook’s most pressing priorities,” Clegg said.

Facebook in September announced that it will invest $50 million to partner with the organisation to responsibly build the metaverse.

The “metaverse” is a set of virtual spaces where one can create and explore with other people who aren’t in the same physical space.
