Star Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya has lavished praise on MS Dhoni while sharing his close relationship with the former captain and the current mentor of the national team.

Pandya explained how and when Dhoni provided him the kind of support which was required at certain stages during his career.

“He knows what kind of an individual I am. He knows me quite deep. I am very close to him. He is the only person who can make me calm. When all this happened, he knew that I needed support. I just needed a shoulder, which he provided multiple times in my cricketing career,” Pandya told ESPNcricinfo.com.

“I never saw him as MS Dhoni the greatest. For me, Mahi is my brother. I respect and admire the fact that he was there when I needed him the most,” he added.

This would be India’s first World Cup campaign since Dhoni retired in 2020 and the side will open its campaign against Pakistan on October 24 here.

“The biggest so far, I will say, because this time I don’t have Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Everything is on my shoulders — I like to think that way because it gives me an added challenge. It is going to be exciting, a cracker of a tournament,” said Pandya, whose fitness is a concern heading into the event as he did not bowl in the IPL.

Read Excerpts:

Q: Are you looking forward to on-ground fashion events and the energy that comes with physical shows and appearances?

A: I am I mean, I think that it’s been a while that we’ve all been at home and the livelihood of artisans, designers make-up artist, hairdressers has suffered. Everyone’s looking forward to being backed and last but not least me; there’s a different energy, of course.

Q: The outfit chosen for you at the show, how does it complement your style?

A: I really think that the outfit complimented my body type because it sort of showed off my arms which are very toned and strong. I’ve been working on them. So I’m happy that they chose, an off-shoulder outfit. The beautiful train, added length which I require a little bit off. So, I think it was very feminine, and I think the silhouette was a good one for me.

Q: What are your travel essentials?

A: Wetwipes, sanitiser, spare masks and water. I would say a book but I haven’t read a book since I’ve become a mother. I would say iPad, cotton wool for ears, and a lollipop.

Q: A book, a movie, the gym, or a night out. What is your perfect way to unwind?

A: If you really work out some point in the day, it just helps you to wind down. So I really believe in physical exercise. Well, I love massages and I really enjoy good conversations with good friends.

Q: How do you support sustainable fashion?

A: One should reuse their clothes. You don’t need to buy new clothes, all the time. We share clothes, among friends with similar body types, all the time, whether it’s children’s clothes as well as my clothes. Recycle, you know, if a pair of jeans have started to fray, cut them into shorts, you can also T-Shirts in a number of different ways. So you can recycle, use materials that are good for the planet, don’t use plastic and things like this.

Q: What is an experience in your life that you’re waiting to have?

A: A goodnight sleep will be great.

NZ increases support to countries vulnerable to climate emergency: PM

0

The New Zealand government is making a four-fold increase in the support it provides to countries most vulnerable to the climate emergency, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Monday.

New Zealand will provide NZ$1.3 billion ($921 million) over four years to support countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, she said in the lead up to the UN climate conference in Glasgow, reports Xinhua news agency.

The investment will support clean energy projects in developing countries, ensure buildings are able to withstand more damaging storms, crops are resilient to droughts, floods and new pests, and communities are protected from sea level rise and storm surges, said the Prime Minister.

Minister of Climate Change James Shaw confirmed that at least half of the new climate finance commitment, which covers the period 2022 to 2025, will go towards supporting New Zealand’s Pacific neighbours who are already experiencing rising sea levels and more extreme weather.

“For these countries, the impacts of climate change that scientists have been warning us about for decades are not academic, or a distant threat; they are happening right now,” Shaw said.

Stoinis should be fit for opening match against South Africa: Hazlewood

0

Australian pace bowler Josh Hazlewood has said that all-rounder Marcus Stoinis — a regular in coach Justin Langer’s T20 squad in recent times — is recovering from a hamstring injury suffered during the Indian Premier League (IPL) and should be fit for the team’s opening ICC T20 World Cup match against South Africa on October 23.

Giving an update on Stoinis, who played 10 IPL games for the Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals, Hazlewood said that the 32-year-old had “just played 18 holes of golf”.

“I guess that’s a positive sign, I think he seems pretty good, I know he didn’t bowl the last game he played but he played as a batsman and felt pretty good I think,” Hazlewood told SEN’s Gilly and Goss on Monday.

“We’ll see over the next few days, we’ve got a few warm-up games and a few training sessions,” added Hazlewood, who has often been overlooked for selection in T20 cricket, but is keen to make a mark at the World Cup in the UAE and Oman.

“For me, the T20 stuff is just about playing games and learning all the time and developing my arsenal. I’ve been able to do that over the last two years, and leading into the 2016 T20 World Cup, I hardly played a game for a number of years. It’s just good going in with a bit of form and a bit of continuity as well in that format,” said Hazlewood.

Hazlewood added that the players were raring for some good action on the field after spending time in mandatory quarantine.

“I think the keenness is a big statement, and there are a lot of guys chomping at the bit to get out there.

“Patty (Cummins) and Matty (Wade), these guys haven’t played much cricket over the last few months, and obviously Steve Smith and Davey Warner have been watching a bit of cricket the last few weeks instead of playing.”

Australia have never won a T20 World Cup title.

Kerala couple arrives on a cooking vessel for marriage

0

Nothing could deter a young couple in Kerala as they braved the floods to reach in time for their marriage, travelling nearly 500 metres on a traditional copper cooking vessel for their wedding held in a local temple at Thakazhi near Alappuzha on Monday morning.

Since torrential rains hit the state on Friday afternoon which continued partly till Sunday, the Kuttanad area of Alappuzha had submerged due to severe rains, the roads in the area were completely submerged on Monday.

The bride Aishwarya and the groom Rahul, both hailing from the same locality, had fixed their wedding to be held in the local temple at Thakazhi.

On Monday, things went for a toss as by then the roads had disappeared and water was flowing all over the area.

Generally in Kerala, the bride and groom come to a temple or the wedding hall in a car but it was not the case for Rahul and Aishwarya.

All decked up to reach the temple, the couple came into a traditional rice cooking copper vessel and arrived at the temple and as per the planned ‘muhurthum’ (auspicious time for a wedding) to become husband and wife.

There were a handful of relatives present and the marriage hall was flooded, too, but not the stage where the marriage ceremony took place in presence of the temple priest.

“We were not scared to travel in the vessel,” said an excited Rahul while Aishwarya said, “We all are happy that the wedding took place at the planned auspicious time.”

A relative who organised the ‘vessel’ trip said, “Some areas near the temple were almost submerged but we managed to bring both the bride and the groom on time.”
