Amazon to retire Prime Now, allows 2-hour deliveries on main app

0

Amazon has announced to shut down its standalone Prime Now delivery app, and the two-hour delivery options will now be available on its main app and website.

The company said that in India, Japan, and Singapore, it has already moved the Prime Now experience onto Amazon and retired the Prime Now app and website.

“In the US, we began making two-hour delivery from Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market available on Amazon in 2019. Globally, we’ll move our third-party partners and local stores to the Amazon shopping experience before the Prime Now app and website are retired later this year,” informed Stephenie Landry, vice president of grocery at Amazon.

Prime Now was launched back in 2014.

Now, there will be one convenient app for shopping, tracking orders, and contacting customer service.

“The same ultrafast delivery on everyday essentials, gifts, toys, high-quality groceries, and more you’ve come to expect with Prime Now and now available on Amazon,” Landry said in a statement on Friday.

The company said that the feedback from customers who have shopped two-hour delivery on Amazon has been overwhelmingly positive, and it’s a natural next step to simplify the ultrafast delivery experience globally.

In the US, customers can now easily add items from their Alexa shopping list to their Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods Market shopping cart.

New Covid rapid test kit receives scientific seal of approval

A team of researchers has validated a faster, cheaper Covid-19 test that could kickstart the expansion of more widespread rapid testing.

The study suggests that the microchip real-time PCR test can provide accurate results in 30 minutes and requires 10 times fewer reagents than the tube-based RT-PCR tests approved by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“This research offers a cheaper, faster alternative to the most reliable and sensitive test currently used worldwide, without sacrificing sensitivity and reproducibility,” said researcher Peter Unrau from the Simon Fraser University.

The researchers suggest the test could be deployed in remote locations, clinics, and airports due to its ease of use and portability.

For the study, published in The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics, the research team first evaluated test sensitivity in the lab.

Then the test kit was sent to a clinical team at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada to determine its ability to detect Covid-19 in patient samples.

The microchip PCR Covid-19 test kit results aligned with hospital testing results — demonstrating its effectiveness.

The kit comes preloaded with Covid-19 primers and probes making it easy to use, reducing the potential for user error, and improving the reliability of test results.

The detection kits developed by Lumex Instruments Canada and validated by Unrau’s team are low power (100 watts), compact, lightweight, and available internationally.

Zareen Khan: Was told in our industry it’s a perception that pretty girls can’t act

Zareen Khan recalls being rejected from a film for looking the way she does. The Bollywood actress says she was bluntly told about the industry perception that pretty girls cannot act.

“It’s not just me who has been typecast. I feel every person in this industry gets typecast. When I came out with ‘Veer’ I was typecast as a pretty girl, a girl next door — just comparisons and everything. So, I did not get enough chances. (Actually) Did not get a chance at all after that. (I was called) Fat, and this and that,” Zareen told IANS.

She says her dance number “Character dheela” in the Salman Khan-starrer “Ready” somewhat helped in changing perceptions. “People were like, ‘she can look like that also. She has lost weight, nice’. Then came ‘Hate Story’ and people said she is so hot,” she recalled.

Still, Zareen was rejected when she tried looking for roles that would give her something meaningful to portray.

“After that when I tried meeting people for not so ‘hot’ roles or roles that would need me to play something meaningful or serious, I was rejected and I was out and out told in our industry it’s a perception that pretty girls can’t act,” she said.

“What the hell does that even mean? If you find me pretty and you are not going to give me a chance that is so unfair,” she added.

The 34-year-old took a break from all things related to being glamorous.

“I really want to make a conscious effort for people to see me as more than a glamorous face. I want them to see my potential, credit, give me due for my potential and give me a chance. More than anything else, to give me an opportunity to show that I am more than just about looking hot and being pretty,” she stressed.

“That is the reason I took a bit of break. I was reading a lot of scripts and I wanted to do something that would portray me away from the glamorous image. So, that people can change that image about me,” she concluded.

In her new release “Hum Bhi Akele Tum Bhi Akele”, Zareen portrays a character she has never done in her career of over a decade. She plays a lesbian in the film, which released digitally a while back.

Dhoni taught me how to take responsibility: Chahar

0

Pace bowler Deepak Chahar, who looks certain to tour Sri Lanka with India’s white-ball squad in the proposed series in July, has credited Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper, MS Dhoni, for helping him become a powerplay bowler.

“Mahi Bhai has made me a powerplay bowler. He always says ‘you are my powerplay bowler’. He, most of the time gives me first over of the match. I have been scolded by him a lot, but I know those talks and that guidance has benefitted me a lot as well and helped me grow as a bowler,” said Chahar while speaking to the Times of India.

Chahar bowled with the new ball for CSK in the postponed Indian Premier League and was among wickets in a couple of matches. He took two four-wicket hauls and the fact that Dhoni allowed him to bowl his entire spell in one, initial spell helped him make use of his strength which is to move the ball.

He picked four wickets for 13 runs in four overs against Punjab Kings and then four for 29 against Kolkata Knight Riders.

“It was a long-cherished dream of mine to play under Mahi Bhai. I have learned a lot under his captaincy. I have taken my game to another level under his guidance. He has always backed me. He taught me how to take responsibility. There is no one in my team (CSK) who bowls three overs in the powerplay. I do that. That’s because of Mahi Bhai. Bowling the first over for a team is not an easy job. With time, I have improved and learned how to control the flow of runs, especially in T20s,” Chahar added.

Smart toilet to analyse stool for health problems

0

Researchers are developing a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool that can be added to the standard toilet to help analyze patients’ stool and give gastroenterologists the information they need to provide appropriate treatment.

The new technology could assist in managing chronic gastrointestinal issues such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), indicates the study selected for presentation at Digestive Disease Week (DDW) 2021.

“Patients often can’t remember what their stool looks like or how often they have a bowel movement, which is part of the standard monitoring process,” said researcher Deborah Fisher from Duke University in the US.

“The Smart Toilet technology will allow us to gather the long-term information needed to make a more accurate and timely diagnosis of chronic gastrointestinal problems,” Fisher added.

The technology can be retrofitted within the pipes of an existing toilet. Once a person has a bowel movement and flushes, the toilet will take an image of the stool within the pipes.

The data collected over time will provide a gastroenterologist a better understanding of a patient’s stool form (i.e., loose, normal, or constipated) and the presence of blood, allowing them to diagnose the patient and provide the right treatment for their condition.

To develop the artificial intelligence image analysis tool for the Smart Toilet, researchers analyzed 3,328 unique stool images found online or provided by research participants.

All images were reviewed and annotated by gastroenterologists according to the Bristol Stool Scale, a common clinical tool for classifying stool.

Using a computationally efficient approach to convolutional neural networks, which is a type of deep learning algorithm that can analyze images, researchers found that the algorithm accurately classified the stool from 85.1 percent of the time; gross blood detection had an accuracy of 76.3 percent.

Elli AvRam: I’m glad seeing other foreigners doing well in Indian films

Actress Elli Avram, who is originally from Stockholm, Sweden, says with time more foreigners are being accepted in Bollywood and getting better roles.

The actress, who has been seen in films such as “Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon”, “Mickey Virus” and “Malang”, says many people around the world “die” to be part of Bollywood.

“I’m so glad seeing other foreigners doing so well and getting so much love and appreciation in the Indian film industry. Bollywood is something so many people around the world live and die for, literally! I’m one of them,” she told.

The actress says she always wanted to be part of Bollywood. “I just fell in love with its cinema since my childhood and I always looked for that one foreigner actress who could inspire me and give me hope, since I dreamt so hard of working in Bollywood, despite not being Indian. And I’ll never forget when I watched ‘Love Aaj Kal’, and there was a Brazilian girl who played an Indian character (refers to Giselli Monteiro in the 2009 release). As I walked out of the cinema in Stockholm, I just said to myself, ‘if she can do it, then so can I’,” she says.

The actress says the film industry has changed a lot since she became part of it.

“From the day I entered Bollywood till now, things have opened up and changed quite a bit. I’ve got many offers where I sometimes have had to choose which one to do, due to dates clashing. When that happens, I feel a lot of gratitude because it tells me your hard work and talent pay off in the end,” she says.

“I’ve got something new I’m excited about, work-wise. Apart from that, I’m currently questioning a lot of things and working on my personal growth as a human being. I’m not scared about surviving in this industry, I’d say I’m more scared about how to survive as a free human being in this world,” she says.

Corona’s evil cousin ‘Black Fungus’ claims 100 in Maha: Tope

0

As with the Covid-19 scourge, Maharashtra leads in the number of deaths and cases of the dreaded dark cousin of Coronavirus — Mucormycosis, or commonly known as ‘Black Fungus’.

After the first case was detected in the third week of April, the state has now recorded a staggering 1,500 Mucormycosis infections to date, said Health Minister Rajesh Tope.

“Of the 1,500 cases, there have been 100 deaths till now On May 21, we have declared it as a Notifiable Disease under the Epidemic Diseases Act, making it compulsory to report each case of the Black Fungus to the state health department,” Tope told IANS.

Besides Maharashtra, other states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Telangana, Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, and Haryana have also proclaimed it as a Notifiable Disease, as Black Fungus cases have been found in at least 22 Indian states.

Several states, including Maharashtra, have reported a shortage of the drug Liposomal Amphotericin-B used to treat the drug, though last week Tope announced that the Black Fungus would also be treated free by the government as with Covid-19.

Maharashtra currently has notched a whopping 86,618 Covid fatalities and recorded 55,27,092 cases – just below France which has 55,81,351, ranking No. 4 in the world, besides 367,121 ‘active cases’ being treated on the date in the state.

Twitter to take 20% cut of your sales via Ticketed Spaces

0

After launching a Clubhouse rival called Spaces, Twitter is now out to make some money via ‘Ticketed Spaces’ and the micro-blogging platform will take a 20 percent cut of your sales, beginning with the users in the US.

Twitter said that the 20 percent cut will cover the cost of transaction fees of online payments processing company Stripes (hosts will also need a Stripe account), reports The Verge.

To begin with, the users in the US will be able to apply to host paid live audio rooms starting in the next couple of weeks.

“Anyone who wants to charge has to have 1,000 followers, have hosted three spaces in the past 30 days, and be at least 18 years old,” the report said on Friday.

The users will receive 80 percent of revenue after Apple and Google’s in-app purchase fees are taken.

“So if you sell a $10 ticket, Apple would presumably take a 30 percent cut, leaving you and Twitter to split the remaining $7. Eighty percent would go to you, and 20 percent would go to Twitter,” the report mentioned.

A limited group will be able to host Ticketed Spaces in the coming months. Hosts earn the majority of the revenue from ticket sales and Twitter will keep a small amount as well.

Hosts can set ticket prices and how many are available to sell.

Twitter has launched live audio conversation app Spaces available to users with 600 followers or more on both iOS and Android platforms.

WTC final against NZ will be India’s first at neutral venue

0

India’s World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand in Southampton will be their first Test at a neutral venue in their 89-year history of Test cricket.

Among nations with Test status, India and Bangladesh are the only sides who haven’t played Test cricket at a neutral venue.

Over the last decade, most international cricket teams have played series against Pakistan at a neutral venue since there was no cricket in Pakistan. The series was mostly in the United Arab Emirates, with almost no crowd for either side as Test matches found few takers in the Emirates.

No country has visited Pakistan for 10 years since early 2009 when the Sri Lankan cricket team was attacked by gunmen.

Since India has not played a Test match against Pakistan after the 2007-08 home series, they have not got to play any match at a neutral venue.

India had an opportunity to play at a neutral venue, back in 1999-00 during the Asian Test Championships. The final was played in Dhaka but India failed to reach it and Pakistan and Sri Lanka were involved in a title clash in Dhaka.

The WTC final at Southampton though will most likely be played in front of a crowd of 4,000 and there could be plenty of Indian fans though not as many as India are used to at home or even overseas nowadays.

Rod Bransgrove, the chairman of the Hampshire Country Cricket Club has been quoted as saying by section of the media that out of the 4,000 tickets, 50% will go to ICC for its sponsors and stakeholders while they will be selling the remaining 2,000 tickets.

“We have already received more than double applications from the fans. It is a high-interest game and there is a good demand for it,” he had told Cricbuzz.
