Indian expats in UAE warned against vax rumours for parents on visit visa

The Indian Consulate in Dubai has warned Indian expatriates against a WhatsApp message that is being circulated saying that the mission is seeking applications from those who want to have their parents in UAE on visit visas vaccinated against Covid.

The mission’s advisory came after Gulf News contacted it to verify the message that had gone viral.

The message, which had a link to the consulate’s online helpline service attached to it, read: “Ladies and gentlemen, this link is for the Consulate General of India Dubai. We spoke to them a couple of days ago about trying to arrange vaccine for our parents who are on visit visa.

When we spoke to them they said if we have enough number of people requesting us, then we can approach the government for arranging vaccination for seniors who are here on visit visa. So please send your messages in … and type out the details and maybe our parents will have a shot or two! (sic).”

A spokesperson of the consulate dismissed the message as a rumour and urged expatriates not to believe in such communication.

“We have no such information from local authorities here and currently, only UAE residents holding valid Emirates ID are eligible for vaccination. People should not believe in such information and avoid forwarding such stories to others,” the official cautioned.

Dubai resident Rihanna J. said she got the message forwarded in a WhatsApp group.

“I passed it on to my husband because we have been trying to get my father-in-law vaccinated. He had come over on a visit visa and we didn’t send him back because of the surge in Covid cases back in India.”

Some other residents, whose elderly parents are in the UAE on visit visas, also said that they had been desperately waiting to get their parents vaccinated.

Roshni Roy, whose parents have been in Dubai on visit visas, said: “I have not been able to sponsor a residence visa for them [her parents] due to the salary requirement of Dh20,000. I am eagerly waiting for the authorities to open vaccination for elderly visit visa holders.”

Govt directs WhatsApp to roll back new privacy policy, warns of action

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has again directed WhatApp to withdraw its much controversial revised privacy policy and has warned action against the platform.
According to official sources, in its notice to the company, the ministry has said that there are various options available for the messaging platform under Indian law.

The government has told WhatsApp to respond to its concerns by May 25.

Noting that many Indian users depend on WhatsApp for communicating on a daily basis, the ministry said that it is irresponsible for WhatsApp to leverage its position in the Indian market to impose unfair terms and conditions.

As per the ministry, the changes to WhatsApp privacy policy and the manner of introducing the changes undermines the sacrosanct values of informational privacy, data security and user choice and harms the rights and interests of Indian citizens.

The communication also notes how WhatsApps its new privacy policy is a violation of several provisions of the existing Indian laws and rules.

The ministry has also strongly taken up the issue of WhatsApp’s ‘discriminatory treatment’ to Indian users in comparison to the users in Europe.

WhatsApp’s decision to share data with its parent company, Facebook as per its revised privacy policy drew a lot of flak from the public and the government.

It had deferred its new privacy policy beyond May 15, 2021.

The matter is sub-judice as the ministry approached the Delhi High Court over the same.

Karnataka also announced plans to hire 2,150 doctors in the next three days to ramp-up its Covid treatment facilities across the state.

“We have set aside over Rs 30 crore for this purpose,” he said.

Facebook expands Covid-19 announcement tool to India

0

Social media giant Facebook on Wednesday expanded its Covid-19 Announcement — a tool for the health departments of states and union territories to share essential Coronavirus-related updates — in India.

The tool was first launched in the US. In India, the social media platform partnered with 33 states and union territories to roll this out in their respective jurisdictions. It will give health departments the ability to push out timely, credible Covid-19 and vaccine information to people in their local communities or state jurisdictions. States will also be able to issue these alerts statewide or to specific cities within their state.

“This is part of our ongoing efforts to support the public health authorities work to keep people safe and informed during the coronavirus public health crisis,” the company said in a statement.

“When posts by state health department pages on Facebook are marked as Covid-19 Announcements, we amplify their reach so that people located in the community are more likely to see them.

“We will send notifications to people located in the affected area, and will also show that information on the Covid-19 Information Center. This will help distribute important and urgent updates related to Covid-19 or Covid-19 vaccination efforts to people in the community,” Facebook said.

The tool can be used to communicate information on existing Covid resources, such as helplines; updates on hospital bed availability in districts, such as Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds and oxygen supported beds; changes to existing Coronavirus disease-related rules and regulation that can impact communities and day-to-day actions, such as lockdowns, night curfews and changes to treatment protocols.

It will also make people aware of vaccine eligibility and registration, the logistics of acquiring a vaccine and provide accurate information on Covid appropriate behavior and preventive behavioral health measures to stop the spread of the infectious disease.

Siraj has gone from strength to strength since Aus tour: Gavaskar

0

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said that fast bowler Mohammed Siraj has got better since the tour of Australia earlier this year. Gavaskar noted Siraj’s performances for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL).

“Mohammed Siraj has gone from strength to strength after the tour of Australia and he was relentlessly at the batsmen even in the final over just as how he was at the first over of the innings,” Gavaskar wrote in a column for SportStar.

Siraj took six wickets in the tournament which was postponed halfway through the league stage due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Earlier in the year, he played an integral role in India beating Australia 2-1 Down Under in the absence of a number of key players.

Gavaskar also said that Devdutt Padikkal showed this season that he can be the one for the future, rating his contribution for RCB in the same bracket as that of South African great AB de Villiers.

“The Bangalore team had a marvelous run thanks in the main to its batting dominated by the peerless AB de Villiers. Young Devdutt Padikkal got a terrific century and looks a great prospect for the future in all forms of the game,” wrote Gavaskar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at the Bhavnagar airport on Wednesday to take stock of the situation in the three worst-affected districts and the union territory of Diu in the wake of the devastation caused by the severe cyclonic storm Tauktae.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in his home state Gujarat at the Bhavnagar airport on Wednesday at around 12 noon. He was welcomed by Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Both the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister left to have a stock of the situation through the aerial route of the affected three districts of Bhavnagar, Amreli, Gir-Somnath, and also the union territory of Diu.

According to the information from sources, the Prime Minister after the survey will have a two-hour meeting with the Gujarat CM and other high officials of the state administration at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. Details regarding the damage assessment, restoration, and Relief work will be discussed in the meeting.

A special arrangement has been made at the airport for the meeting. The security has also been beefed up in view of the PM’s visit.

The Prime Minister will leave for Delhi in the evening.

Meanwhile, the administration has been ordered to carry out the restoration relief work in the affected regions of the state. The health officials have also been told to be ready to look at the possibility of water-borne diseases.

The cyclonic storm Tauktae on Tuesday passed through the Gir-Somnath, Amreli, Bhavnagar districts, with wind speed at around 150 km/hour after its landfall before midnight. Maximum damage was inflicted in these three districts, thereafter the intensity decreased gradually as it passed near Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

The storm has caused great damage in the state, especially to major crops like horticulture. Almost the entire harvest of mango, bananas, and coconut has been destroyed. Fallen trees have blocked internal as well as major roads, affecting the RAR works. A total of 176 Tehsil in 23 districts have received normal to heavy rains in 24 hours.

Oxygen On Wheels — an out of the box solution to fight Covid-19 takes off

0

Faced with the lack of oxygen supply and hospital beds due to the onslaught of the second surge of the Covid-19 pandemic, many public and private sector undertakings, and not-for-profit and non-governmental organizations have come forward to plug the gap.

In Kolkata since May 17, buses with oxygen concentrators have been parked outside major State hospitals. These play a vital role in serving as the units for the first line of treatment for the Coronavirus affected patients, experiencing respiratory problems, till such time as they get hospital beds.

Called Oxygen On Wheels, these six buses have been offered by the Jain International Trade Organisation (JITO). Inaugurated by the State’s Chief Secretary, Alapan Bandyopadhyay, these buses are equipped with four oxygen concentrators and have fans, mobile charging points, and most importantly redesigned seats to enable patients to be comfortable.

Waiting for admission in the hospital the patients are given oxygen by the hospital health technician while their entire admission is taken care of by the hospital staff. The power required to man the bus is also supplied by the hospital.

Referring to this initiative, Rajesh Bhutoria, Chairman of JITO Kolkata Chapter said: “We believe that this is the time for the entire community to come together as one and support the activities of the Government in any way possible. We are all in this fight against Covid-19 together. We look forward to undertaking many more initiatives to save precious lives.”

BMTC initiative

Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation too had swung into action as it provided relief to Covid-19 patients through Oxygen On Wheels bus last week outside the city’s Victoria Hospital.

BMTC tied up with different NGOs, including Foundation India, to provide free oxygen in a modified non-air conditioned bus. Equipped with two concentrators and four cylinders, six patients can be attended to at one time.

It is stationed from 10.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily with people getting admitted on a first-come-first-served basis by booking on 97310-97191.

While cautioning that these buses should not be viewed as an alternative to a hospital bed, many health experts feel that such a service is the need of the hour for patients in the initial period when there is difficulty in getting an oxygen bed.

To cater to areas near Bengaluru, BMTC also extended this facility to areas close to Bengaluru. These include Chikkamagaluru, Chikkaballapur, and Jigani. Following BMTC’s initiative, the Karnataka State Road Corporation launched two oxygen buses. Two more buses in Chitradurga and Chickballapur too are in planning.

In fact, the State road transport corporations are willing to provide more Oxygen On Wheels services in all districts. They need NGOs and private groups to sponsor oxygen concentrators and equipment required for providing oxygen inside buses.

This was stated by the Deputy Chief Minister and Transport Minister Laxman Savadi. He also mentioned in a release that each bus can provide oxygen for 610 patients who are waiting for a hospital bed. He had added that a Hyderabad-based NGO was keen to help and join hands with the road transport corporations.

School launches free oxygen buses

Contributing to their effort to fight the Coronavirus, the Greenwood High International School, in association with Maharaja Agrasen Hospital, has launched five buses that will provide free oxygen to people.

Placed outside city hospitals, each bus can accommodate 12 patients at a time.

In order to use the free facility, a patient has to provide a doctor’s prescription or RTPCR report and a copy of his or her Aadhaar card. It is the attendant of the patient who is expected to provide these details, said Dr. Satish Jain, President of Maharaja Agrasen Hospital to the Express-News Service.

While the school provided the bus and shared internal equipment costs too with the hospital such as gas cylinder, mask nasal cannula, etc, all the medical assistance will be provided by the hospital.

The initiative was inaugurated by the State Revenue Minister, R Ashoka.

Each patient will be able to use the oxygen for two hours and will also be given a free nasal cannula for the oxygen flow to be connected to the flow meter and regulator. Based on the success of this drive, 10 more buses are planned.

Those wishing to avail of the facility can call the hospital’s administration at 09620304864.

Tamil Nadu’s effort to help to wait for patients

Like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu is struggling with patients and their relatives trying to find beds. Many patients who reach hospitals, unable to get beds are seen gasping for air.

Before Kolkata, the Jain International Trade Organization had stepped in Chennai to introduce Oxygen on Wheels.

With many school buses not being used at present, were modified to accommodate six patients each and were equipped with six oxygen concentrators and cylinders to house patients waiting outside hospitals.

Four busses had been rolled out initially with plans for increasing the strength to 20 later. Based on the success of their initiative JITO wants to expand across Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, CII-Young Indians teamed up with Sakthi Nursing Home, Shiv Niketan School, and Tiruppur Riders Club, to launch Oxygen Bus for Covid-19 patients free of cost Tiruppur.

Talking about their initiative, CII-Young Indians (Covid Wing) Coordinator said: “When we heard about the scarcity of oxygen cylinders for Covid-19 patients, we decided to resolve the situation. With the support of other members from Tiruppur Riders Club, the entire vehicle was renovated to suit the purpose and we were able to create 5 seats for Covid patients. The entire cost will be borne by these organizations.”

More buses are planned and they will be stationed in front of the medical facilities offering Covid care to provide relief to patients waiting for the beds. One nurse and two volunteers with the bus driver will be present on the bus.

Andhra Pradesh ambulances

On the campus of the District Government Hospital (DGH) in Rajamahendravaram city in East Godavari district, two Oxygen On Wheels ambulances has been stationed to accommodate patients in need of critical care treatment for Covid-19.

With the modification of these two 35-seater Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) vehicles, an additional bedding facility on the DGH campus has been created. These ambulances are monitored by the DGH staff.

Talking about this enterprise with The Hindu, the Rajamahendravaram Member of Parliament, Margin Bharat said “The additional temporary critical care facility has been minimizing the duration of long wait of COVID-19 patients for admission to the DGH. The ambulances have come to the rescue of many lives in the city. We are able to ensure a life-saving treatment in the Oxygen on Wheels’ ambulances and each is designed to accommodate at least six patients at a stretch. The patients will be shifted to the hospital once beds are vacant.”

The MP added that the model will be shared with the State Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy after a few days in order to replicate the model in the rest of the State. In the coming days, local NGOs would be roped into its operation.

While these efforts are important it must be realized that these do not guarantee treatment. According to Foundation India Secretary, Sanjay Gupta, the service is just timely help till the patients find an oxygen bed. Agreeing with him, Dr. Vishal Rao, member of, an expert committee of, Covid Task Force, Government of India, remarked: “This is a good make-shift solution till the patient gets a bed. But such services should tie-up with hospitals, or the government should facilitate this.”
