In what could possibly be the first instance of its kind, the India men and women’s cricket teams are likely to travel together to England on a charter flight on June 2 for their respective series.

The two teams are likely to assemble in Mumbai on May 19 for a two-week quarantine although there were talks and speculation on Monday that cyclone on the west coast may delay their arrival.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had been mulling May 19 and May 24 as dates for assembling cricketers in Mumbai before departure.

While the Indian men’s team will play six Test matches — the World Test Championship final against New Zealand from June 18 and five Tests against England from August 4 –, the women’s team will play a one-off Test in mid-June, three ODIs and three T20Is.

According to a report in ESPNCricinfo.com, ‘the 20 players in the men’s Test squad, excluding those residing in Mumbai, will start their quarantine at the team hotel from Wednesday’.

It added that the ‘rest of the squad and members of team management residing in Mumbai, including captain Virat Kohli, his deputy Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma and head coach Ravi Shastri, will enter the bio-secure bubble at the Mumbai team hotel from May 24’.

The teams will undergo a 10-day quarantine upon arrival in England.

Love the shot of Dhoni’s 2011 WC winning six: Buttler

0

England wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler said he is fascinated by MS Dhoni’s calmness and brilliance. Buttler said he loves the famous shot of Dhoni twirling his bat around after hitting the winning six in the final of the 2011 World Cup and that there was hardly any other celebration from him despite the enormity of the occasion.

“I love the shot of him hitting that six to win the World Cup and then he twizzles his bat around. That was all he gave you, it is probably the biggest moment in Indian cricket history and he still just pulls it off with such composure. I love watching him play,” Buttler said on Cricbuzz.

“I like that about him, made me intrigued about him. It is quite amazing trying to think what he is thinking about, why is he not riding the emotions of the game. He always kept people guessing like that. I like the way he does things because they make sense to him. It doesn’t look like he worries too much about what it looks like,” said Buttler.

Buttler also noted Dhoni’s quickness behind the stumps despite the unconventional positions he gets himself into.

“As a wicketkeeper, those lightning-fast hands and reactions he has. Some of the positions he is in sometimes, technical coaches may say that is not quite right. The way his hands are almost moving back towards the stumps before he has caught the ball, it is quite amazing,” he said.

Epic Games sues AR glasses maker Nreal over its name

Fortnite developer Epic Games has filed a lawsuit against mixed-reality glasses company Neal over an alleged trademark infringement

The lawsuit claims the company’s name “looks and sounds virtually identical” to Unreal and said that was “no coincidence”, Engadget reported on Monday.

Epic also said in the suit that the two companies are competing in the same market and suggested the similarity could cause confusion, the report said.

“Epic has 10 registrations for ‘Unreal’ alone or in connection with another term for a wide range of goods and services including but not limited to software, video games, virtual worlds and 3D visualisations, animations, and platforms,” according to the suit.

Nreal released its Nreal Light mixed-reality glasses in South Korea last year and it plans to launch them in the US this quarter, as The Verge notes.

Although Epic doesn’t yet have AR hardware of its own, it has shown interest in the AR/VR space.

In 2017, Epic released Robo Recall, a virtual reality game developed with Unreal Engine.

Epic’s Unreal Engine is a ubiquitous game-making tool that’s also used for films and general-purpose 3D design.

The company is seeking an injunction that would force Nreal to withdraw its trademark application, as well as unspecified damages, the report said.

The companies have been battling over the Unreal moniker for a few years. They had been in discussions over a settlement but weren’t able to reach an agreement, according to the suit.

Samsung tops India tablet market in Q1 with 34% share

0

Samsung has dominated the tablet market in India with a 34 percent volume market share, regaining the top position in the segment, a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC) showed on Tuesday.

Lenovo with 30 percent and Apple with 16 percent were the second and third biggest brands in the tablet business in India.

Samsung’s popular lineup of tablets in India includes Tab S6 Lite, Tab A7, Tab S7+, and Tab S7.

“Samsung registered a strong 15 percent year-on-year growth in Q1 2021 to regain the number 1 spot in India,” the IDC said.

In the B2C segment, Samsung secured a 43 percent volume market share in the first quarter due to its strong performance in mass (less than $150) and high ($300-$600) segments in the country.

While much of the world is still dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, sales of tablets and Chromebooks remain on fire.

Globally, tablets had an outstanding first quarter of 2021 with 55.2 percent (year-over-year) growth and shipments totaling 39.9 million units, according to preliminary data from IDC that was released last month.

Schools had shown a strong preference for the tablet form factor due to its low cost and easy manageability.

Globally, Samsung was at the second position with a 20 percent market share in the tablet segment in Q1.

67% Indians prefer US for higher education: Report

About 67 percent of Indians prefer the US for higher education, reveals a new report by fin-tech platform Prodigy Finance.

The report on the State of Higher Education in Study Abroad Market showed that besides the US, Indian students prefer the UK and France at 8 percent each for pursuing their master’s degree abroad.

Most students who went abroad for higher education were from Maharashtra (20 percent), Karnataka (15 percent), Delhi (12 percent), and Telangana (8 percent).

Almost 70 percent who traveled abroad for higher education last year were male and 30 percent were female, the report showed.

The study further found that for engineering courses, Northeastern University, the University of Texas at Arlington, and Stevens Institute of Technology were the most preferred universities, whereas for MBA programs Georgetown University, University of Toronto, and the University of Rochester have been most popular.

There has been severe uncertainty among the students traveling abroad for higher education as most of the families went through a financial crisis amid a nationwide lockdown last year.

Regardless, there was a growth of 41 percent in applications in 2020 when compared to 2019.

This is quite significant if compared with the 55 percent loan disbursements in 2019 after the 108 percent growth witnessed during 2018.

In 2020, Prodigy Finance disbursed approximately Rs 30 lakh to each student in terms of loans for higher education.

“The year 2020 posed several challenges for students, parents, and educational institutions around the globe. It even forced the financial markets to condense, which in turn limited the amount of capital we could supply promptly to students last year.

“As international borders start to reopen gradually in 2021 and campus learning looks promising in the next quarter looking at the vaccination drive, we can expect a 30-35 percent growth in 2021 as compared to 2020,” said Mayank Sharma, Country Head India, Prodigy Finance, in a statement on Tuesday.

Prodigy Finance has also recently partnered with six international colleges, offering a global portfolio of 800 colleges and 1000 post-graduate courses to Indian students.

The company has, so far, financially assisted 20,000 students across the globe, it now aims to disburse loans worth more than $1 billion to over 20,000 deserving Indian students in the next three years.

Google Phone app can now announce who’s calling

If you have an Android device with the Google Phone app on, you will now be able to hear who is calling when the phone rings.

According to 9to5Google, the company is rolling out a new feature for its Phone app that will announce the name and number of any incoming calls — a move to help users screen unwanted calls.

Currently, the Pixel phone owners in the US have received the automatic Call Screen feature, and other countries will get the new tool soon.

You can set whether you want the app to announce caller ID every time the phone rings, or when an earphone on.

To enable the new feature, open Google Phone, go to Settings and then Caller ID announcement.

The “Announce caller ID” is disabled by default but you can choose between “Always,” “Only when using a headset,” or “Never.”

iOS devices already have the caller ID feature enabled.

Caller ID announcements are a great accessibility feature, allowing people with visual impairments to more easily know who is calling them.
