New vaccine blocks Covid-19, variants, other Coronaviruses

0

US researchers have developed a potential new vaccine, which has proven effective against the original SARS-CoV-1, SARS-CoV-2 as well as its UK, South Africa, and Brazil variants and related bat Coronaviruses that could potentially cause the next pandemic.

The new vaccine, called the pan-coronavirus vaccine, was found effective in protecting monkeys and mice.

The pan-coronavirus vaccine triggers neutralizing antibodies via a nanoparticle. The nanoparticle is composed of the Coronavirus part that allows it to bind to the body’s cell receptors and is formulated with a chemical booster called an adjuvant. Success in primates is highly relevant to humans, said researchers from the Duke University in North Carolina, US.

The findings, published in the journal Nature, showed that the nanoparticle vaccine, in monkeys, blocked Covid-19 infection by 100 percent. The new vaccine also elicited significantly higher neutralizing levels in the animals than current vaccine platforms or natural infection in humans.

“We began this work last spring with the understanding that, like all viruses, mutations would occur in the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes Covid-19,” said senior author Barton F Haynes, director of the Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVI).

“The mRNA vaccines were already under development, so we were looking for ways to sustain their efficacy once those variants appeared.

“This approach not only provided protection against SARS-CoV-2, but the antibodies induced by the vaccine also neutralized variants of concern that originated in the UK, South Africa, and Brazil. And the induced antibodies reacted with quite a large panel of coronaviruses,” Haynes said.

The team built on earlier studies involving SARS, the respiratory illness caused by a coronavirus called SARS-CoV-1. They found a person who had been infected with SARS developed antibodies capable of neutralizing multiple coronaviruses, suggesting that a pan-coronavirus might be possible.

They identified one particular receptor-binding domain site that is present on SARS-CoV-2, its circulating variants, and SARS-related bat viruses that make them highly vulnerable to cross-neutralizing antibodies.

The team then designed a nanoparticle displaying this vulnerable spot. The nanoparticle is combined with a small molecule adjuvant, which boosts the body’s immune response to fight the disease.

Felt safe in IPL bubble but travel was going to be challenge: Pamment

0

Players and staff felt safe in the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) bio-bubble but traveling was always going to be a challenge, said Mumbai Indians fielding coach James Pamment.

Pamment was one of several players, coaches, and officials from New Zealand who arrived back in the country on Saturday after the postponement of the 2021 IPL.

“We’d pretty much taken over a hotel in Mumbai and created a safe space – I think I was the first person in there. You felt as long as everyone was disciplined and people weren’t tempted… staff were also part of the bubble, they had to isolate for a two-week period before working and we were getting regular tests, so you felt it was an extremely safe bubble being formed. You did feel confident you’d be fine, and everybody around you would be fine,” he is quoted as saying by stuff.co.NZ.

Pamment said that it was when a support staff member in the team tested positive after they went to Chennai that they realized that the bubble was not impenetrable.

“We felt the travel was always going to be a challenge. We had a case ourselves on our first travel when we went to Chennai to prepare for the start of the tournament – it was a support staff member, fortunately, picked up very quickly and he was isolated, and none of the people considered close contacts to him were infected. But it was a very early reminder that your bubble’s not impenetrable. We probably got even stricter around how we operated,” he said.

Payment arrived in New Zealand on Saturday night along with Trent Boult, Finn Allen, James Neesham, Adam Milne, Scott Kuggeleijn, Shane Bond, and Mike Hesson, while a second flight landed on Sunday in Auckland carrying Brendon McCullum, Stephen Fleming, Kyle Mills, Lockie Ferguson, Simon Doull, Scott Styris, and Chris Gaffaney.

J&J vax set for widespread use in Germany

0

Germany on Monday said it would administer the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine primarily to those aged 60 and above, but decided it could also be offered to younger people as long as their individual health risks had been considered.

The vaccine will therefore be given the same status as the AstraZeneca jab, which was last week cleared to be given to people younger than 60, as long as they had had a consultation with a doctor, reports the DPA news agency.

Unlike the AstraZeneca vaccine, however, Johnson & Johnson requires only one dose, rather than two.

The roll-out of the Johnson & Johnson jab had been delayed in Germany and other countries in Europe due to concerns that, in highly rare circumstances, they can contribute to the formation of internal blood clots.

The decision to lift the age restriction was taken at a meeting of state and federal health ministers and announced by Health Minister Jens Spahn on Monday, following a recommendation from Germany’s top vaccine body.

The Ministers said that they took the cases of cervical vein thromboses in connection with the Johnson and Johnson vaccine very seriously, but pointed out that, as with the AstraZeneca vaccine, such cases were very rare.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) infectious disease authority Monday reported 6,922 infections during the past 24 hours.

The country’s overall case tally and death rate currently stood at 3,530,887 and 84,796 deaths.

Pakistan completed the formalities on Monday, crushing Zimbabwe by an innings and 147 runs on Day 4, and made a clean sweep of the two-Test series at the Harare Sports Club here.

Zimbabwe was bundled out for 231 in their second innings, after adding only 11 runs to the overnight score of 220 for nine wickets.

Pakistan had defeated the hosts by an innings and 116 runs in the first Test.

This is Pakistan’s second series clean sweep on the trot, having defeated South Africa in a two-Test series at home this year.

Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Afridi snared the last wicket — Luke Jongwa (37) — on the last ball of the fifth over of the day.

Afridi recorded his career’s second five-wicket haul (5 for 52), which is also his best figure in a Test inning.

This was also the seventh instance of two Pakistan bowlers sharing 10 wickets equally in an innings.

Pakistan opener Abid Ali was named Player of the Match for his unbeaten 215, which propelled the visitors to a massive 510 for eight declared. The right-handed batsman’s score is the best by a Pakistani player in Harare.

Pace bowler Hasan Ali, who has enjoyed a great comeback to international cricket since January, was named Player of the Series. He took 14 wickets in the two Tests at a stunning average of 8.92.

Brief scores: Pakistan 510 for 8 deal in 147.1 overs beat Zimbabwe 132 in 60.4 overs & 231 in 68 overs (Regis Chakabva 80, Brendan Taylor 49, Luke Jongwe 37; Nauman Ali 5-86, Shaheen Afridi 5-52) by 147 runs

Player of the match: Abid Ali
Player of the series: Hasan Ali

Sonakshi Sinha gets the jab, shares photo

Actress Sonakshi Sinha on Monday took the vaccine for Covid-19 prevention. The actress shared a photograph on Instagram where she is seen getting the jab on her left arm.

“#Vaccine many #Victory!!!” Sonakshi captioned the photo, encouraging fans and followers to get vaccinated.

The actress’s post comes at a time when India is battling a deadly second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the number of positive cases is rising every day.

As per data revealed by the Union Health Ministry on Monday, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh are among the top 10 states that accounted for 73.91 percent of new Covid-19 cases registered in the last 24 hours.

The data further shows that ten states account for 72.86 percent of the new deaths, and Maharashtra saw the maximum casualties (572). Karnataka follows with 490 daily deaths.

Mamata’s 43 ministers take oath sans festivities

Amid a raging Covid-19 pandemic, 43 Trinamool Congress ministers comprising 24 cabinet ministers, 10 Ministers of State with Independent Charge, and nine MoS took oath at an austere ceremony held in the Raj Bhawan on Monday.

While three ministers Amit Mitra, Bratya Basu, and Rathin Ghosh took their oath virtually. The rest — 40 ministers were divided into three groups — Cabinet, MOS (Independent Charge), and MoS and they took their oath together to cut short the program.

Mitra has not been well for a long time and the other two ministers have Covid.

Later Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee allocated the departments to the ministers.

Banerjee kept with herself important departments like Home and Hill Affairs, Health and Family Welfare, Information and Cultural Affairs, Land and Land Reforms, and Refugee Rehabilitation.

The chief minister will also take care of North Bengal.

As expected, Amit Mitra was given the responsibility of Finance but his other department Commerce and Industries was given to former Education Minister Partha Chatterjee. Chatterjee will also hold the portfolio of IT and Parliamentary Affairs.

On the other hand, Bratya Basu who was handling IT is now given the responsibility of the School and Higher Education Department. Mitra is physically not well and didn’t contest the election but he was brought back by the chief minister so that he could continue to handle finance.

Though most of the former ministers retain their department former Urban Development minister and former Mayor Firhad Hakim will be holding the portfolio of Transport and Housing. Earlier the state Transport Department was with Suvendu Adhikari who left TMC and joined BJP before the election.

Adhikari who won from Nandigram defeating the chief minister in a closely fought battle will be the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly.

Interestingly enough three most powerful ministers in the last cabinet Arrop Biswas, Jyotipriya Mullivk, and Sovondeb Chattopadhyay have been given relatively insignificant portfolios.

Mullick, who was in charge of the Food Department last time, has been given the responsibility of Forest and non-conventional energy.

The Food and Supply department has been given to Pulok Roy, who is new in the ministry.

Similarly, Mamata’s close aide and loyal for long time Sovondeb Chattopadhyay has been transferred from Power to Agriculture and Aroop Biswas, who is one of the most trusted of the chief minister has been given the portfolio of Power. Biswas was the PWD minister that has not been allotted yet.

Apart from Roy, the new faces in the cabinet include Manas Ranjan Bhuniya and Bamkim Chandra Hazra. When Bhuniya has been given the responsibility of Water Resource Investigation and Development, Hazra has been given the responsibility of Sunderban Affairs.

Chandrima Bhattacharya — one of the most trusted the chief minister has been made MoS with independent charge but she has been given the responsibility of several departments like Urban Development and Municipal Affairs and will be working as MoS in several departments that are held by Mamata Banerjee like Health and Family Welfare, Land and Land Reforms and Refugee Rehabilitation. It is likely that she will become one of the key ministers in this ministry.

There are some new faces who will be working as ministers of state with independent charge and that includes a former IPS officer who has been asked to handle the Technical Education Department.

Ratna De Nag will be handling Environment, Science, and Technology, Sandhyarani Tudu has been allotted the Western Region Development department and Akhil Giri has been given the department of fisheries.

‘Milestone’: Nuanced cinema

‘Milestone’ (also known as ‘Meel Patthar’); Cast: Suvinder Vicky, Lakshvir Saran; Direction: Ivan Ayr; Rating: * * * and 1/2 (three and a half stars)

BY VINAYAK CHAKRAVORTY

Ivan Ayr’s second feature film opens to nothingness. A black screen stares at you for nearly 30 seconds, almost preparing you for the immersive experience ahead. It is as if Ayr lets you absorb a bit of the bleakness that would seem to define his protagonist Ghalib’s life over the next 98-odd minutes.

Ghalib is a truck driver, portrayed with understated angst by Punjabi actor Suvinder Vicky (he was Joginder in “Chauthi Koot”, for ready reference, among other impressive roles). As the narrative opens, Ghalib is asked to load goods in his vehicle by the depot supervisor. He tries telling me he has a bad back but doesn’t argue about being ignored.

It is a trait we spot in Ghalib repeatedly, as the plot unfolds. He takes a lot of pasting without arguing — yet that’s only when it comes to himself. For, Ghalib instinctively tends to fight for friends and co-workers, too. In his introverted way, he is ready to stand up for a colleague who gets attacked by the laborers’ union or an aging driver who is sacked by the owners because he can no longer see clearly at night.

The storyline (Ayr and Neel Mani Kant) takes time to develop Ghalib as a character and to let the audience understand the character’s mind. This is important because Ghalib rarely speaks or expresses, and one way this is achieved is by letting Angello Faccini’s camera stay with Ghalib in almost every frame of the film (indeed, you would be hard-pressed to recall a single scene in this film without Ghalib). It is a style reminiscent of Ayr’s treatment in his debut feature film, “Soni”, where he used the cinematic idiom to let us fathom how his protagonist, the lady cop Soni (memorably essayed by Geetika Vidya Ohlyan), is given to bursts of rage while struggling to cope with a sense of emptiness in her life.

In “Milestone” (also known as “Meel Patthar”), Ghalib doesn’t give in to rage. Rather, he seems withdrawn in a shell even when he is in a crowd. It is a shell that Pash (Lakshvir Saran), a new young recruit at the transport company, tries to crack. Pash is almost star-struck by Ghalib, but the latter has no doubt that the youngster has been assigned as his helper because the owners plan to eventually replace him someday. The situation is a silent comment on how the employer is increasingly becoming an expendable asset, no matter the dedication showed.

For Ghalib, his struggle to survive life’s ruthless vagaries is compounded by the fact that he mostly always tries to keep everyone happy by doing the right thing. It is apparent in the way he gives in without much of a debate when he is directed by the ‘mukhia’ of his ‘and to “compensate” his in-laws for the death of his wife. The loss of his wife is the plot point that singularly drives the melancholy about Ghalib’s existence, which we will gradually realize as the screenplay moves.

Interestingly, Ayr never shows the two women who dominate Ghalib’mind space. We hear a lot about his late wife Etali, a Sikkimese woman for whom he sacrificed his preferred village life to move into a minuscule big-city flat, but the writer-director avoids using any flashback device to actually show us the character. Rather, he lets us form an impression of Etali from conversations around her. The second woman is Pash’s sister, who supports her young sibling. We hear her voice over the phone but never see her on-screen. Pash’s request to Ghalib that he marry his sister has an interesting outcome — it is met with the only spot of aggression we will get to see about Ghalib in the entire film. Yet Ghalib’s story, despite its dreary essence, leaves us on a note of hope and warmth, as he accidentally happens to converse with Pash’s sister over the phone.

“Milestone” is nuanced cinema. The film demands an amount of participation on the part of the viewer, as layered storytelling draws you into Ghalib’s intricate world of silences. It is your film if you cherish the aesthetics of the moving pictures.

Samsung Galaxy M51 a winner on new DXOMARK battery score

0

The French hi-tech company DXOMARK has announced a new score for smartphone battery experience that covers a wide range of common real-life uses smartphones including social media, communication, and multimedia applications.

The Samsung Galaxy M51 emerged as the top-ranked device for its overall performance. Lasting 80 hours in average usage, the Wiko U30 is on the top of the autonomy rankings.

“The Find X3 range by OPPO finds top places in the ranking table for charging, enabling users to charge ultra-fast from 0-80 percent. Apple’s iPhone 12 Pro Max finds itself way ahead of the competition in terms of efficiency,” the company announced in a statement.

DXOMARK is known for the tests and scores of the camera, audio, and display quality of consumer electronics.

In the first set of new DXOMARK battery scores, 17 phones from all price segments were tested.

“While battery performance is critical for consumers, they have negligible information pre-purchase to understand which device will best suit their needs. Specs like mAh and W do not indicate true battery performance,” said Olivier Simon, Battery Evaluation Director.

Battery performance depends on a combination of factors including the choice of hardware components and power management software optimization.

“Using our score centered on the end-user, we aim to guide consumers in their purchasing decisions,” Simon said in a statement.

The proprietary battery test protocol covers 70 measurements, 6.5 days of testing behind each DXOMARK Battery score and evaluates the entire battery experience, and quantifies 3 main areas: autonomy, charging, and efficiency.

The test protocol contains lab measurements performed in indoor stationary settings complemented with tests in mobility.

Over a year ago, DXOMARK set up a dedicated team of battery experts for the development of its battery evaluation system.

The company said it has invested in state-of-the-art equipment such as a set of touch robots that simulate human usage like gaming and browsing social media apps.
