SL detects 6 Covid variants amid surging cases

Sri Lankan health experts have said a total of six Covid-19 variants have been identified in the island nation amid an ongoing resurgence of new cases.

The coronavirus variants, including the more contagious B.1.617 first reported in India, were identified by the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, reports Xinhua news agency.

A letter signed by the Department’s Professor Neelika Malavige and Director Chandima Jeewandara on Sunday said the six variants were found in samples from patients sent to them as of April 30.

The health experts said the variant of B.1.617 was detected in a person who recently returned from India and was in a quarantine center in Colombo.

Jeewandara was quoted by the Sunday Morning newspaper as saying that his Department has also detected 65 cases with the virus variant B.1.1.7 first found in Britain as well as one infection with the B.1.351 strain that originated in South Africa.

Sri Lanka has so far reported 125,906 confirmed cases of Covid-19 with 801 deaths.

Dos and Dont’s in home isolation – the AIIMS guidelines

The AIIMS has given guidelines on Covid management in home isolation at a recent training session for 14 experts from tertiary care centres across the country.

In his presentation, Assistant Professor of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Saurabh Mittal, highlighted how home isolation helps free hospital space and contain spread of disease.

It was noted that only patients having mild disease, in which there are only upper respiratory tract symptoms and no shortness of breath, are recommended for home isolation, but the decision about whether it is mild will be taken by a doctor.

The availability of requisite facility with attached separate bathroom at the residence is necessary for self-isolation.

However, immunocompromised patients like HIV+ people are not recommended for home isolation and can be allowed it only after proper evaluation by a doctor, while elderly patients with comorbidities shall only so allowed after proper evaluation by the treating doctor, and should have a caregiver on 24X 7 basis, it was stressed.

The caregiver should have link with a hospital for entire duration of home isolation, and the treating physician should be kept updated regarding worsening symptoms. Patients should continue medications for comorbid conditions, and should be hydrated and well rested. Antipyretics should be consumed as per doctor’s prescription.

Mittal said that monitoring of symptoms is the most important segment in home isolation. Patients should make use of pulse oximeter and should promptly report any deterioration of symptoms.

It was also noted that patients must stay in an identified room with attached bathroom which should have cross ventilation. They should stay away from other family members, especially the elderly, and should not share personal items with other members.

Patients should use triple-layer medical mask all the time which should be discarded after 8 hours of use. It should be disinfected with sodium hypochlorite before discarding.

Caregivers should also wear triple-layer mask within the house, and ensure hand hygiene before and after wearing mask and also after contact with patient and his/her immediate surroundings.

Regularly touched surfaces like table-tops, and door knobs should be cleaned with 1 per cent hypochlorite solution or phenyl. Alcohol-based sanitisers are not recommended for disinfecting surfaces.

Potentially contaminated items in immediate environment of the patient should be avoided. Food must be provided to the patient in his/her room, and the utensils and dishes used cleaned with soap and detergent.

Patients should follow the instructions regarding physical distancing, mask use, handwashing, self-monitoring, and constant contact with healthcare provider.

For symptomatic management, a patient may perform warm saline gargles twice a day, and steam inhalation for a few minutes may also be done. Patient can also consume vitamin C and zinc tablets.

The decision to administer Remdesivir should be taken only by a medical professional, and patient should not attempt to procure or administer it at home. Oral steroids should not be taken in mild disease, and only a doctor can take decision about a low dose of oral steroids if symptoms persist beyond seven days.

Patients should seek help of a hospital if they develop difficulty in breathing or oxygen saturation goes below 94 per cent, and also, if they feel persistent pain in the chest or mental confusion or inability to rise.

For patients who are borderline hypoxic, proning is recommended to increase oxygen saturation by two to three points to avoid panic order stress.

Patients under home isolation can end it after 10 days of symptoms’ onset or if there is no fever for three days. There is no need for testing after the home isolation period is over.

Telangana CM discusses Covid measures with Harsh Vardhan

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Sunday spoke to Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and briefed him about the measures being taken by the state government to curb the pandemic.

According to a statement issued by the state government, Rao also offered suggestions to the Union Minister on certain measures to be taken to contain the Covid spread.

The CM also said that the fast spreaders of the virus should be identified and be administered the vaccine dose on priority.

He also told Vardhan that vaccine guidelines should be relaxed so that the cab drivers, autorickshaw drivers, conductors, boys supplying the LPG gas cylinders, and those workers who go to several places to do their daily jobs should be brought under a special category and be vaccinated.

The Centre should extend this facility to the states to help curtail the major spread of the virus.

The statement said that the Union Minister has responded positively to the CM’s suggestions and assured to discuss the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to the state government’s statement, after the review meeting, Modi spoke to the Chief Minister over phone.

The Prime Minister said that Vardhan had briefed him about the suggestions made by the Telangana Chief Minister.

“Your suggestions are good and we will implement them. I thank you for the good suggestions,” the statement issued by the state government quoted the Prime Minister as telling Rao.

The CM has also urged the Prime Minister to supply more oxygen and Remdesivir injections to the state.

Modi positively responded to the CM’s request and also assured that immediate action would be taken on the requests, the statement said.

India could tour Sri Lanka for limited-over series in July

0

India could play a three-match ODI and five-match T20I series against Sri Lanka in July, the Indian cricket board president, Sourav Ganguly, has said.

Going by the ICC’s Future Tours Programme (FTP), India are scheduled to play three T20 matches in Sri Lanka this July. India were also due to play three T20Is and an equal number of ODIs last June in the island nation, but that tour was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic.

As a 20-member Indian squad is set to leave for England in early June to play the World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand and the five-Test series against England, starting on August 4, it’s unlikely that India would be able to send their best team to Sri Lanka.

In all likelihood, it could be a completely different squad, without several first-choice cricketers, if the tour takes place in July at all.

Sri Lanka, too, will be playing three ODIs and three T20Is in England between June 23 and July 4, and given the Covid quarantine norms, it would be interesting to see how and when the series with India takes place.

In an interview with Sportstar, when Ganguly was asked if there was a possibility of the remainder of the postponed IPL season being completed in England on either side of India’s Test series there, he said: “No”.

“India is supposed to go to Sri Lanka for three ODIs and five T20Is. There are lots of organisational hazards like 14-day quarantine. It [the IPL] can’t happen in India [either]. This quarantine is tough to handle; too early to say how we can find a slot to complete the IPL.”

Ahead of the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in India in October-November, and after the conclusion of the England Test series on September 14, India will have a small window in their schedule — sometime in mid-October. But given the pandemic situation, there is a possibility that the remainder of the IPL will be shifted.

Sri Lanka and the UAE will then become an option for hosting the remaining IPL matches.

UEFA agrees to reintegrate nine ‘Super League’ clubs

The European football governing body (UEFA) has begun the process of reintegration of nine of the 12 clubs which were involved in the now defunct ‘Super League’ project.

UEFA convened an emergency meeting of its executive committee late on Friday which took into consideration the spirit and the content of the Club Commitment Declaration and decided to approve various actions, measures and commitments made by the clubs.

“A formal confirmation of the commitments and the manner of the clubs’ reintegration and participation in UEFA Club Competitions has been agreed between and signed by UEFA and those nine clubs. The approved reintegration measures are full and final,” said UEFA in a statement.

UEFA said that the nine clubs had “acknowledge and accept” that the Super League project was a mistake and had apologised to fans, national associations, national leagues, fellow European clubs and UEFA.

In an eight-point charter, UEFA said that the clubs will now “unreservedly acknowledge and accept the binding nature of the UEFA statutes and will remain committed to any UEFA club competitions each season for which that club qualifies on sporting merit”.

UEFA said that the clubs had agreed to “have substantial fines imposed if they seek to play in unauthorised competitions (100m Euros) or if they breach any other commitment they have entered into in the Club Commitment Declaration (50m Euros)”.

UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin said, “These clubs recognised their mistakes quickly and have taken action to demonstrate their contrition and future commitment to European football. The same cannot be said for the clubs that remain involved in the so-called ‘Super League’ and UEFA will deal with those clubs subsequently.”

The nine clubs are, Arsenal, AC Milan, Chelsea, Atlético Madrid, Internazionale Milano, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Pant contributes money for oxygen cylinders and beds

India wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has made monetary contribution to a charity for oxygen cylinders, beds and relief kits as the country reels under a growing number of Covid-19 cases.

India has witnessed over four lakh cases a day along with around 4,000 deaths and there seems to be no signs of abatement.

“The scale of despair across our country has been immense and something I have been deeply affected by. As someone who has seen personal loss up close, my heart goes out to all the families who have suffered over the past year and I pray for the souls of those who have left us,” Pant wrote in a note posted on his Twitter handle.

“One of the most important aspects I have learned from sport is the power of working together as a team for a common cause. I salute our frontline workers, who have been working tirelessly to help India throughout the past year. However, the cause of helping India overcome these unprecedented times needs all our collective efforts,” he added.

“I am supporting the Hemkunt Foundation through a monetary donation that will help provide O2 Cylinders with beds, COVID-relief kits and much more to the suffering across the country,” he wrote further.

Osaka, Billie Jean King get Laureus World Sports Awards

0

World No. 2 tennis player Naomi Osaka has been named ‘Sportswoman of the Year’ at the Laureus World Sports Awards for her achievements on and off the court, while tennis legend Billie Jean King was awarded the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ by the Laureus Academy.

This is Osaka’s second recognition at the Laureus Sports Awards. She won the ‘Breakthrough of the Year’ award in 2019 after a season that saw her win her first WTA title at the BNP Paribas Open and begin her ascent to the top of the game with her first US Open title that fall.

Osaka was also nominated for ‘Sportswoman of the Year’ in 2020 after a season in which she captured her first Australian Open title and become the first Japanese player to ascend to World No.1.

“I’ve watched so many of my role models win this (Sportswoman) award, so it definitely means a lot now to be holding it,” Osaka said on Friday. “I am so happy to receive it. It really means a lot to me.”

Coming out of a season interrupted by the sport’s shutdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Osaka emerged as the dominant force on hard courts. The 24-year-old marched through the US summer season, making the Western & Southern Open final before capturing the US Open, her third major title.

She continued her form in 2021, winning back-to-back Slams for the second time in her career after capturing her fourth major, at the Australian Open in February.

Osaka’s impact was not limited between the tramlines. During the Western & Southern Open, the Japanese joined in the athlete-led protests regarding racial injustice in America, a decision that led to a one-day stoppage in play. At the US Open, in an effort to raise awareness about racial injustice, Osaka wore seven masks with seven names of black victims of racial violence.

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova presented Billie Jean King with her ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’, in recognition of her excellence on the tennis court as well as her life’s work in pursuit of gender and racial equality.
