Date:

Dogs attacked two resident doctors and three others.

A stray dog inside the King George’s Medical University (KGMU) campus in Uttar Pradesh’s capital attacked two resident doctors, two paramedical staffers, and an attendant of a patient, resulting in injuries to all of them.

This incident marks the 16th such attack in the past year in the city. The university authorities informed the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC), and a team was sent to the campus. The dog was found dead, and officials suspect it was suffering from rabies, although the cause of death is unknown.

The two injured doctors, Sushma Yadav and Sanjay Gupta were given treatment for rabies and vaccines along with first aid and were discharged from the university’s infection prevention unit.

Sushma Yadav, one of the victims of the dog attack, recounted that while leaving the radio diagnostic department, a stray dog bit her right leg, and when she tried to shoo it away, it attacked her right hand.

The attack left her with a two-inch open wound on her leg. Sanjay Gupta, another victim, had a one-inch gash on his left leg. The KGMU spokesperson, Sudhir Singh, informed the LMC to catch the dog, but the dog was found dead before the team could arrive. Dr. Abhinav Verma, the Chief Veterinary Officer of LMC, confirmed that the dog suffered from rabies, a disease that makes dogs aggressive and leads to their death within a week of infection.

According to a city veterinarian, rabies may have made the dog restless, aggressive, and ferocious. Dr. Rajneesh Chandra, a vet, explained that the victims needed to be given antibodies and anti-rabies vaccines as the virus directly attacks the nervous system, which can cause paralysis or death in humans.
