In what is suspected to be one of the largest grave discoveries post the Globalization era, nearly 400 victims of Islamic State were found in Hawija, northern Iraq.
These graves were discovered as a part of Government operation which is advanced into the lands once dominated by the militant group. The Iraqi forces managed to drive away the militant group from Hawija – located 240 km from Bagdad, during its military operation in October.
The city of Hawija has been under control of ISIS militant group since 2014. ‘The militants have turned the city into execution ground. Most of the graves are within the radius of 3 km from the city, and the dead bodies of the deceased were either in prisoner’s uniform or in civilian uniform,’ an official said.
These mass graves came to light after the locals informed the Iraqi military group. An eyewitness said, ‘during the three years of IS control, the prisoners are often taken in the cars. IS militants used to shoot them and then throw them from the moving car.’
These mass executions by the IS militants clearly depict the state and conditions in which the surviving locals might have lived.
