AP Medical Aspirants’ Quota Plea Rejected by Telangana High Court:
The Telangana High Court has upheld Government Order 72 (GO 72), which restricts NEET students from Andhra Pradesh from claiming local candidate quota for MBBS or BDS admissions in colleges established after the formation of Telangana state. A division bench led by Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice N.V. Shravan Kumar delivered this verdict in response to a batch of petitions challenging the legality and arbitrariness of GO 72.
As a result, Andhra Pradesh students are no longer eligible to be considered local candidates for admission to approximately 34 medical and dental colleges established in Telangana after the state’s formation, under the 85 percent competent quota. However, they can still apply for admission in the All-India pool quota, which constitutes 15 percent of the seats.
The petitioners argued that, according to Section 95 of the AP Reorganisation Act, they had a ten-year window to secure admissions to TS medical colleges as local candidates. They contended that aside from the Presidential Order, the state government lacked the authority to restrict MBBS and BDS admissions based on place of birth or residence. They asserted that the amendment to the 2017 Rules was in violation of Article 13(2) of the Constitution.
