Australia formed a task team to combat domestic abuse
The New South Wales (NSW) Police Force has established a specialized Domestic and Family Violence Registry to address and combat domestic and family violence in the state. This registry is staffed by officers who are experts in dealing with domestic violence issues and is operational 24/7 to provide advice, guidance, and swift responses to incidents of domiciliary and family violence. NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb emphasized the significance of tackling this challenging and complex community issue, comparing it to an epidemic that requires a change in approach.
This domiciliary and Family Violence Registry is the first of its kind in Australia, signifying the state’s commitment to addressing this pressing problem. The NSW Police Force has been facing a rising number of domiciliary violence-related incidents, with a significant workload involved, estimated to make up to 40% of all police work in the state, as reported by the Review of NSW Police Force Responses to Domiciliary and Family Violence Incidents released by the NSW Law Enforcement Conduct Commission in June.
