Chess: Anand & 4 GMs Covid relief fund matches raises $5K

The online chess site www.chess.com has already raised $5,000 towards Covid-19 in India generally and also to help chess players suffering from the pandemic, said a politician.

The website raised the sum through persons who had donated to play against five-time World Chess Champion Grandmaster (GM) V.Anand and 4 other GMs Koneru Humpy, Dronavalli Harika, Nihal Sarin, and R.Praggnanandhaa on May 13 evening.

The five GMs will play simultaneous games online. According to Chess.com, it’ll match donations up to $10,000.

All funds will attend Red Cross India and therefore the Checkmate Covid fund of the All India Chess Federation (AICF).

While 70 percent of the funds raised are going to be given to Red Cross India the balance 30 percent are going to be given to AICF.

The Chess.com official told that there are 100 slots – 20 of these are to play Anand, at a price of $150, in order that raised $3,000 with all slots booked.

Each of the remaining four GMs will play 20 simultaneous games donating $25 and a sum of $2,000 raised because the slots were all booked.

“When we start the show, we’ll have a target of $15,000 and can kick-off the show with $5,000 raised. what proportion is raised depends on viewership,” the official said.

Recently the AICF Secretary told that a sum of Rs 60 lakh has been raised to date under the Checkmate Covid initiative to supply financial assistance to chess community members suffering from Covid-19.
