Duolingo receives the Apple Design Award for Creativity
Duolingo, a language learning app based in the United States, received a Design Award at the 2023 Apple Design Awards. These awards recognize outstanding achievements in the app and game design, specifically highlighting innovation, inventiveness, and technical excellence.
Over the past year, Duolingo made significant redesign improvements to its learning app. The company expressed gratitude to Ryan Sims, the VP of Design, for leading the effort and contributing to the app’s creative vision. According to Luis von Ahn, CEO and co-founder of Duolingo, the app’s success lies in its focus on being a fun and motivational company rather than solely an educational one.
Duolingo was recognized in the Delight and Fun category by Apple, which acknowledges platforms that offer engaging and enjoyable experiences that are enhanced by Apple technologies. The app has successfully transformed daily language lessons into enjoyable moments, departing from a traditional classroom-like approach.
During the past year, This app introduced a significant redesign of its learning paths. Previous versions featured a main screen referred to as “the tree,” allowing users to explore multiple learning routes. This path redesign coincided with the introduction of animations featuring Duolingo’s memorable cast of characters. These characters include Lily, an unimpressed teenager with a sarcastic slow-clap; Oscar, a dramatic and dedicated teacher; and Eddy, a fitness enthusiast with boundless enthusiasm, as described by the company.
