Noida authorities busted a fake call center that was deceiving US citizens
On Thursday, the Noida police conducted a raid on a call center and arrested 84 individuals, including 36 women. These arrests were made on charges of defrauding US citizens of significant sums of money by posing as American government officials.
The accused had access to a database containing information about approximately five lakh US citizens, including their names, contact numbers, and some financial details. They used this information to target and gain the trust of their victims. The raid took place at the call center situated in Sector 6 which had the capacity to accommodate 150 desktops. The operation was carried out around 5 p.m. on Wednesday based on information about illegal activities taking place at the facility during the night, according to DCP (Noida) Harish Chander.
This call center was of considerable size, and the police arrested a total of 84 people, including women, during the operation. The center operated during the nighttime, and the gang managed to make between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 30 lakh in just one night.
The police have identified two individuals who are suspected to be the masterminds behind this call center operation, but they are currently evading capture.
In addition to the arrests, the US embassy has been notified about this case, and the police are in the process of establishing formal communication with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Interpol.
Regarding the gang’s methods, DCP Chander explained that the callers would reach out to unsuspecting US citizens using voice messages. They would then instill fear by falsely claiming that their ‘social security number,’ a unique government-issued identity, had been ‘compromised.’
