Andhra Pradesh police took swift action on Thursday, arresting a TDP leader, Rambabu Pasumarthi, for his alleged inappropriate social media comment linked to the tragic suicide of a woman. The incident revolves around Gothi Geetanjali Devi, a homemaker from Tenali, Guntur district, who reportedly took her own life by jumping in front of a train on March 7, following remarks made about her interview praising the state government’s housing scheme.
The aftermath of Geetanjali’s death sparked a political uproar, with YSR Congress blaming TDP leaders and the opposition party alleging involvement of ruling party members. Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy condemned the harassment faced by Geetanjali and ordered strict action against social media users. He pledged Rs 20 lakh in ex-gratia for the deceased woman’s family and emphasized the need for stringent measures against those disrespecting women. Guntur SP Tushar Dudi revealed that the police identified individuals behind certain social media profiles, with plans to file charges under IPC Section 306, abetment to suicide, based on family testimony and railway investigation findings.
