South Africa’s most successful Test captain, Graeme Smith opined that Virat Kohli is not a long-term captaincy option for India. Graeme Smith comments on Kohli come at a time, with India losing the first two of the three-test series against South Africa. Virat Kohli’s team selection strategy has been questioned, and many former Indian cricketers criticized his choice.

But the comments coming from modern greats like Graeme Smith really put everyone in thought. Smith felt that, given Virat’s approach and attitude, he failed to get the best out of his players in both the Tests. Smith also called for someone, who can constructively challenge Kohli and help him grow.

Recently, Ramachandran Guha, a historian and former BCCI’s administrator, clearly listed out the powers Kohli enjoyed. Writing for a newspaper column, Guha said that, ‘everyone in the administration defers with Kohli. Because Kohli wanted an agreeable man alongside him, Ravi Shastri became the coach for the cricket team’.

Smith also pointed out that, there is a huge disconnection between Virat Kohli and the rest of the team. In fact, Gavaskar earlier stated that, though Kohli is a great leader, he needs to come down his level to the level of the player, and take the player to his level.

Smith feels that, if there is no change in environment, with no person who can challenge Kohli constructively, Kohli wouldn’t continue as a captain for long. India will be playing the third and final test in Wanderers, from 24th January 2018. Graeme Smith comments on Kohli should be an eye opener for the Indian captain, and as well as the coach.
