Copyright Clash: Ilaiyaraaja’s Legal Notice Hits Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie

Date:

The recent release of the teaser for “Coolie,” featuring Rajinikanth, has ignited immense excitement among the superstar’s fans. While Rajini’s charismatic screen presence and unique style are garnering praise, the film’s makers are facing legal challenges.

Renowned music maestro Ilaiyyaraja has served a legal notice to Sun Pictures, objecting to the use of his song “Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa” in the Coolie teaser without his consent. The song, originally from Bharathiraja’s film “Thanga Magan,” sung by SP Balasubrahmanyam and Vani Jairam, is copyrighted material, and its recreation without approval is deemed unlawful under the Copyright Act of 1957.

Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie features Rajinikanth in the role of a smuggler, adding to the anticipation surrounding the action-packed entertainer. With Shruti Haasan also on board, the film is one of Tamil cinema’s most anticipated projects, fueled by the success of both Rajini and Lokesh’s recent hits, “Jailer” and “Leo.”
