India leads West Indies by 162 runs in First Test Match.
India maintained their dominant position in the first Test against West Indies, ending the second day with a commanding lead of 162 runs and a score of 312/2 in their first innings. Debutant opener Yashasvi Jaiswal impressed with his maiden century, scoring 143 not out, while captain Rohit Sharma contributed 103 runs, marking his 10th Test hundred.
The Indian team capitalized on their advantage after bowling out West Indies for 150 on the opening day, thanks to a remarkable 5-60 performance by off-spinner R. Ashwin. Despite West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite utilizing nine bowlers, they could only claim two wickets as Jaiswal and Sharma stood firm. This match also saw India achieve a significant milestone by taking a first-innings lead without losing a wicket for the first time in Test cricket. Jaiswal and Sharma set a record-breaking opening partnership of 229 runs, the first time India has achieved a 200+ opening partnership against West Indies in Tests.
Jaiswal displayed control and composure throughout his innings, playing both conventional and unconventional shots. Rohit, on the other hand, showcased his brilliance with an array of attacking strokes. However, Rohit was dismissed for 103 when he was caught behind by wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva off the bowling of debutant Alick Athanaze. Subsequently, Shubman Gill also fell for six, but Jaiswal and Virat Kohli steadied the innings until the tea break.
