India’s star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and batsman KL Rahul won’t be playing in the second Test against England due to injuries, dealing a blow to the home team after a surprising loss in the series opener.
Jadeja injured his hamstring while attempting a quick single on Sunday, and Rahul complained of pain in his right quadriceps. It’s concerning as Rahul had previously injured his right thigh during the IPL in May last year, requiring surgery and sidelining him for four months.
In a media release, the BCCI stated, “Mr Ravindra Jadeja and Mr KL Rahul have been ruled out of the second IDFC First Bank Test against England in Vizag, starting February 02, 2024. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring the progress of the duo.”
The selection committee has added Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan, left-arm spinner Sourabh Kumar, and all-rounder Washington Sundar to the squad for the second Test.
This is Sarfaraz Khan’s first national call-up after showcasing excellent form in domestic and India A cricket. With captain Virat Kohli already unavailable for the first two Tests and the injuries to Jadeja and Rahul, India faces added challenges after the unexpected loss in the first Test.
Both Rahul and Jadeja made significant contributions in the first Test, and their absence is a setback. Sundar, known for his all-round abilities, may replace Jadeja in the playing eleven.
Rahul, who has been in stellar form since his comeback from injury, had additional workload managing wicket-keeping duties in the ODI World Cup and the recent Test series in South Africa.
While Sarfaraz deserves his call-up, the chances of Rajat Patidar making his debut in Vizag are higher. Avesh Khan will join the Test squad if needed.
India’s updated Squad for 2nd Test vs England: Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, KS Bharat (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Avesh Khan, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Washington Sundar, Sourabh Kumar.
