Indian Cyber Force Claims Canadian Website Attacks:
A pro-India hacker group, known as the Indian Cyber Force, has claimed responsibility for a two-hour-long disruption of the Canadian Armed Forces’ website.
Amidst diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, the Indian Cyber Force had previously issued warnings of impending cyberattacks on Canadian websites, slated for September 21.
In recent days, the group temporarily disabled Canada’s election authority website, Elections and Democracy, as well as an Ottawa-based public hospital’s website. They are alleged to have stolen the private financial data of numerous Canadians, which was subsequently shared on the social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter).
Daniel Le Bouthillier, head of media relations at Canada’s Department of National Defence, reported to Canada’s newspaper, The Globe and Mail, that the disruption began at noon but was resolved later in the afternoon. Some desktop users were still able to access the website, while most mobile devices could not. The Canadian Armed Forces are currently investigating the incident.
This cyberattack follows a warning from Canada’s intelligence agency, the Communications Security Establishment, to government IT administrators about potential cyber threats.
The Indian Cyber Force has also issued threats of future cyberattacks, targeting Pakistan and China on November 26, Indonesia and Pakistan on December 11, and Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, and Indonesia on January 26, 2024, as well as Pakistan, China, and Indonesia on February 14, 2024.
