Indo-Canadian Sikh admits to killing his wife with a knife

A 40-year-old Indo-Canadian Sikh man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the killing of his wife, Harpreet Kaur Gill, in late 2022 at their home in British Columbia. Indo-Canadian sikh Navinder Gill admitted to stabbing his wife multiple times, resulting in her death. Harpreet, a teacher, and mother of their three children, was found critically injured and later passed away in the hospital.

Navinder was taken into custody by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team on December 15, 2022, and was charged the following day with second-degree murder. His lawyer stated that Navinder understands the gravity of his actions and expressed remorse during the court proceedings.

Navinder entered a guilty plea on June 22, and his sentencing will take place at the New Westminster Supreme Court next month. Harpreet’s family, who reside in India, are devastated by the loss and are concerned about the future custody of their grandchildren. Cases of domestic violence, unfortunately, are not uncommon in Canada, with Statistics Canada reporting 90 intimate partner-related homicides out of a total of 788 homicide victims in 2021.
