As India wins the ODI series, Ishan Kishan joins a select group
Inexperienced opener Ishan Kishan achieved a remarkable feat as India secured a comprehensive 200-run victory over the West Indies in the third ODI, clinching the series. Kishan became one of only six Indian players to score a half-century in each match of a three-game bilateral ODI series. The elite group includes cricket greats like Kris Srikkanth, Dilip Vengsarkar, Mohammad Azharuddin, MS Dhoni, and Shreyas Iyer.
Despite having big shoes to fill, the 25-year-old Kishan has made a strong impact in international cricket since his debut in July 2021. With 617 runs from 17 ODIs, he has shown promising consistency and is being considered for selection in India’s squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. His most notable performance to date was a record-breaking 210 against Bangladesh last year.
In the recent series against the West Indies, Kishan displayed his improved consistency and aggressive style of play, contributing significantly to India’s victories. Alongside fellow opener Shubman Gill, he built a solid partnership of 143 runs before being stumped by West Indies captain Shai Hope. Gill, Sanju Samson, and stand-in captain Hardik Pandya also scored half-centuries in the absence of rested stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, helping India post an imposing total of 351/5.
For his exceptional performance throughout the series, Kishan was rightfully named the Player of the Series, having scored a total of 184 runs at an impressive average of 61.33. With his current form and attacking style of play, he adds another potent option to India’s top-order batting lineup.
