5 inmates were slain during a prison riot in Brazil
A violent riot broke out at the Antonio Amaro Alves maximum security prison in Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil, resulting in the death of five inmates and injuries to two others. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning when 13 inmates attempted to escape but were captured by prison guards outside the facility. Subsequently, the inmates took two guards hostage.
During the day-long riot, one of the guards managed to escape, but the other guard remained held by the prisoners until Thursday morning when authorities finally brought the situation under control.
The identities of the deceased inmates have not been disclosed yet, and civilian police are at the prison to identify them. Inside the prison, authorities discovered 15 weapons, prompting an investigation into how the arms were smuggled into the facility.
The Antonio Amaro Alves prison, which was constructed 15 years ago, is a maximum security facility and currently houses 99 inmates, all of whom are leaders of criminal organizations.
