Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies has been selected as India’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars, as announced by the Film Federation of India on Monday.
The Hindi film, a witty satire on patriarchy, was chosen from a pool of 29 contenders, which included the Bollywood blockbuster Animal, Malayalam National Award winner Aattam, and Cannes winner All We Imagine As Light.
The 13-member jury, led by renowned Assamese filmmaker Jahu Barua, unanimously picked Laapataa Ladies, produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, to compete in the Best International Film category at the Academy Awards.
Other notable films in the running included the Tamil movie Maharaja, Telugu titles Kalki 2898 AD and Hanu-Man, along with Hindi films Swatantraya Veer Savarkar and Article 370.
Last year, India’s entry was the Malayalam superhit 2018: Everyone is a Hero.
