Maareesan Finds Success on OTT After Theatrical Flop
Actor Fahadh Faasil’s Maareesan, which struggled to make an impact at the box office, has finally found its audience after premiering on Netflix. Released in July, the film received decent reviews but failed to generate strong numbers in theatres, ending up as a flop.
However, ever since its OTT release, Maareesan has been receiving overwhelming appreciation from viewers. Audiences are praising the film on social media, with special mention for the engaging storyline and stellar performances. Interestingly, in contrast, Vijay Sethupathi’s Thalaivan Thalaivi, which released in the same week and worked well theatrically, failed to click with the OTT crowd.
Directed by Sudheesh Shankar, Maareesan follows the story of a thief (Fahadh Faasil) who befriends and manipulates an old man with Alzheimer’s (Vadivelu) to loot him. While the film starts off slow, audienceslowlyoted that it gradually grips attention with its unique narrative. Both Fahadh and Vadivelu’s performances have been highly appreciated, while Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music has also gained fresh recognition after the OTT release.
With this turnaround, Maareesan joins the list of films that flopped in theatres but found success on OTT, proving once again the power of digital platforms in giving films a second life.
