Amala Paul: If you have right mindset, you can make it big on OTT

Actress Amala Paul, who plays the cop Durga in the upcoming Telugu web series “Kudi Yedamaithe”, feels that the best part of the rise of OTT culture is that now there is something for everyone.

The actress, who has made a mark in Tamil and Malayalam films, seemed excited about the boom of digital platforms.

“The best part of OTT is the creative aspects to it, like there are so many beautiful, crazy and wide variety of stories. The scripts I am seeing from 2020 are so different, there is so much uniqueness and growth and everyone is ready to experiment,” Amala tells IANS.

She adds: “The best part is that if you have the right mindset, you can make it bit. It has scope for everyone. I miss going to theatre and I miss having my big popcorn bucket and cold drink — nothing can replace that — but right now I think it is best to go with the flow.”

While most of her films have released in theatres, working on a digital platform doesn’t make thing any different or difficult for the actress.

“Evolution and progressing has been my thing. Change is something important for me and I can adapt beautifully to change. That is how the world evolves. When TV came, radio took a back space. I feel very blessed to be part of the generation where I have seen a VCR, CD, DVD, home theatre, theatre and now its OTT,” says the actress, whose series will steam on Aha Video.

Vidya Balan: ‘Is there fear of loss of stardom? Not at the moment’

Vidya Balan says she does not have the fear of losing the stardom she has gained over the years with her power-packed performances. She admits, though, that it hurts when a film of hers does not do perform well because she is always intensely involved in anything that she does.

“When you are going through a low, it is very tough, especially because it is all very public. When your films don’t work, for example. It affects me badly because I am so intensely involved in my films. I give so much of myself to my films,” Vidya said while speaking to IANS.

The actress says the most painful part of the experience is that she feels “rejected or unloved” when such a thing happens.

“It is heartbreaking, there is no doubt about it and then you feel unloved and rejected. I think that is what is painful. You can’t make sense of it. Only later are you able to look at the situation objectively and say, ‘oh that is why this film did not resonate with people’. When it is fresh, I think it is always very tough,” she said.

However, loss of stardom is a notion that has never bothered her, Vidya added. “Is there fear of loss of stardom? Not at the moment, no,” said the actress, flashing the trademark smile.

Vidya was recently seen in Amit Masurkar’s film “Sherni”, where she played an upright forest officer on the lookout for a man-eating tigress. The film also features Sharat Saxena, Mukul Chadda, Vijay Raaz, Ila Arun and Brijendra Kala, and garnered a positive response upon release. The film released on Amazon Prime Video.

Raima Sen: The industry is about survival of the fittest

Actress Raima Sen says she has realised over her years in Bollywood that one is as good as one’s last release. The actress adds that the film industry is all about the survival of the fittest.

“You are as good as your last release in this industry. So, you will always be noticed for your last work but I guess that is fine and that is the way it is. You just have to deal with it positively because there are a lot of ups and downs,” Raima told IANS.

She says it is only natural that success and failure should co-exist in an industry where survival stakes are always high.

“There will always be failure where there is success, and the industry is about survival of the fittest. So, obviously the show that does well will get you recognised and the show that does not do well will not get you recognised,” Raima added.

The actress’ last outing, the web series “The Last Hour”, was well received and she feels such judgements happen in every sphere.

“That is part and parcel of the industry. I would not call it brutal. I think it happens in every other sphere as well,” she added.

“I have done a lot of Hindi films that have not been released or are stopped halfway but now with the help of OTT platforms they will get released. A lot of my short films have been released much later and now you will see me more,” she promised her fans.

Raima will next be seen in the upcoming OTT show “Mai”. About the show, she said: “I am doing another big show for Netflix called ‘Mai’. So, you will get to see me a lot more.”

Shruti Haasan: I have been in therapy when I was younger

Actress Shruti Haasan has often spoken about the need to look after mental health, especially in the time of the pandemic. Stressing on the need for professional guidance in such cases, the actress says she has been in therapy when she was younger and yet, being a part of an industry that can frequently be high on the stress factor, she still feels inadequate on many days.

Shruti feels it is important to be aware if someone needs help over mental health and not brush the issue under the carpet with an “I am fine” attitude.

“Mental health is really simple and really complex at the same time. I always use this example that if you have a stomach ache, you will have ajwain or yogurt and avoid spicy stuff on the first day. On the second day you will say, ‘ok, let me take medicine’, but on the third day when you are still in pain, you will go to the doctor and seek help. At that point no one in your family says, ‘hum hai, tum doctor ke paas kyun ja rahe ho’ (we are here, why would you need a doctor)?” she says, while speaking to IANS.

“I see that as the whole problem because of how the fam jam scene is in India. It’s like ‘you have your cousins, your friends, why can’t you talk to me?’ I understand the sentiment but when it comes to mental health, the worst attitude you can have is ‘chin up’ or ‘I am fine’,” she adds.

The actress also highlights that many people are not even aware of the help they need.

“The cracks start happening and usually I see people have what I call ‘mild breakdowns’. Usually, people don’t even realise what they are going through,” she says.

“The feeling of inadequacy can be so overwhelming and, mind you, I was a psychology student and dropped out but continued studying psychology. I have friends who have therapists. I have been in therapy when I was younger and still when it comes to managing my emotions and sensitivity, in an industry that is very heightened in every sense — be it stress or creativity — I felt inadequate on many days,” the actress points out.

“It took me a while to say, ‘I just need a bit of me-time’. It’s not an easy thing but me having this opportunity to speak about and somebody reading this, that is how the change spreads,” she says.

Shruti has been spending lockdown working on her music and by the look of her social media posts, doing whatever makes her happy. The actress says that her life changed when she acknowledged the need to seek help.

“I must say that I have always spoken about mental health. This is something that when I acknowledged, my life changed. Acknowledging things about myself and getting the help I needed without feeling imperfect, inadequate or judged. Mostly, there is society’s judgement and stigma around. But when the pandemic hit, everyone started talking about it because it had to be discussed. People were feeling a sense of loss — loss of financial security, love and control,” she says.

The actress sees a positive change all around now.

“I believe people world over are a lot more aware and, especially in India, people are a lot more speaking about it. I genuinely believe that mental health awareness has come to the forefront. There are so many avenues for people to understand that you can get help online because of the distance. People know how to use technology — be it through zoom calls or skype calls. I was always doing therapy long distance because my therapist was based out of London. So, I always knew that it is possible once you have made that initial connection,” says the actress.
