Raima Sen: The industry is about survival of the fittest

Actress Raima Sen says she has realised over her years in Bollywood that one is as good as one’s last release. The actress adds that the film industry is all about the survival of the fittest.

“You are as good as your last release in this industry. So, you will always be noticed for your last work but I guess that is fine and that is the way it is. You just have to deal with it positively because there are a lot of ups and downs,” Raima told IANS.

She says it is only natural that success and failure should co-exist in an industry where survival stakes are always high.

“There will always be failure where there is success, and the industry is about survival of the fittest. So, obviously the show that does well will get you recognised and the show that does not do well will not get you recognised,” Raima added.

The actress’ last outing, the web series “The Last Hour”, was well received and she feels such judgements happen in every sphere.

“That is part and parcel of the industry. I would not call it brutal. I think it happens in every other sphere as well,” she added.

“I have done a lot of Hindi films that have not been released or are stopped halfway but now with the help of OTT platforms they will get released. A lot of my short films have been released much later and now you will see me more,” she promised her fans.

Raima will next be seen in the upcoming OTT show “Mai”. About the show, she said: “I am doing another big show for Netflix called ‘Mai’. So, you will get to see me a lot more.”

Shruti Haasan: I have been in therapy when I was younger

Actress Shruti Haasan has often spoken about the need to look after mental health, especially in the time of the pandemic. Stressing on the need for professional guidance in such cases, the actress says she has been in therapy when she was younger and yet, being a part of an industry that can frequently be high on the stress factor, she still feels inadequate on many days.

Shruti feels it is important to be aware if someone needs help over mental health and not brush the issue under the carpet with an “I am fine” attitude.

“Mental health is really simple and really complex at the same time. I always use this example that if you have a stomach ache, you will have ajwain or yogurt and avoid spicy stuff on the first day. On the second day you will say, ‘ok, let me take medicine’, but on the third day when you are still in pain, you will go to the doctor and seek help. At that point no one in your family says, ‘hum hai, tum doctor ke paas kyun ja rahe ho’ (we are here, why would you need a doctor)?” she says, while speaking to IANS.

“I see that as the whole problem because of how the fam jam scene is in India. It’s like ‘you have your cousins, your friends, why can’t you talk to me?’ I understand the sentiment but when it comes to mental health, the worst attitude you can have is ‘chin up’ or ‘I am fine’,” she adds.

The actress also highlights that many people are not even aware of the help they need.

“The cracks start happening and usually I see people have what I call ‘mild breakdowns’. Usually, people don’t even realise what they are going through,” she says.

“The feeling of inadequacy can be so overwhelming and, mind you, I was a psychology student and dropped out but continued studying psychology. I have friends who have therapists. I have been in therapy when I was younger and still when it comes to managing my emotions and sensitivity, in an industry that is very heightened in every sense — be it stress or creativity — I felt inadequate on many days,” the actress points out.

“It took me a while to say, ‘I just need a bit of me-time’. It’s not an easy thing but me having this opportunity to speak about and somebody reading this, that is how the change spreads,” she says.

Shruti has been spending lockdown working on her music and by the look of her social media posts, doing whatever makes her happy. The actress says that her life changed when she acknowledged the need to seek help.

“I must say that I have always spoken about mental health. This is something that when I acknowledged, my life changed. Acknowledging things about myself and getting the help I needed without feeling imperfect, inadequate or judged. Mostly, there is society’s judgement and stigma around. But when the pandemic hit, everyone started talking about it because it had to be discussed. People were feeling a sense of loss — loss of financial security, love and control,” she says.

The actress sees a positive change all around now.

“I believe people world over are a lot more aware and, especially in India, people are a lot more speaking about it. I genuinely believe that mental health awareness has come to the forefront. There are so many avenues for people to understand that you can get help online because of the distance. People know how to use technology — be it through zoom calls or skype calls. I was always doing therapy long distance because my therapist was based out of London. So, I always knew that it is possible once you have made that initial connection,” says the actress.

Rohit Shetty: Slight fear when you do stunts is genuinely needed

Think Rohit Shetty and you’re thinking all things that snub fear on the Bollywood masala screen, from gravity-defying car stunts to high-octane action sequences. The filmmaker, however, feels to pull off a good stunt, “fear is genuinely needed”.

“I don’t fear anything but, yes, there is slight fear when you do stunts and that fear is genuinely needed. It pushes you to take precautions and not be irresponsible. If we are brave, then we often tend to become reckless and not take appropriate care that is needed,” Rohit told IANS, his signature smile in place.

The filmmaker, whose calling card on the small screen is hosting the adventure reality show “Khatron Ke Khiladi”, says he is not much of a lover of “Khatra” (danger), though he admits action will always be his first love.

“It’s not that I am in love with ‘khatra’ but I am in love with action,” he said, about what drives him to be a part of the show, now all set to air its 11th season. Rohit returns as host, and guiding the celebrity contestants facing their fears on the show.

“This season is actually special. We have taken the show to a new level, which you will come to know when you watch it. We have made it bigger this time. I have been doing this show for seven years now and the challenge this time was to make it even more engaging,” he said.

“Given that it is an action show, the team in Cape Town (where the new season was shot) was equally overwhelmed and excited,” he pointed out, adding: “I am happy and confident because the energy of the shoot was right and apt. I am waiting for the audience to watch it. Generally, one is scared before the release but this time I am confident and looking forward to it,” sums up Rohit, a name synonymous to action in Bollywood films.

On the Bollywood front, Rohit Shetty awaits the release of his new film, the cop action drama “Sooryavanshi”, starring Akshay Kumar with Katrina Kaif.

Pranav Sachdev on playing four roles in ‘Tiny Disasters’

Actor Pranav Sachdev plays four different characters in the upcoming short film “Tiny Disasters”, and is naturally excited.

“I am getting an opportunity to play four different roles in the same film and that I believe is a dream for any actor. I play a casanova, a heartbroken lover, a super-rich brat and an addict. So, I play different characters, it’s basically a different representation of Gen Z,” he says.

The film contains stories that end in a few minutes and can be consumed on the go. Pranav explains the idea behind this film: “We are the microwave generation, who want everything very quickly and trends show that audience attention span is getting shorter by the day. Short films are snackable, a quick dose of entertainment and lockdown has only accelerated the digital revolution. Hence, people have developed a greater appetite for shorter, crisper and juicier content. I could be wrong but I predict shorter content to be the future of entertainment.”

“These ‘quirkies’ are for the generation that wants everything instantaneous and swift. The stories begin on one note but end in a very Guy De Maupassant-esque manner, with disastrous outcomes. These stories are mini and quirky hence we thought ‘Tiny Disaster’ would be a fitting title,” he adds.

The film is directed by Gautam Arora and also features Nupur Nagpal, Nirmal Kothari, Deeya Dey and Deepali Jain. It is set to release in August.

Pranav Sachdev is seen in shows such as “Zindagi Dot Com” and “Agar Tum Saath Ho” and he recently worked in the film “Almariyaan”, which deals with homosexuality.

Karisma Kapoor calls Suniel Shetty the biggest prankster

Actress Karisma Kapoor says Suniel Shetty, Akshay Kumar and Aamir Khan are the biggest pranksters on a film set in Bollywood, though for her Suniel will always top the charts.

Karisma and Suniel have worked together in films such as “Rakshak”, “Sapoot”, “Baaz: Bird In Danger” and “Krishna”, and she recalled two occasion where he pranked her.

“We were shooting for a film in Chennai and I saw a man wearing a dhoti sitting at a distance. A lot of people flocked around so, I thought that he must be a senior artiste from the South who I may not know. Later, Anna (Suniel Shetty) asked me to meet him. We clicked photos together and talked for almost 20 minutes. Later, before the shot, the man in dhoti earlier was dabbing my face with a puff! I immediately went to Suniel, enquiring about him, and to my shock he revealed it was a prank and the person was actually his make-up artist,” recalls Karisma.

She mentions a second incident, too.

“During an action sequence, I noticed there were two men with daggers coming at each other. In no time, they started fighting. I was so scared that I asked for the police or someone from the unit to stop the fight. Just when I was literally in tears, Suniel revealed it was just a prank!” the actress says.

Karisma shares these nostalgic bits of her career in an upcoming weekend episode of “Indian Idol season 12”, which airs on Sony Entertainment Television.

The upcoming track of the show reveals how Shaheer as Dev and Sonakshi (played by Erica Fernandes) have started taking each other for granted. They celebrate their anniversary very late in the day.

Shaheer shares his personal take on this sub plot and also the relevance of these minute things in a relationship.

“I usually tend to miss out on significant dates and anniversaries, and realise only when someone reminds me. But I would suggest that one should acknowledge and celebrate milestones in a relationship,” he says.

He adds: “Time doesn’t stand still anyone. With time we evolve and our priorities change. Remembering these dates and celebrating anniversaries can also help in keeping the spark of a relationship alive. Even though one or other thing occupies one’s mind and time, it is important for a couple to prioritise their relationship over everything else.”
