‘Gehraiyaan’: A slow-burn captivating noir drama review

Film: ‘Gehraiyaan’ (Streaming on Amazon Prime). Duration: 148 minutes.

Director: Shakun Batra. Cast: Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday, Dhairya Karwa, Naseeruddin Shah and Rajat Kapoor.

‘Gehraiyaan’ is a slow-burn, captivating, noir drama that draws you into its immersive narrative, which tells us, “Life is all about choices. … Let’s put all this behind us and move on.”

Shots of the deep sea and its rolling waves form a subtle leitmotif in the film that reminds you of life’s mysteries, innumerable choices, and the momentum of moving on.

But are choices and moving on so simple? At least not for Alisha, a yoga instructor in Mumbai who is at the crossroads of her life. She has a strained relationship with her father, who lives in Nashik.

She is also haunted by memories of her mother’s demise. Moreover, there are roadblocks in the way of her entrepreneurial endeavors, and the spark in her six-year-old relationship with Karan, an aspiring author, seems to have petered out.

But when she catches up with younger cousin Tia and her fiancé Zain, sparks fly between her and Zain. She gets drawn to him. Then, burdened with the uncertainty of their relationship, she tries to stay away from Zain. But eventually, after Zain convinces her that the feeling is mutual, she inevitably gives in to the relationship.

So far, so good, but when the plot abruptly shifts gear from romance to noir, ‘Gehraiyaan’ becomes an altogether less predictable, more volatile story whose twists and turns revolve around the selfishness of human beings and the desperate lengths to which it can drive people.

Craftily, the plot is tense on the brink of a psychological drama with its painful uncertainties, extremes of emotions, and the onslaught of hormones. The struggle to strike a balance is innately dramatic.

Director Shakun Batra’s cleverness lies in fashioning from these ingredients a relaxed but stylish thriller in which suspense is accompanied by a scuffle for survival instinct and, perhaps toughest of all, hope.

Deepika and Siddhant, as Alisha and Zain, are sincere in their roles; attractive and responsive with an instinctive ability for calm expression and restrained emotions. They create a completely trustworthy pair of complementary forces.

Supporting them with equal fervor are Ananya Panday and Dhairya Karwa as Tia and Karan. They both are impressive and earnest.

Naseeruddin Shah as Alisha’s laid-back dad, and Rajat Kapoor as Zain’s cold and calculating colleague, are both stoically effective but perfunctorily limited by the script.

Mounted with ace production values, cinematographer Kaushal Shah’s location shots, inland or over water, in Alibaug or in Mumbai, look grim and evocative, perfectly in line with the film’s breathtaking rhythm.

Overall, ‘Gehraiyaan’ keeps you hooked till the end.

Sharwanand, Rashmika’s ‘Aadavaallu Meeku Johaarlu’ teaser promises family entertainment

With Sharwanand, Rashmika Mandanna, Khushbu, Radhika Sarathkumar, Urvashi, and others in important roles, the much-hyped family entertainer ‘Aadavaallu Meeku Johaarlu’ is readying for its grand release soon. The makers who dropped the teaser from the movie, promise a good family entertainer.

The teaser begins with an introduction by the hero, who quotes his helplessness, as his family members hunt for his bride-to-be. “From rejecting girls, to being rejected, we have come too far”, Sharwanand is seen saying on a sarcastic note.

As the teaser goes on, Sharwanand finally meet the girl of his dreams – Rashmika. Rashmika and Sharwa develop a good rapport with each other, but she seems to be avoiding marriage with him, which puzzles the hero.

Well, it appears like director Tirumala Kishore has followed the same narrative from his movie ‘Nenu Sailaja’, which has a similar track between the lead pair. But, what makes the ‘Aadavallu Meeku Joharlu’ teaser interesting is the wit imbibed in the narrative.

Well, the movie is closer to its theatrical release and seems to appeal to the family audience. The production values make the teaser more appealing, as the buzz around the release increases.

Slated for its release on February 25, ‘Aadavallu Meeku Joharlu’ also stars Vennela Kishore, Ravi Shankar, Sathya, Pradeep Rawath, Gopa Raju, Benarjee, Kalyani Natarajan, Rajasri Nair, Jhansi, Rajitha, Sathya Krishna, RCM Raju, and others.

Sudhakar Cherukuri is the producer, while popular cinematographer Sujith Sarang is handling cinematography, while Sreekar Prasad who won several national awards is the editor.

Oscars 2022 ceremony won’t require Covid vaccinations

This year’s Oscars ceremony will not require in-person attendees to provide proof of vaccination against Covid.

After a 2021 ceremony that saw the Academy Awards downsize to a smaller gathering at Los Angeles’ Union Station, the Oscars will return to its traditional setting in the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard for its upcoming ceremony on March 27.

It is not yet known if the audience size might be reduced this year.

Last year’s ceremony featured strict Covid testing and masking policies for in-person attendees, in accordance with health and safety protocols. In the year since vaccines against the virus have become widely available to the general public.

Guidelines encouraging proof of vaccination have become commonplace for large-scale events, especially in Los Angeles.

Although the Academy will suggest attendees be vaccinated, the 2022 Oscars ceremony will also require attendees to be tested prior to attending, with unvaccinated guests having additional and more stringent testing requirements.

Under this rule, the Academy is technically complying with Los Angeles County’s policy on “indoor mega-events”, which require either full vaccination status or day-of negative COVID-19 tests to all attendees ages 2 and older.

However, it should be noted that other awards events this season, such as the Screen Actors Guild and Critics Choice Association, are still requiring attendees to provide proof of vaccination for their ceremonies.

L.A. County is still some time away from lifting its indoor mask mandate.

On Tuesday, public health director Barbara Ferrer indicated barring extremely low case levels, the earliest time that masks requirements would likely be reversed is late April, well after the Academy Awards’ March ceremony date.

The Academy has yet to release an official Covid policy for its upcoming ceremony.

Reports indicate that the Academy may have elected to take a less strict position on vaccination status as a no-entry policy could have prevented some unvaccinated nominees or presenters from attending the ceremony.
