Julia Roberts video on environment conservation generates buzz again

An old video of actress Julia Roberts on environment conservation has started generating buzz again as it trended on social media.

The video, which was uploaded on the YouTube channel of the organisation Conservative International six years ago has got people discussing the issue once again.

Incidentally, the video had gone viral in April 2020, too.

In the video, which is one minute and 58 seconds long, the actress speaks from the point of view of Mother Earth.

She says in the video: “Some call me nature, others call me mother nature. I have been here for over four and a half billion years — 22,500 times longer than you. I don’t really need people but people need me. Yes, your future depends on me. When I thrive, you thrive. When I falter, you falter, or worse.”

She goes on to make a powerful statement on behalf of earth as strong visuals add impact to her voice.

“But I have been here for eons. I have fed species greater than you and I have starved species greater than you. My oceans, my soil, my flowing streams, my forests, they all can take you or leave you,” she says.

Sima Taparia on ‘Indian Matchmaking’: ‘More the memes, the show becomes popular’

When the web series “Indian Matchmaking” released in 2020, it set tongues wagging on social media as it highlighted one of the country’s archaic traditions — arranged marriage. A year later, the show has been nominated at the upcoming 73rd Emmy Awards.

Sima Taparia, a Mumbai-based elite matchmaker, became popular as Sima aunty and due to her catchphrase, “Hi, I am Sima Taparia from Mumbai”. She is over-the-moon after the Emmy nod, and lacks words to express her gratitude.

“‘Indian Matchmaking’ has completed one year and the show has gone to the Emmy Awards. I am grateful and I cannot even express. Us going to the Emmys is a very big achievement,” Sima told an interview.

In the eight-part series, Sima goes about trying to find suitable matches for her affluent clients in India and abroad.

Decoding the popularity of the show globally, Sima says it was the realistic approach that made the show binge-worthy.

“The whole world enjoyed it because it was a reality show. The way I am talking to you the same way I was talking there, just the camera was following me. I was simple and humble, and the way it was they portrayed me. So, the show was a hit and all my Indian values were portrayed in the show,” the real-life matchmaker said.

For Sima, “Indian Matchmaking” really “rocked the world”.

She added: “So, people loved me and it was a reality show. Everyone loved Sima aunty. It rocked the world. It was beyond my dream that the show would rock the world and be so successful. I have got global recognition and popularity.”

With great love comes criticism too, and was tagged as “controversial” and “cringe-worthy” for showcasing in-your-face casteism, coloursim, astrology and misogyny. The series was soon a subject of memes and jokes.

Sima, or Sima aunty as is liked to be called, remains unfazed. Instead, she says she enjoyed the social media banter.

“It didn’t affect me because in everything there is a little negative and positive. More the negatives and positives the more the show got popular. It didn’t affect me even one per cent,” Sima said.

In fact, Sima lauded the creativity of people making her memes.

“Also, so many memes are there! What creativity of our people in India,” laughed Sima.

“I see all the memes. More the memes, the show becomes popular. So wherever I got time I used to enjoy the memes and they tickled my funnybones. It didn’t bother me. It is the public’s choice — some will criticise and some will not. Nothing I mind. I have not taken anything on my mind,” she added.

A lesser known fact about Sima the matchmaker is she has already featured in a documentary titled “A Suitable Girl”, which went to the Tribeca Film Festival, winning the Albert Maysles New Documentary Director Award. It was directed by Smriti Mundhra, who came looking for a match for herself through the renowned matchmaker.

Talking about what made Sima say yes to “Indian Matchmaking”, she said: “A documentary came in 2017 called ‘A Suitable Girl’ and it won an award at Tribeca Film Festival. So, Smriti Mundhra came to Mumbai for her match. She was t

he director of ‘A Suitable Girl’ and when came and met me, she saw that I am a matchmaker and thought she could make a documentary with ‘Sima didi’.”

She went down memory lane and revealed that it was after the documentary was feted with an honour that she was approached for the Netflix show.

“Four years she shot with me, wherever I would go she would come and tape that. When the docu-series was completed in 2014, when it won an award, they pitched the idea to Netflix and then they contacted me and I said ‘Okay’ but never in my dreams had I thought that the show would rock the world,” said Sima.

Asked if arranged marriages were relevant at a time when Hinge, Bumble and Tinder were gaining momentum, Sima wished these dating applications “good luck”.

She said: “My work is to personally visit and give a personal touch to all the matches. I personally travel, I understand personalities, understand preferences, see the standard of living, see their business, nature, see the girl and the boy. Then I filter and scan, and then I keep the bio datas fit my client — that is my role. So, all the people have confidence in me that what Sima ji is saying is perfect. I don’t know what Tinder, Bumble are. So good luck to them,” added Sima, who has a fan following of over 37.5 K on Instagram currently.

Will the audience get to see their beloved Sima aunty again? “That I cannot say today, but my association with Netflix has been pleasant, so I am looking forward to working with them,” she concluded.

This looks back at some of Sima’s line that went viral on social media.

Ruhi Chaturvedi: Dad initially said no when I got offer to play negative role in ‘Kundali Bhagya’

Ruhi Chaturvedi, who plays the antagonist Sherlyn Khurana in the popular soap “Kundali Bhagya”, recalls her father’s reaction when she got the offer long back.

“I remember when I got the offer, my father was sceptical about me taking up this character. Since it was a negative role, he felt I would get typecast and immediately said no. It took a while for me to convince him by saying that it was just a two-month cameo and at the end of the first month, the character would turn into a positive role before she exits the show. That’s when he agreed to let me take the offer,” Ruhi recalls.

The show has completed four years and 1,000 episodes but her role is still the same, though Ruhi loves her character. “I have come to realise that a negative character is a pivotal element for a positive character to succeed in a story. It’s like Raavan tha isliye Ram bhi the (Ram exists because there was Raavan),” she reasons.

In the ongoing track Ruhi as Sherlyn has lost her child and is going through a rough patch, so are we going to see a change in her character?

The actress replies: “Right now there are not many changes. Of course, she (Sherlyn) is emotionally broken and has also become vulnerable. But soon she will figure out ways to take revenge. Viewers are going to see her have a few emotional breakdowns once in a while.”

Ruhi’s career spans from modelling to films and television. She finds her journey satisfying and comfortable. “The entire journey has been absolutely incredible. If I have to be honest, I actually did not face that many struggles while finding my way on television. I still remember that January 17, 2017 was my last fashion show in Jaipur. Post that I came back and told my parents that I didn’t want to do fashion shows anymore and wanted to be a part of television,” she recalls.

She goes on charting her journey: “On February 2, I began auditioning for various characters and by August 10 I was on air with a Balaji show. It was all really unbelievable because I had always heard stories of people struggling for years and facing rejections. I feel extremely blessed that way to have had an easy start and glad how things have turned up.”

For Ruhi, acting is her ultimate passion and since childhood she used to admire Madhuri Dixit.

“I always wanted to be an actor as Madhuri Dixit used to stay in my building. As a child, I used to see quite a lot of films of hers and loved her performance. In fact, I have also visited different sets with her and that’s how the inclination to pursue acting came within me. I would never have become anything else. This was the ultimate thing,” she says.

After playing a negative role for a long time, Ruhi wants to play a mysterious character. “I would love to play a role like Vidya Balan in ‘Kahaani’. Till the last frame, no-one knew what her character was about, and she was a very mysterious figure. Roles like that really intrigue me,” she sums up.
