Speaking at CCXP Mexico 2026, acclaimed filmmaker S. S. Rajamouli revealed that Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, stands as the most ambitious film of his career. He shared that dreaming on a grand scale has always been integral to his filmmaking journey.
Elaborating on the film’s visual canvas, Rajamouli said India’s ancient temples and architectural legacy have long inspired him. For Varanasi, the palace sequences and the city’s imposing atmosphere are shaped by the eternal grandeur of Kashi and the country’s rich temple architecture.
The much-anticipated film is slated for a theatrical release on April 7, 2027. Priyanka Chopra plays the female lead, while Prithviraj Sukumaran takes on the antagonist’s role. The project is produced by Sri Durga Arts, with music composed by Oscar-winner M. M. Keeravani.
