Abhay Deol Explaining how ‘shamelessly’ the award function works

Sushant Singh Rajput’s unfortunate death has not only brought back the insider vs outsider debate in Bollywood but also other unfair practices of the film industry.

Actor Abhay Deol took to Instagram on Friday to call out Bollywood award shows.Explaining how ‘shamelessly’ the award function works, the actor gave an example of his own film ‘Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara’ which was directed by Zoya Akhtar and featured Hrithik Roshan and Farhan Akhtar along with Deol.

The actor spoke about how he along with co-actor Farhan Akhtar got “demoted” at several award functions for their work in the hit film ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’.

“`Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara`, released in 2011. Need to chant this title to myself everyday nowadays! Also a great watch when anxious or stressed.

“I would like to mention that almost all the award functions demoted me and Farhan from main leads, and nominated us as `supporting actors`. Hrithik and Katrina were nominated as `actors in a leading role`. So by the industry`s own logic, this was a film about a man and a woman falling in love, with the man supported by his friends for whatever decisions he takes,” Deol wrote.

Sushant Singh Rajput’s tragic death left Bollywood shocked with heart-felt tributes pouring in from those who worked with the actor and Kedarnath writer Kanika Dhillon is one among them. Ms Dhillon gave us an insight into Sushant Singh Rajput as an actor as was seen on set, writing about his dedication not only towards his craft but also towards a film. Kanika Dhillon wrote that Sushant had added notes and ideas to the script of Kedarnath, converting the original 100-page script into 300-pages of material.

“I noticed that my 100 page script of Kedarnath had swollen into a 300 page novel as I saw Sushant carrying it. I asked him ‘What have you done? Added scenes to it?’ He smiled earnestly and simply said – ‘I made my notes and attached them. I read scenes every day and find a new meaning – a new take and I add it to the page’.”

In her post, Kanika Dhillon added that what defined Sushant as an actor was “sheer hardwork and relentless focus”: “I’d never seen such dedication or method applied to this craft before. All actors have their ways that work for them – but sheer hardwork and relentless focus was his. I felt acutely aware of every word I wrote in that script… cos I was aware Sushant would be reading it over and over and toiling over it to bring forth the best interpretation of the written words effortlessly.”

Directed by Abhishek Kapoor, 2018 film Kedarnath was set against the backdrop of the 2013 Kedarnath floods, in which 4,000 people died and thousands went missing. Sushant Singh Rajput was cast as a Muslim porter named Mansoor, who died in a landslide but managed to save Mukku, his love interest, played by Sara Ali Khan. Referring to Sushant’s character in Kedarnath, Ms Dhillon wrote: “I make sense of you going away just like Mansoor did – Mansoor who left us all – too soon- with a disarming smile – with an unfinished love story that somehow was complete in his head… and so did you.”

Our crazy holi! Those laughs we shared, those sensitive low phases of life when we were there for each other, you more than anyone. The things you did to bring a smile on Sushant’s face,” wrote Sandip Singh.

You both are true love. These thoughts, these memories are hurting my heart…how do I get them back! I want them back! I want ‘us three’ back! Remember the malpua!? And how he asked for my mother’s mutton curry like a little kid!”

You could’ve saved him if he just let you be there…You were his girlfriend, his wife, his mother, his best friend forever. I love you Ankita. I hope I never lose a friend like you. I won’t be able to take it.”

Pawan Kalyan and Krish Jagarlamudi’s ambitious project bankrolled by AM Ratnam witnessed a massive set back even before the film rolled onto the floors. The film which had formal Pooja muhurat in Jan this year is supposed to take off after Pawan wrapping up the shoot of Vakeel Saab, Pink remake.

The makers had erected a huge set at the Aluminium factory in the city. It’s a sea and ship set erected as it is going to play a prominent role in the film. It was erected such that it look like a natural sea. Special efforts have been taken while erected the set to make it look very real. But all those efforts have gone into the drain.

The recent rains have damaged the set. The set is now in a condition that it can’t be used for the shoot. While the makers are already bogged down by the delay due to lockdown, the damage of this set is going to incur major losses to the production house.

It’s estimated that about Rs 1 Crore would be a loss to producer AM Ratnam. This is indeed a shock. Now, the makers need to erect another set and it’s going to take more time and money. Director Krish and producer Ratnam are in dilemma.

The Corona has already affected the industry badly and one is not sure when the market is going to revive and theaters are going to reopen and function as usual. With theatrical revenues likely to get affected and production costs escalating, big-budget filmmakers are worried lot.

Sonu Nigam open up about the “cruel” machinations of the music industry

0

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death prompted Sonu Nigam to open up about the “cruel” machinations of the music industry in a new video blog. The 46-year-singer shared his vlog with a troubling caption, “You might soon hear about suicides in the music industry”, in which he called out the “mafias” of the music industry, two of them in particular, without taking names. “Sushant Singh Rajput died, an actor died.

Tomorrow, you can hear the same about a singer, or a composer, or a lyrics writer. Because the music scenario in our country… there are bigger ‘mafias’ here that in the film industry, unfortunately,” said Mr Nigam. “The power rests in the hands of two of them… just two from the music industry. They own companies. They have the power to make someone sing or not sing,” he added.

In the comments section on Sonu Nigam’s video, several followers said that the music labels which the singer talked about are probably T-Series, Zee Music Company and even YRF Music.

“Everybody wants to ‘rule’ the business,” said Sonu Nigam, who repeatedly requested to the alleged “music mafias” to be kind and considerate towards new talent with messages such as these addressed to them: “Don’t do this! This is not right”, “You will be questioned”, “Be a little kind please, to the newcomers.”

“It’s very difficult for the new kids, very difficult… I speak to every one of them. They are troubled that the producer wants to work with them, the director wants to work, even the music composer wants to work with them but the music company will say: ‘This is not our artiste’,” he added.

“I was lucky that I joined (the industry) at a young age, I escaped the clutches,” he added, saying he joined music industry in Mumbai in 1991 but “I got out of it. I don’t have any wish to sing for the last 15 years. It’s ok. I am happy in my own world. But I have seen the frustration in the eyes, in the voice, in the words of new singers, new composers, new lyrics writers… tears of blood, sometimes.”

Sonu Nigam also made an oblique reference to actor Salman Khan as he talked about an actor, at whom “fingers are being pointed” right now. Talking about replacing singers, Sonu Nigam said: “He’s done that with Arijit Singh.” In 2016, Mr Khan had reportedly asked to drop a song recorded by Arijit Singh from his film Sultan after he was offended by the singer’s mannerisms at an award show.

Sonu Nigam wrapped his video alleging that in the past, he was called for song recordings and then his songs were dubbed by different artists. “If you can do this with me, then what you guys must have been doing with the newcomers,” he said and added: “Hope more people don’t die by suicide.”

Sushant Singh Rajput died by suicide, say the police, who are carrying out an investigation. He was found dead at his Mumbai residence on June 14. The police will also probe allegations that Mr Rajput was depressed because of professional rivalry. Politician Sanjay Nirupam alleged Sushant lost six out of some seven films which he had signed in the last few months.
