Low social media following means no roles for TV actors

Social media following seems to have become quite an obsession today with almost every celebrity trying to increase their number of followers. As long as the idea was to augment personal image, it was okay. The trouble is, a lot of television actors bemoan social media following has started dictating whether they get new work. Producers are increasingly checking the social media following an actor enjoys before casting them in roles.

Actor Abhinandan Jindal, who is currently part of the show Guddan Tumse Na Ho Payega, says he ended up losing a show because of fewer followers on social media.

“I have actually seen how the number of followers you have actually affect a maker’s decision to take you in a show or not. I have only 27.1K followers on Instagram and this actually affects me at times. Some days back, I went for an audition. It was for a similar role to the one I played in ‘Guddan Tumse Na Ho Payega’. They asked me to show my Instagram profile and now I can’t help but think I had almost bagged the role, but eventually didn’t get it because of my low number of followers. That means now the scenario is such that we need to pay money to increase our followers and then get work on screen!” he says.

Actor Mickey Dudaaney, who is currently seen in the show Santoshi Maa: Sunayein Vrat Kathayein, agrees. “Things have changed now. It has become very important now to have more followers as you are asked about this now. They ask you if you are a content creator or not,” he says.

Actor Piew Jana, who was last seen in the show Krishna Chali London, says the criteria adopted by makers to choose their cast is misleading. “Just as an actor is judged by the number of hit films he or she has given, similarly a celebrity’s popularity is gauged through the number of followers he or she has on social media. But this is actually quite misleading as a lot of people resort to false ways to increase their followers on social media so that they can become famous. For me, it has always been about how talented an artist is and also how humble he is. These are the things that should matter,” she says.

Actor Sanjay Suri, who is part of the web series Dev DD 2, urges producers not to get swayed by these figures.

“Don’t fall for social media numbers. They might not even be your audience. Just because someone is an influencer does not mean that they will work on the screen, too. This is like when the Page 3 culture began. People used to think that if you are featured on Page 3 that means you are popular, but it was not so, and it did not even bring in the numbers. It is a very shortsighted way of seeing things. My followers are few on Instagram and it is all organic. If someone is casting me because of small numbers or big numbers, they are being stupid. They have to cast me as per the role. You see when they cast you on this basis, they are depending on you to promote the show,” he says.

Rakhi Sawant: Went to ‘Bigg Boss 14’ to seek a career comeback

Rakhi Sawant reveals she participated in Bigg Boss 14 even as she was going through a particularly painful phase in life. Although she was under stress, she fought back to entertain people, because her objective for participating in the show was to try and make a comeback in her career.

“I fought back. My personal life was also painful. My mother was unwell and she has been undergoing chemotherapy. There was stress in my personal life and I still entertained people. I had so much pressure and responsibility,” said Rakhi.

She did not shy away from talking about her personal life on national television. She shared shocking revelations about her life, claiming that a man had forced himself on her when she was young, in return for money. She spoke of her marriage with someone called Ritesh, saying that her husband was already married and had a child when they got married.

Does she regret revealing too much about her personal life in front of the country?

“When you live in the house, there is a time when you break. I broke down because I was going through a lot of pain. My mother’s pain, my love wasn’t successful, my marriage was not successful either. Somewhere, I would break down looking at a couple. I broke completely,” she said.

Rakhi said that she did text her “mystery” husband Ritesh once she was out of the house. “I messaged my husband. I haven’t spoken to him and I don’t know what reaction he would have,” she revealed.

On Sunday night, Rakhi walked away with Rs 14 lakh from Bigg Boss 14 during the grand finale. The dancer claimed that the reason she went to the controversial show was to try and make a comeback because her career was down in recent times and that the show has given her a second chance.

Rakhi was the first contestant to walk away with money on the grand finale night hosted by Salman Khan. She had entered the house in November last year as a challenger and had a journey of almost three months, which ended on Sunday night.

“The journey was very beautiful. So many people want to go to Bigg Boss and getting an entry is such a big thing. I wanted to make a comeback and my career was down. Bigg Boss gave me a second (chance)… Everyone goes through ups and downs and I got that push from here. I am so happy that I will be able to do something now… There were so many ups and downs in the Bigg Boss 14 house,” Rakhi told IANS.

Is she hoping for a comeback in Bollywood considering she was one of the most popular contestants in the show this season?

“Definitely. I would like to do a series. In fact, I will do any work that comes my way. This is why I went to Bigg Boss — so that I could make a comeback and earn a lot of money. (I want to) Get my mother operated and keep her well,” Rakhi said.

During her stay in the house, Rakhi was seen as a threat by the other contestants courtesy of her bizarre antics. She had several altercations with other housemates such as Jasmin Bhasin, Rubina Dilaik, and Abhinav Shukla among others.

“I was very affected when my nose broke in the show. They broke my props’s head and threw water on me. But I controlled my anger in the show because then you’d have to leave the show. They taunted me, they spoke about my married life and said I was doing ‘nataunki’ and (that I was) ‘fake’. But I did not lose confidence.” she said.

Rakhi said that she sought support from Bigg Boss, show host Salman, and contestants such as Devoleena Bhattacharjee.

She says she will remain friends with Rubina, who won the 14th season, and her husband Abhinav Shukla.

“I am very happy that Rubina won,” she concluded.

Namit Das pens note about cobbler who trained him for ‘A Suitable Boy’ role

Actor Namit Das, who was last seen in Mira Nair’s OTT-released series A suitable boy, on Monday recalled learning how to make a shoe for his role.

The actor wrote a long post on Instagram remembering the time he did workshops with a local cobbler to hone his skills for the role.

Posting a picture of himself in the get-up of a cobbler, he wrote: “Last year while working on ‘A suitable boy’ I had to go and train with a local cobbler. The idea was to make me more comfortable with the shoe-making process for a sequence in the show which was about Haresh making a shoe. One could have never learned the process in ten sessions but just sitting with the desi cobbler made me come close to what it meant to be Haresh. He knows how to make a shoe and hence the knowledge of how to be self-sufficient in a world that is constantly wanting you to be dependent on many things. There is that sense of dignity in this guy in the most challenging situations. He is good at making something that is considered secondary but it’s a basic necessity which one can’t do away with. And all of this in the context of 1952 when India was only 5 years old.”

The actor, who shared screen space with actors Ishaan Khatter and Tabu in the show, went on to write: “I spent a few days on the road with the desi cobbler. Touching & cutting leather. And I can’t even begin to tell you how difficult it was. It’s tough work because it’s heavy on your back. The toughest part is when you have to shave the soft part of the wrong side of the leather. I never got it right. I don’t think I can be successful in learning the craft in this lifetime but what I learned was to stay grounded. Shoes are essential. Your feet need it. You need them. The love that you get from an old shoe is similar to the love that you get in an old relationship. Keep both of these safe because only they know what you need the most.”

In the end, he thanked director Mira Nair and hopes to meet the cobbler one day, who sits near VT station in Mumbai.

“Thank you Mira for making these classes happen. I forget to remember what that shoe maker’s name was. But he sits near VT station. One day I am going to meet him and ask him how he is. Hope he recognizes me,” he ended the post on an emotional note.

Rubina Dilaik: Not for a single day will I take my relationship for granted

Bigg Boss 14 winner Rubina Dilaik had openly spoken about going for a divorce with her husband and former contestant Abhinav Shukla in the show. However, she now tells us their stint on the show mended the relationship and that she will not take their bond for granted anymore.

“It will be ever-evolving and not for a single day will I take my relationship for granted again. That’s a promise I have made,” Rubina told IANS.

She had a clash with contestant Rakhi Sawant on the show, after the latter claimed “crazy love” for Abhinav.

Will she fix her relationship with Rakhi? “Yes, like I said (I will move ahead) with a clean slate. All relationships from here will evolve and I am going to carry forward the ones that are good. The bad relationships, I have ended there (in Bigg Boss 14). The new story and new beginning will happen from here,” she said.

During her stint, Rubina, who married Abhinav in 2018, had said that she was on the verge of divorcing Abhinav before entering the reality show. On the show, she had shared that they were about to get divorced and had given each other time till November, and that is the reason they decided to enter Bigg Boss 14 together.

Rubina came into the reality show with a huge fan base she had earlier garnered with her roles in shows such as Shakti: Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki and Chotti Bahu, and she took home the Bigg Boss trophy plus Rs 36 lakh in the grand finale on Sunday night.

What does she yearn to do now? “I am open for new surprises,” she said.
