Sona Mohapatra: The men in film land only stick to milk and biscuits?

Singer Sona Mohapatra finds it strange that only actresses are being singled out as alleged drug users in Bollywood, while none of their male counterparts have come under the radar of suspicion.

On Monday, in a verified Facebook post, Sona also spoke about the benefits of CBD oil, of which she learnt during her sister’s cancer treatment last year.

Sona’s post comes at a time when Bollywood’s top actresses Deepika Padukone, Sara Ali Khan, Shraddha Kapoor and Rakul Preet Singh are being grilled by the NCB, which is exploring the drugs-related angle in the Sushant Singh Rajput death case. Sona expressed that it feels “rather strange” that only a few female stars are under the scanner, as if the male actors “only stick to milk and biscuits”.

Her Facebook post reads: “The TV stories feel like a farce esp CBD oil and ganja and Whatapp chats being talked about with such fervour. I discovered what the former was when my sister went through multiple surgeries for cancer last year. Was told of how magical the healing and pain alleviating this could be for her recovery. Unfortunately we couldn’t find any easily in Mumbai. Cannabis has been the base of all Ayurveda till the British banned it I’ve learnt, thus taking away most of its efficacy. So conservatives & ‘custodians of culture’ should please note this.”

“All this drug discussion would mean something if they pursued the actual hard drug cartels and suppliers also. It is also rather strange that a list of women stars are in the limelight even here. Like the men in film land only stick to milk and biscuits? Having said this I don’t have copious tears flowing for any film star. The thing is, these stars are also paid big bucks by brands as ‘role models’ and so you can’t really have your cake and eat it too?”

“If you want to earn disproportionate amounts of money, you need to be ready to go under the people’s scanner too. Tiger Woods did lose Nike, when it was found that he wasn’t such a paean of family values after all. There are enough & more stars like Di Caprio etc who do not accept endorsements & choose to live life on their own terms. Say no to double standards please? & yes, dear India, actions do have consequences so best if you SAY NO TO DRUGS too.”

Sona on Monday also informed that actress Kangana Ranaut has blocked her on Twitter.

“And when I clicked to check what Adi was talking about cus I don’t really follow her.. discovered this!! Hilarious. Kangana wants to criticise everyone & everything but doesn’t know the world works on reciprocity? Have to know how to take it, if you keep dishing it out. #fairplay,” the singer tweeted from her verified account along with a screenshot which reads @KanganaTeam blocked you.

“Also, Kangana hasn’t ever stood up for anyone but her own self & hasn’t acknowledged anyone who has cheered her in any case. That’s not a change maker or even thought leader of any worth. Yes, she’s been brave to call out some of the industry’s ills. That’s all. Will call her bluff,” she wrote in another tweet.

Sona had recently taken a jibe at Kangana after the latter referred to actress Urmila Matondkar as a “soft porn star” and Sonam Kapoor as a “mafia bimbo”.

“Calling others Gold digger, mafia bimbo, Sasti copy, Soft porn star?!? Playing the messiah of the masses by using a tragic death is the worst act of opportunism. Doesn’t make you the pillar of virtue, justice or the flagbearer of “Hindu Cultural values”. Highlights the worst side,” Sona had tweeted taking a dig at Kangana.

Irrfan Khan’s son Babil pens moving note

Babil Khan, elder son of late actor Irrfan Khan, has penned an emotional note for his father and said that he would give every cell in his presence to remember his skin.

Babil took to Instagram and shared a motley of pictures of his father Irrfan and him, working behind the camera.

He wrote: “I’m working Baba. You pushed through demons, up in your feelings, no one gets it, no? I’d give every cell in my presence to remember your skin, My spinal chord will rotate and my soul can implode, in a search to feel you close, I wish I would have known how it feels to end, so I can begin.”

“Why are you surprised? It’s the job of the Politician to choose to lie, and when I’m bleeding, I know, sleep is just death being shy. I pray for you, our farmers, in our self-illusiveness we thought we were better, I hope we can surrender. I hope we find a way. I miss you India. (No political comments please, this is not a political expression.)”

Babil and his mother Sutapa Sikdar keep sharing memories of Irrfan on social media. The actor passed away in Mumbai on April 29 this year.

Irrfan was still under treatment when he returned to acting with “Angrezi Medium”, a follow-up to his 2017 hit, “Hindi Medium”.

Irrfan’s final film, incidentally, has also been Bollywood’s last release in the theatres for now, before the Covid-19 pandemic forced a total lockdown of the nation.

In “Angrezi Medium”, Irrfan played a small town father willing to go to any extent to fulfil his daughter’s dream of a foreign education, so much so that he lands in a hilarious mess.

Sui Dhaaga maker Sharat Katariya: My characters come from personal experiences

The Varun Dhawan-Anushka Sharma starrer Sui Dhaaga released two years ago on this day. Director Sharat Katariya, opening up on his creative process, says the characters in his films come from his personal experiences.

The 2018 release “Sui Dhaaga” was Katariya’s third directorial after “10ml Love” (2010) and “Dum Laga Ke Haisha” (2015). He also contributed as a writer in films like “Bheja Fry” (2007) and “Titli” (2015).

Katariya, who also penned dialogues in “Fan” (2016) and “Befikre” (2016), has carved his niche for crafting critically acclaimed commercial entertainers that celebrate realism, as a writer and filmmaker.

“I was born in Delhi. The characters normally come from personal experiences of growing up. All these characters whether its Prem and Sandhya (Dum Laga Ke Haisha) or Mauji and Mamta (Sui Dhaaga) or other characters, like their parents, their family, their neighbours, whatsoever you write or you are influenced from, are people who you come across,” Katariya said.

“Most of these people in the films are the characters one has come across in life while growing up,” he added.

His films always make a subtle social commentary.

Asked if he tries to bring social change through his works, Katariya said: “When you write you are not thinking about all these things. You write what you feel for, that’s the primary thing. Anything that you feel for has a resonance to the social environment and it automatically reflects in the script.”

“One doesn’t start from there, one starts from an incident or something that inspires or moves you. That’s where is the beginning,” he added.

Citing the example of “Dum Laga Ke Haisha”, Katariya says the film’s genesis was seeing the character of a wife winning a championship.

“I was not thinking of social relevance or anything like that. I was thinking of a story, but when you are developing characters, a woman is overweight and a man is thin and it’s a marriage which is not working, then automatically all the social conflicts and stigmas will automatically come into the story,” he said.

“Because the characters grow up in real environment and they have their own prejudices and conflicts and hence the social commentary.”

He added that it was the same with “Sui Dhaaga”.

“I saw a man under a tree, who was working as a tailor to make ends meet and from there it began. These are the real people, these are the real heroes. For me, he is a superhero. Superheroes are not just about flying in the air. Superheroes are also about making their ends meet in the most difficult scenarios,” the filmmaker said.

“That’s how it came in and became social commentary. The idea is never to manipulate writing in a way that it becomes that,” he summed up.

Kangana posts pic from Kashi Vishvanath trip

Kangana Ranaut was in the mood for spiritual nostalgia over the weekend, as she took to social media on Saturday and shared a picture from the time she visited Kashi Vishvanath Temple in Varanasi.

In the image, Kangana is seen meditating along with actress Juhi Chawla and spiritual leader Sadhguru.

“This picture is from my recent visit to Kashi Vishvanath. Har Har Mahadev,” she wrote alongside the snap on Twitter. The post shows Kangana dressed in ethnic saree, teaming up with a maroon shawl. She also wears a garland.

Kangana has been in the news for consecutive controversies. She declared 99 percent of Bollywood was on drugs, and then locked horns with the Shiv Sena government in Maharashtra by saying the situation in Mumbai had become as bad as POK. This was followed by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) initiating a demolition drive at her office in the city, which was stayed after a High Court order.

On the work front, the actress has three films coming up — the J. Jayalalithaa biopic “Thalaivi”, the action thriller “Dhaakad”, and “Tejas”, where she plays a fighter pilot.

NCB ‘question bank’ for Sara, Deepika, Shraddha

Three Bollywood divas — Deepika Padukone, Sara Ali Khan, and Shraddha Kapoor — are being questioned by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in a drugs-related case linked to the death of an actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

The agency after questioning several other accused in the case has prepared a list of questions that it is seeking answers to from the three actors which can spell trouble for them.

According to NCB sources, the three actors have been asked to join the probe after several alleged chats came to light where drugs were being discussed. The source said that Deepika will be first asked to identify the mobile number in the alleged chat with her former manager Karishma Prakash. She will also be asked if she sent those messages or someone on her behalf sent the alleged messages enquiring about “maal” from Karishma.

The sources said that the NCB will also ask Deepika, who is the daughter of badminton icon Prakash Padukone, if she used to consume drugs, if yes, from where she used to procure them and who made the payment for the drugs.

The NCB will also ask her if she was procuring the drugs for her personal consumption or for someone else and since when she has been using these substances and who all were the persons who provided her these drugs. She will also be asked for how long she has known Karishma and Sushant’s former talent manager Jaya Saha, who worked with Kwan Talent Management Agency.

Similarly, Shraddha, who is the daughter of actor Shakti Kapoor, will be asked about her alleged chats with Saha to get the CBD oil. The NCB source said that she will be asked since when she was procuring drugs and for whom and whether she consumed them and who paid for them.

The source said that Shraddha, who starred with Sushant in “Chichhore”, will also be questioned about her visits to the Pawna resort, where the alleged drugs party was hosted, along with Sushant. She will be asked for how long she knew Sushant and did they consume drugs together and who procured the drugs for the parties, and who made the payment for them.

Meanwhile, Sara, daughter of actor Saif Ali Khan, is also being questioned in the case and will be asked if she too consumed drugs. Sara’s troubles began after Sushant’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty in a television interview claimed that the late actor got into the habit of smoking marijuana during the shooting of “Kedarnath”.

Sara and Sushant were the lead actors of “Kedarnath”. Sara will also be questioned if she knew of the drug usage by Sushant during the shooting of the film and from where these drugs came and who paid for them.

The NCB has already recorded the statement of Sushant’s former manager Shruti Modi, Bollywood actor Rakul Preet Singh, Dharma Productions former executive producer Kshitij Prasad Ravi, Kwan Talent Management Agency CEO Dhruv Chitgopekar, producer Madhu Mantena Varma and several others.

The NCB has arrested Rhea, her brother Showik, Sushant’s house manager Samuel Miranda, personal staff Dipesh Sawant and 16 drug peddlers in the case.

The NCB registered a case under the NDPS Act after the Enforcement Directorate (ED), probing a money laundering case linked to the death of Sushant on the basis of a Bihar Police FIR, wrote to the NCB. The ED had detected several drug chats from the seized electronic devices of the accused.

The mortal remains of famous playback singer and Padma awardee S.P. Balasubrahmanyam, popular as SPB or Balu in the movie world, was laid to rest with police honors at his farmhouse near here on Saturday.

At about 12.30 p.m. SPB’s body was lowered into a dug-up pit bringing to end a great musical era.

The legendary singer who has recorded over 40,000 songs in 16 languages over a period of five decades, died on Friday afternoon due to cardio-respiratory arrest at the M.G.H. Healthcare.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of people stood in a long queue to pay homage to the singer as well as celebrities from the movie world at the farmhouse.

The singer’s family performed the last rites.

The mortal remains were brought to the farmhouse on Friday evening.

On Friday, a large number of people gathered at his residence here to have a last glimpse of the singer and pay their respects.

Later in the evening, his body was taken in a van to his farmhouse at Thamaraipakkam. Enroute several people stood on the pavement and bade SPB a tearful goodbye.

On August 5, in a Facebook post, the 74-year-old SPB said that he was suffering from a very mild attack of coronavirus and had got himself hospitalized to take a rest.

He had said that though the doctors had advised him to stay at home and take a rest, he decided to be in a hospital, as at home his family members would get concerned.

SPB hoped to get discharged from the hospital in two days. But it was not to be.
