‘Tadap’: And the fault lies in Ahan Shetty’s Stars

Film: ‘Tadap (Showing in Theatres); Duration: 130 minutes.
Directors: Milan Luthria
Cast: Tara Sutaria, Ahan Shetty, Sumit Gulati, Saurabh Shukla, Kumud Mishra
Rating: **1/2
Debutant Ahan Shetty is a promising actor and he delivers with all earnestness. He plays Ishana an orphan brought up by a local godfather called “Daddy” (Saurabh Shukla). He is enticed by Ramisa the daughter of MLA Damodar Nautiyal (Kumud Mishra) who notices him dancing while leading a victory procession. After their brief romantic overture, he falls hook line and sinker for her and keeps pining for her despite all odds.

‘Tadap’ is rich material for its talented actors. It is a simple, emotion-packed unrequited love story inspired by a true incident that occurred a few years ago. But Director Milan Luthria unravels the tale in the most convoluted and tedious manner.

Set in Mussoorie, the film begins on an unwarranted note followed by an action-packed chase between the chaser and the chase. Though we know that the chaser is the hero of the film, the reason for the chase was and is still unclear. As the plot develops, you realise the telling is complex by its sheer script, direction, and editing.

Narrated in a non-linear manner, the film begins as a clunky action thriller, then flits through the romance zone, and by the time it reaches the climax it crashes with gore and horror tropes.

Each scene appears dramatically staged and directed in an outdated fashion. Except for a few stray dialogues, most of the conversation too reflects that period. To make matters worse the editing is jerky. This is noticed especially in the scene just before the interval. Also, due to the poor editing, the timelines are smudged, and you keep guessing the plausibility of the tale.

During the first two acts, your mind keeps digressing, and it is only in the final act that you realise how a strong and wonderful story is marred by its complex telling.

While the story revolves around Ishana, Tara Sutaria as Ramisa leaves an indelible impact with an author-backed role. She is the only character you take back home after the viewing.

Most of the supporting cast, including Saurabh Shukla, Kumud Mishra, and Sumit Gulati, who plays Ishana’s friend, are all good in their character skins.

The songs, especially the one picturised by the riverside, seem forced into the narrative.

Overall, the film mounted with moderate production values – looks and feels like a B grade- 1990s film.

Actor Siddharth: Stop persecuting the film industry

Actor Siddharth, who recently appeared in the movie ‘Maha Samudram’ alongside Sharwanand, had written a series of tweets on Thursday questioning the government on low cap of movie ticket prices.

Siddharth suggested the Andhra Pradesh government, to calculate the average house rent and per capita consumer spending on durables, and then decide the prices of movie tickets. He also brings in, a simple example of how much money he had spent on watching a movie, when he watched a movie abroad, for the first time.

“The first time I saw a movie abroad was 25 years ago. I used my student I-card and saw a movie for 8 dollars. That was Rs. 200 at the time. Today our films match all countries in technology, talent and employment…. #SaveCinema”, Siddharth’s Tweet reads.

Going on, about the same issue, the actor wrote: “A film’s budget and scale is not decided by the consumer… It is decided by the creator and the investor. No individual has the right to decide how much anyone earns from cinema.”

“Why is it that the film industry has to constantly be seen as a problem area by governments intent on telling them how to recover their investment?” the Rang De Basanti’ star questioned.

Siddharth opined that the Government Orders for ticket rates and limits on the number of shows, which comes under the violation of the MRTP Act. “Give cinema and cinema halls a chance to survive. Please,” he appealed.

Siddharth is one among the very few actors who have taken a stand against movie ticket price issues in Andhra Pradesh. Pawan Kalyan, Nani, Chiranjeevi, and Director Raghavendra Rao are the celebrities who have openly given their statements on the issue to date.

Varun Tej’s ‘Ghani’ likely to get postponed

Telugu actor Varun Tej is all set to allure the audience with his upcoming movie titled ‘Ghani’. However, there is a buzz that the release of the sports drama, which is supposed to hit the screens during the third week of December, has been postponed.

Now that the makers of ‘Ghani’ are plotting for a postponement, sources believe the movie would hit the screens in March 2022. ‘Ghani’, which is supposed to clash with Nani’s ‘Shyam Singha Roy’ on December 24, is said to be postponed due to obvious reasons.

It is reported that the makers of ‘Ghani’ and ‘Shyam Singha Roy’ have come to a consensus in order to avoid the clash in theatres.

As both the movies deserve to get enough attention from the audience, analysts, who had a brief discussion with the makers, indicated that solo releases would favour the movies with a good amount of attention, as well as box-office collections.

So, the makers of ‘Ghani’ seem to have backed off, postponing the movie release, to avoid a box-office clash. With this, Nani’s ‘Shyam Singha Roy’ gets a clear line, as it’s going to be a solo release for the film. The fresh release date of ‘Ghani’ is yet to be finalized by the makers.

Helmed by Kiran Korapati, ‘Ghani’ is a tale of a boxer’s transformation. Varun Tej has worked hard for the movie, as he also underwent a physical transformation, to fit into the role.
