Augsburg upset Bayern 2-1 in Bundesliga

First-half goals from Mads Pedersen and Andre Hahn secured Augsburg a surprising 2-1 win over frontrunners Bayern Munich at the curtain raiser of the 12th round in Bundesliga here.

Bayern had a bright start into the clash on Friday night and could have broken the deadlock with seven minutes gone, but Omar Richards pulled over the target from inside the box. Augsburg responded well to Bayern’s early chance and staged a well-positioned bulwark as the game clock ticked.

The Fuggerstadter then shocked Bayern with the opener out of the blue in the 23rd minute when Andi Zeqiri’s good build-up work and cross into the box allowed Pedersen to hammer home the lead into the top right corner.

Bayern lacked in accuracy in the final third and invited Augsburg to make it two as Zeqiri dispossessed Marcel Sabitzer before finding Hahn, who nodded home the 2-0 advantage in the 35th minute, Xinhua reports. The German record champions responded with furious attacks and eventually halved the deficit three minutes later after Robert Lewandowski made the most of Thomas Muller’s back-heel lay-up.

After the restart, Bayern continued to press forward but lacked once again in accuracy as Lewandowski volleyed a loose ball from close range over the target with five minutes into the second half. Augsburg focused fully on its defence and kept all its men behind the ball whereas uninspired Bayern couldn’t find a gap in the host’s defence.

Alphonso Davies and Lewandowski came close but couldn’t beat Augsburg goalkeeper Rafal Giekiwicz in the closing stages.

With the result, Bayern Munich suffered its second loss of the season. Meanwhile, Augsburg secured vital points to climb out of the bottom three onto the 15th spot.

“Congrats to Augsburg and coach Markus Weinzierl. They wrapped a deserved victory today. We didn’t create enough chances to reap a point here and we are of course disappointed,” Bayern head coach Julian Nagelsmann said.

“My team performed very well over 90 minutes. We scored twice in the first half to pave the way for the win. Bayern increased the pressure after the restart, but we stood firm and snatched a deserved win,” Augsburg head coach Markus Weinzierl said.

The following fixtures are set for later on Saturday: Runners-up Borussia Dortmund host Stuttgart, Armenia Bielefeld see Wolfsburg, Bayer Leverkusen meet Bochum, Borussia Monchengladbach face Greuther Furth, Hoffenheim take on Leipzig and Union Berlin encounter local rivals Hertha Berlin.

Kamal Haasan, ‘Jai Bhim’ star Suriya hail farmers for their ‘victory’

Welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to repeal the three contentious farm laws, actor and politician Kamal Haasan on Saturday congratulated farmers, who, he said, had got their victory through a non-violent struggle.

Taking to Twitter, Kamal Haasan also went on to point out how his fledgling political party, Makkal Needhi Maiam, had firmly opposed the laws and said that those moments when his party leaders went to Delhi to join the protesting farmers were truly historic and they must be proud of their association with the movement.

It wasn’t just Kamal Haasan who welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement on Friday. Tamil star Suriya, who finds himself caught in a political maelstrom over his film, ‘Jai Bhim’, tweeted his thoughts on the issue late on Friday night.

He said: “The victory of the non-violent struggle staged by farmers gives hope. In a democracy, it is the people who are the masters. The government’s decision to pay attention to the people’s feelings makes us happy. My heartfelt wishes to the farmers who firmly fought right till the very end.”

Earlier in the day, Suriya’s brother Karthi had welcomed the government’s decision and congratulated the farmers who had taken part in the agitation against the laws.

‘Bigg Boss 15’ buzz: Shamita Shetty all set to return to the house?

Shamita Shetty, who left the reality show ‘Bigg Boss 15’ on medical grounds, has re-entered the house, according to sources, and will be seen on ‘Weekend Ka Vaar’ with Rashami Desai, Devoleena Bhattacharjee and Abhijit Bichukale (last seen on ‘Bigg Boss Marathi Season 2’), all of whom are wild card entries. The channel, though, has not confirmed this news.

Shamita left immediately after Raqesh Bapat’s exit. It was rumoured initially that Raqesh could also re-enter the show, but it was confirmed later that he wasn’t.

Bapat, in fact, took to social media to share updates on the state of his health and how he felt helpless, even though he was willing to continue in the show for a longer time. He thanked his fans for always supporting him.

His chemistry with Shamita, whether on ‘Bigg Boss OTT’ or on “Bigg Boss 15′, had caught the attention of their fans. The exit of both together therefore came as a shock. Now, as Shamita is returning, there could be more twists in the game inside the house, much to the delight of the fans of the show.

From Yakshagana to cyber crime, new Kannada releases go experimental

With the release of three big Kannada movies — ‘Mugilpete’, ‘100’ and ‘Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana’ — on Friday, audiences across Karnataka are savouring their big cinema moment.

All three are experimental movies presented in commercial packages. Raj B. Shetty of ‘Ondu Motteya Kathe’ fame has teamed up with actor Rishab Shetty for ‘Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana’, which uses Yakshagana (the traditional performing art of coastal Karnataka) to narrate the story of an ego clash between the gods Shiva and Hari.

The film’s trailer, released on October 15, garnered 2.5 million views in just four days and created a positive buzz in the industry.

Director Raj B. Shetty, who also plays the lead role in the movie, sounded confident about the film’s box-office appeal. “We got a very good response during the premiere show and are confident the audience will love it,” he said.

The plot of popular actor and TV presenter Ramesh Aravind’s crime thriller ‘100’ revolves around events centered around social networking and mobile technology. The movie also dwells on the disturbing negative side of social media.

“This is a film about cyber crime,” Aravind said. “Audiences will see a different Ramesh Aravind in the movie. It is about how a police officer’s family copes with an act of cyber crime targeted at it,” he added.

Manuranjan Ravichandran, Sandalwood showman Ravichandran’s son. is hoping to make a grand comeback with ‘Mugilpete’. “I am confident about the movie,” Ravichandran said. “My son Manuranjan has shown maturity in his performance in this movie,” he added.

Manuranjan appealed to the audience to watch the movie for its storyline rather than coming to see the son of Ravichandran.

Sreya Muthukumar of ‘Akkad Bakkad’ says Raj Kaushal taught her value of hard work

Actress Sreya Muthukumar says her role in the web series Akkad Bakkad Rafu Chakkar was multi-layered and complex. She also talks about how she learnt the value of hard work from the late director Raj Kaushal

Speaking about her onscreen character, Khushi’, she says: “My debut role in a web series was so complex, layered and nuanced. Playing Khushi’ felt challenging initially, but once we were on set, things clicked quite organically.”

Sreya continues: “‘Khushi’ on the surface seems like an innocent and naive young woman who doesn’t have much to contribute. As the show unfolds, however, we start seeing different sides to her as she gains confidence and becomes more forthcoming. By the end of the show, her transformation is quite evident.”

The actress shares on her working experience with the late director Raj Kaushal and says the most important things that she learned while shooting for the series with him is to give prominence to human connection.

“Working with Raj was an amazing experience, and I will always be grateful that he chose to cast me in this show. He was the most supportive, encouraging and warm person – he was the same both on set and off. He wasn’t just a director and we weren’t just the cast and crew on his set, we were all family. This wasn’t just any project, it was his dream.”

Recalling the late director, Sreya said that he never did anything half-heartedly, and welcomed everyone into his life with open arms.

“He was so confident in my abilities that it was impossible for me to ever doubt myself. He even asked me to sing on one of the tracks in the show. He encouraged me to keep singing and acting; he made everyone feel special. From him, I’ve learnt to prioritise kindness and human connection, dream hard and work even harder, and to make sure that I stay true to who I am. I miss him dearly,” shares the actress.

Sreya talked about bagging this opportunity during the pandemic.

“I was in Bangalore during the pandemic, and at that time, auditions were just picking up again. The script and especially the character seemed really interesting, so I sent in a self tape audition and tried not to think too much about it. Most actors will know that you keep on auditioning, and you hardly ever get the part! However, this time, soon after I sent the audition, I got a call from Raj (Kaushal).”

“We spoke on video call and he asked me to be a part of the show. And that was that. I couldn’t believe it. It was a great feeling,” she concludes.

The show features Anuj Rampal, Swati Semwal, Mohan Agashe, Alisha Chopra, Shishir Sharma, Manish Chaudhari, Sudhanshu Pandey and Vicky Arora along with the actress.

Akkad Bakkad Rafu Chakkar’ streams on Prime Video.
