Rashmika, Yash channel social media power for Kannada cinema

With ‘Forbes’ magazine rating Rashmika Mandanna as South Indian cinema’s most influential social media star, and Yash of ‘KGF’ fame ranking No. 3, it’s a moment of celebration for Kannada film fans.

It’s also indicative of the growing pan-Indian visibility of Sandalwood film stars such as Rashmika, Yash and Kichcha Sudeep. Rashmika, in fact, has left behind her Tollywood compatriots Samantha Ruth Prabhu, who is ranked No. 4, and Allu Arjun, who follows at No. 5. The Kannada star’s social media handles, as a result, have been inundated with congratulatory messages from her fans.

The rankings were based on views, likes and comments garnered by posts and videos shared by celebrities of the Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada film industries.

Rashmika’s social media content centres around her forthcoming movies and her takes on fashion. Yash, who’ll be seen soon in the ‘KGF’ sequel, posts pictures of his children and family celebrations, and of his travels and film projects. Both stars have ensured that the footprint of Kannada cinema extends much beyond its immediate market.

Neha Sharma-starrer ‘Aafat-E-Ishq’ trailer out

The trailer of Neha Sharma-starrer ‘Aafat-E-Ishq’ was released on Monday and the actress says it was an “acting 101” for her.

Neha said, “It was acting 101 for me as my character, Lallo is so different from anything I have portrayed before. Lallo is from a small town in the India heartland, so I had to work hard on getting the local dialect and Hindi diction right. I also had to go through a makeover as I will be seen in a completely de-glam role. However, it was one of the most satisfying characters to play as Lallo is so unique and one of a kind.”

Produced by Zee Studios and directed by Indrajit Nattoji, ‘Aafat-E-Ishq’ is a dark dramedy with supernatural elements and a whodunnit twist.

It is the official remake of ‘Liza, the Fox-Fairy’, a Hungarian film that was a huge success internationally and won numerous awards at various film festivals.

Director Indrajit Nattoji said, “Aafat-E-Ishq is my Indian heartland version of ‘Liza, the Fox-Fairy’. I can safely say that ‘Aafat-E-Ishq’ is an adaptation and not a remake. A reboot with some new twists, eclectic original music, and quirky small-town Indian characters. I hope the film catches the audience’s imagination and succeeds in entertaining them, something we all need as we slowly emerge from a devastating pandemic.”

The film releases on ZEE5 on October 29.

Nisha Rawal on playing an insecure woman in ‘Meet’

Actress Nisha Rawal’s character of ‘Masum’ in the show ‘Meet’ has managed to stir a sense of excitement amongst the audience.

She revealed how she is enjoying learning how to portray the nuances of an insecure woman, who has had a lot to deal with in her life and feels that there’s much more to her character than what meets the eye. Being able to relate to ‘Masum’, Nisha is all the more pleased to be essaying the role.

Speaking about her character, Nisha says: “The last show I did 8 years back was with Shashi Sumeet Productions and my comeback on TV as an actor is also happening with the same production house. That makes ‘Meet’ even more special. I must mention that it has always been a wonderful experience working with them and I think that’s why in my journey so far, they have had a major role to play. Also, the character that I am playing is an antagonist, but I wouldn’t say that ‘Masum’ is a dreadful personality.”

The show presents the story of ‘Meet’ (Ashi Singh), who mirrors several women across the nation that are fighting societal norms of gender roles regarding work and responsibilities.

Nisha throws more light on her character, saying: “I think every person deals with their ups and downs in different ways and that’s why they react in certain ways in certain scenarios. ‘Masum’ is one such person who has had her share of insecurities and that keeps acting as a catalyst to making her appear as the villain. Of course, there are shades to every character, and I feel getting to play a role like this is quite amazing.”

‘Meet’ airs on Zee TV.

Q: Are you looking forward to on-ground fashion events and the energy that comes with physical shows and appearances?

A: I am I mean, I think that it’s been a while that we’ve all been at home and the livelihood of artisans, designers make-up artist, hairdressers has suffered. Everyone’s looking forward to being backed and last but not least me; there’s a different energy, of course.

Q: The outfit chosen for you at the show, how does it complement your style?

A: I really think that the outfit complimented my body type because it sort of showed off my arms which are very toned and strong. I’ve been working on them. So I’m happy that they chose, an off-shoulder outfit. The beautiful train, added length which I require a little bit off. So, I think it was very feminine, and I think the silhouette was a good one for me.

Q: What are your travel essentials?

A: Wetwipes, sanitiser, spare masks and water. I would say a book but I haven’t read a book since I’ve become a mother. I would say iPad, cotton wool for ears, and a lollipop.

Q: A book, a movie, the gym, or a night out. What is your perfect way to unwind?

A: If you really work out some point in the day, it just helps you to wind down. So I really believe in physical exercise. Well, I love massages and I really enjoy good conversations with good friends.

Q: How do you support sustainable fashion?

A: One should reuse their clothes. You don’t need to buy new clothes, all the time. We share clothes, among friends with similar body types, all the time, whether it’s children’s clothes as well as my clothes. Recycle, you know, if a pair of jeans have started to fray, cut them into shorts, you can also T-Shirts in a number of different ways. So you can recycle, use materials that are good for the planet, don’t use plastic and things like this.

Q: What is an experience in your life that you’re waiting to have?

A: A goodnight sleep will be great.

‘The Battle at Lake Changjin’ continues its victorious box-office march

Chinese patriotic war film ‘The Battle at Lake Changjin’ continues to rake it in, ending this past weekend with cumulative earnings of $769 million since it was released on September 30.

As a result, it has become the fourth top-grossing film in Chinese history, right behind the 3D computer-animation fantasy film ‘Ne Zha’. It is projected to settle down at No. 2, dislodging the 2021 comedy ‘Hi, Mom’, according to Variety.com. China is the world’s largest cinema theatre market.

Starring actor, director and martial arts exponent Wu Jing and actor and singer Jackson Yee, ‘Changjin’ is about the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, or Lake Changjin, during the Korean War (1950-53).

This fierce battle in freezing weather between the UN forces led by the US Army and the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army culminated in the complete withdrawal of all international forces from North Korea. Predictably, therefore, the film was announced as a part of the Communist Party of China’s 100th anniversary celebrations. More than 70,000 People’s Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers participated in it.

Forecasts from the Chinese ticketing agency Maoyan point to ‘Changjin’ reaching 5.43 billon renminbi (or $843 million at current exchange rates) over its lifetime. If it were to achieve that humungous total — and it’s highly likely — it would narrowly overtake ‘Hi, Mom’ for second place.

The biggest film of all time in China remains the 2017 war film ‘Wolf Warriors II’, which has earned $882 million. It chronicles the adventure of a loose-cannon Chinese soldier who goes to an Africa nation to protect medical aid workers from rebels and arms dealers.

Ajay Devgn on his Indian Ocean adventure with Bear Grylls

Bollywood star Ajay Devgn opens up on his trip to the Indian Ocean with Bear Grylls for the survival skill-based reality show ‘Into The Wild’. He says it was an adventure-packed journey and entirely a different experience from what he has done in his film career. The trip also worked as a short break for him.

Ajay says: “My September break to the Indian Ocean worked for me in many ways. It was my first trip ‘Into The Wild’ with Bear Grylls. I’ve done dangerous things in films from the start of my film career 30 years ago. But what I did during the ITW trip with Bear was altogether different. It was scary, thrilling, adventurous, exhilarating and so much more. It also worked as a short personal break.”

The world-famous adventurer Bear Grylls and Ajay Devgn travelled to sea full of sharks and facing harsh weather conditions, eventually moving towards uninhabited islands.

He shares his most difficult moments from the journey: “Well, there was so much nervous energy within me when I was doing my stunts with Bear, I can’t recollect each moment separately. Overall, I can tell you when I was in the middle of the deep ocean and Bear was trying to come in a helicopter to rescue me and take me to an island nearby, the waters were perilous. The wind of the chopper machine and the pressure of the water in which I was immersed neck deep was very dangerous. Of course, I had full faith in Bear but I must confess, I could barely keep my head above the water.”

Ajay adds that he loves forests but more challenging was the ocean: “I love the forests, so that bit was much easier. Bear knows his way around the wild, he is a natural. I just followed him, but it was the ocean that presented challenges.”

During the show we often see Grylls eating unique stuff on his expeditions. And what Ajay was offered by him and the Bollywood cop replies back: “Raw fish! I must confess, it wasn’t what I wished for. However, when you are in the wild, you have to survive. So, you eat what you are given.”

When asked why he accepted this offer, he says being a great fan of Bear, Ajay instantly said ‘yes’: “I took it up because I am a huge fan of Bear Grylls. He is a master adventurer; he is a great human being and a daredevil. I wanted to spend time in nature and who better than Bear as a companion.”

While opening up about his upcoming projects, he reveals: “I’m currently shooting for my home production ‘May Day’ that has Amitabh Bachchan and Rakul Preet Singh in the lead with me. I’m also directing this film. Besides this, I have ‘Maidaan’, a biopic on one of India’s football legends. I’m also making my foray into OTT with ‘Rudra – The Edge of Darkness’, in which I play the lead. Three other projects are being finalised. And, I have three very special appearances in S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, and Rohit Shetty’s ‘Sooryavanshi’.”.

‘Into The Wild’ with Bear Grylls and Ajay Devgn will stream on October 22 on discovery+. The broadcast premiere of the show is scheduled on October 25 on 14 linear channels including Discovery Channel.
