Sanya Malhotra joins forces with PETA India against elephant ‘joyrides’

The star of the Netflix black comedy ‘Pagglait’, Sanya Malhotra, is ready to turn heads all over again in a new World Elephant Day (August 12) campaign with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India.

Shot by ace photographer Taras Taraporvala, the ad features Malhotra with a ghastly ‘cut’ on her face seemingly made by an ‘ankus’ (a sharp-edged device used to control elephants), asking her fans to “try to relate” to the animal’s fate by never riding an elephant. Her hairstyling and make-up were done by Natasha Mathias.

“When I act on screen or dance, I do so because it brings me true joy. But the elephants used for ‘joyrides’ and performances don’t have a choice at all: they are beaten into submission and usually never get to see their families again,” Malhotra said.

Often when they’re just two years old, baby elephants are torn away from their mothers and either tied up between trees with heavy chains and ropes – causing painful burns – or confined to a cramped wooden enclosure called a ‘kraal’.

To break their spirits and force them to obey, trainers beat the young elephants with sticks and jab them with the ‘ankus’ – a weapon with a sharp metal hook on one end, such as the one shown in the ad featuring Malhotra.

Malhotra mostly appears in Hindi films and has had recent parts in ‘Shakuntala Devi’ and ‘Ludo’. Her upcoming film roles include ones in the romantic comedy ‘Meenakshi Sundareshwar’ and with Vikrant Massey and Bobby Deol in ‘Love Hostel’.

Netizens troll Kareena, Saif on rumours of naming son Jehangir

Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan’s second child is not even two years old, but his name has been dragged into an unseemly Twitter troll attack.

So much so, riding on the hate campaign, the hashtags #saifalikhan and #aurangzeb are trending on the social media platform.

The world knew that the child had been named ‘Jeh’ — his maternal grandfather Randhir Kapoor, in fact, had also referred to him as ‘Jeh’ when someone asked him for his name in response to the Bollywood veteran’s recent tweet that he was visiting his grandchild.

But then, reports started circulating that Kareena and Saif’s second son was named Jehangir — and that made the troll army see red.

The couple had named their first son Taimur after he was born in 2014 and then, too, they were greeted with negativity.

Those circulating the information that Kareena and Saif’s second child is named Jehangir quoted from Kareena’s just-released book, ‘Pregnancy Bible: The Ultimate Manuel for Moms-to-be’ (Juggernaut), where she’s said to have captioned Jeh’s pictures as ‘Jehangir’.

The book’s publisher, Chiki Sarkar, denied that Kareena had ever mentioned the name ‘Jehangir’. Said Sarkar: “In my capacity, I can say that she has always called him Jeh, her office calls him Jeh and in the book also she has called him Jeh.”

The troll army, however, did not wait for any clarification and seized upon the rumour to start its hate campaign.

One Twitter user wrote: “Taimur and Jehangir are not just a name it’s a slap on the face of Hindus. They could also keep the name of their children as Kalam or Irfan … Hindus and others beware of these Islamist radicals, or propaganda spreaders. #SaifAliKhan #KareenaKapoorKhan #Hindus.”

Another user wrote: “Taimur first & now Jehangir doesn’t surprise me anymore. Remember after the box-office success of ‘Tanhaji’ the actor said that ‘Tanhaji’ story is a fictional story. It is shameful after insulting Maratha & Maharashtra pride he is still living & earning in Mumbai. #SaifAliKhan”

In a recent Instagram Live with filmmaker Karan Johar, when asked about the name of her son, Kareena announced it was ‘Jeh Ali Khan’.

The big question is: Why are the trolls getting worked up when the mother and grandfather are calling the little one ‘Jeh’? Ask the rumour mongers.

Actor-author Tisca Chopra proud to be related to Khushwant Singh

Actress Tisca Chopra is also an author and an avid reader. The actor-author hails from the family of late celebrated author Khushwant Singh. Carrying forward the lineage, she has penned two books ‘Acting Smart’ and ‘What’s Up With Me?’.

The actress recalls the time spent with the illustrious author for the last time at his home in Delhi. Tisca told in an interview: “When I met him for the last time many years ago, I remember we had gone to the Sujan Singh Park house where he lived, there were mountains of books, like tall towers of books in his house. I asked him, ‘Have you read all of these?’ He said, ‘100 saal ka saamaan aur kal ki khabar nahi’. He meant the books but I think it applies to everything.”

She added proudly: “I am very proud to be related to him and that I have in some very tiny miniscule way managed to continue writing.”

Tisca reflects on her favourite books by the renowned Indian writer. “My favourite Khushwant Singh book is ‘Delhi: A Novel’ because I love the relationship between Bhaagamati and the protagonist which I think is autobiographical. The Delhi one is familiar with the history of Delhi and the way it has been interwoven with the interplay of characters, it’s something that stays with you, so poetic is the prose. I also like ‘A History of the Sikhs’, being half Sikh myself,” she told IANS.

She shared that her life is inspired by Khushwant Singh’s writing in a major way.

“Khushwant Singh is a writer, whom I have been a fan of for very many years. His writing has a fluidity which we can only aspire to. He lived so fully and had such rich experiences,” said Tisca.

Tisca’s recent book ‘What’s Up With Me?’ has garnered a lot of interest among young readers.

She said: “The response to the book has been phenomenal. It has generated a lot of interest within families which to me is the biggest success of the book. Young girls, who are the intended readers of the book, have picked it up, started reading it and are discussing it with their friends. Mothers-daughters and fathers-daughters are getting together in small groups to read the book and discuss it.”

Tisca’s book talks about teenage girl issues like puberty, periods and teenage emotions. She told in an interview: “So many mothers have reached out and said they’ve found the book useful because it’s a difficult conversation for them to have. But, for them ‘What’s Up With Me?’ becomes a launch pad to have a deeper conversation based on the way the families want to process puberty with their child.”

Sonu Sood lends helping hand for treatment of baby girl

A “severely” malnourished two-and-a-half year old girl, suffering from old burns and anemia, was cured successfully by Ankura Hospitals in association with Sood Charity Foundation.

Dr Srinidhi, Medical Director at Ankura Hospitals, LB Nagar, said, Afeefa Maryum was admitted to hospital last month with chronic non healing wound with intermittent bleeding and severe anemia with malnutrition.

A year ago hot oil accidentally fell over her left temporo – parietal region, left hand, nape of neck and upper back of trunk. She was immediately taken to a local hospital where collagen was applied and was discharged within a week.

Post discharge, the child developed scalds over left side of scalp area and was again admitted in the same hospital when collagen was applied over left side scalp and nape of neck, for the second time. The child didn’t receive sufficient diet and nutrients leading to malnourishment.

“As the parents had no money for further treatment, they contacted actor Sonu Sood, who recommended Ankura Hospitals for treatment. When the child was admitted at Ankura for further evaluation and management, the situation was critical and challenging due to the low weight and given her medical condition,” the doctor said.

He said that the 24/7 expert nursing care and specialist doctor team services led by Dr Hari Kiran was rendered to the baby as the initial few weeks were crucial for nutrition, maturation of lungs and brain and for establishing feeds.

“Four weeks of special care by the entire medical team along with access to the advanced equipment, standardized treatment protocols, key medical intervention and procedure helped the baby to survive,” he added.

“Nothing brings me more joy than saving a life. I have worked with Ankura Hospital in the past. During the pandemic, I have referred some critical cases in gynaecology and paediatrics to them and they showed remarkable results…It strengthened my belief and resolve to become more seriously involved with such a healthcare brand that practices what it preaches,” said Sonu Sood, Chairperson Sood Charity Foundation.
