On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Sri Aurobindo and the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence, Doordarshan will premiere the films ‘The Transformation’ in English and ‘Naya Janma’ in Hindi on August 14 and 15, respectively. The film is about 54 minutes long.

‘The Transformation’ (‘Naya Janma’ in Hindi) traces the life of Sri Aurobindo from 1908 to 1909, a turning point in his spiritual evolution. The Alipore Bomb Case trial, which took place from May 1908 to May 1909, is an event of historical significance during which the British government arrested Sri Aurobindo, then a prominent nationalist leader known by his previous name, Aurobindo Ghose, his brother Barindra Ghose, and a number of young revolutionaries.

They were charged with “conspiracy” or “waging war against the King” — the equivalent of high treason and punishable with death by hanging.

This documentary highlights landmark events that took place during this period. The film has shots of the actual locations in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, where the bomb blast took place and for which Khudiram Bose was hanged. It covers the railway station where Bose’s associate, Prafulla Chaki, shot himself before being caught and the hill where Barindra Ghose and his associates tested the bomb.

The film also includes shots of the Alipore Jail in Kolkata where Sri Aurobindo was kept in solitary confinement and the Uttarpara Jaykrishna Public Library in West Bengal, where Sri Aurobindo for the first time revealed publicly his Yoga and his spiritual experiences. Rare newspapers from the British Library and the National Library with actual writings from Sri Aurobindo form the basis of this film.

Filmed with multiple cameras, ‘The Transformation’ (‘Naya Janma’) has been directed by Abhijit Dasgupta, the recipient of more than 30 national and international documentary film awards. The music is by Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar and Anup Mukherjee supervised the sound design. The editor of the film is Satyendra Mohanty.

The Pandava song in the film has been rendered by ‘Chota Teejan’ Sima Ghosh and a song dating back to 1910 has been recreated by Sohini Roy Chowdhury.

In the courtroom enactments, Cyrus Madan plays the prosecuting counsel Yeardley Norton’s role. Pradip Mitra is Additional Sessions Judge Charles Beachcroft and Ashoke Viswanathan appears as Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, then a young barrister.

The film has been produced by the Sri Aurobindo Society and the Kolkata Sukriti Foundation.

Bhagyashree gets reminded of Salman from ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ on reality show

0

Veteran actress Bhagyashree went down memory lane and remembered her ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ days on the sets of the reality show ‘DID Super Moms’.

The performance by contestants Anila and Shweta on the title track of ‘Dangal’ left everyone stunned. In fact, the act somehow even reminded Bhagyashree of her co-star Salman Khan and made her reminisce about her shoot days with the Bollywood Superstar.

As Bhagyashree mentions, “I believe the concept that you depicted today is an issue that various women in our country go through every now and then. Women are generally told to take care of just their household chores after marriage and they are not encouraged to follow their dreams. But women like you prove that one can achieve anything one wants, with their hard work and determination. Anila, I must add that whenever I watch your performance, I always wonder how you do it. You must teach this to me!”

She added: “I noticed one more thing in your performance today, that you flawlessly imitated Salman Khan in the act.”

Released in 1989, ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ is a romantic musical film directed by Sooraj Barjatya. ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ is considered one of the most iconic romantic films ever made and became a cult favorite of its songs, dialogues, and chemistry of Salman and Bhagyashree.

She added: “In fact, there was one jump that I found really interesting because that move was exactly like the scene from our film ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, where Salman is exercising, and with him being upset with me during the sequence, he jumps right back up.”

“You did a similar move and that one movement reminded me of that scene from the film and made me nostalgic.”

‘Darlings’ director Jasmeen K. Reen has praised Alia Bhatt and said that her relationship with the actress-producer evolved as they progressed.

‘Darlings’ stars Alia, Shefali Shah, Vijay Verma, and Roshan Mathew. Jasmeet still remembers how it all began with just a narration.

She said: “All of this began with narration, I narrated the script, Alia liked it, read it too. Then after she agreed to play Badru, we started jamming. Before we knew it, we were jamming creatively, the bond was seamless, respectful, and most important – the relationship had trust.”

‘Darlings’ is a dark comedy that explores the lives of a mother-daughter duo trying to find their place in Mumbai seeking courage and love in exceptional circumstances while fighting against all odds.

Seeing Alia play the role of Badrunissa Shaikh was a dream come true as Jasmeet couldn’t imagine anyone else playing Badru.

Jasmine said: “Alia is a director’s actor. She is true to the film, and the character, nothing else matters. My working relationship with Alia evolved as we progressed.”

When asked if she preferred Alia as an actor or producer, Jasmeet said: “Both. Alia the actor always, I have to say, Alia has the quality of encouraging and empowering a director’s vision. That, to me, makes a fabulous producer.”
