Board was not prepared for Virat Kohli’s decision to left captain
Sourav Ganguly, the former president of the Board Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has stated that the board was not prepared for Virat Kohli‘s decision to left captain of the Indian Test cricket team.
Ganguly mentioned that it was Kohli’s personal decisi-on, and only the cricketer himself can provide the reasons behind his choice to relinquish the captaincy in the longest format of the game.
Ganguly’s comments come in response to calls from fans for Kohli to be reinstated as the Test captain following India’s defeat to Australia in the World Test Championship final, led by Rohit Sharma. However, Kohli has struggled with his batting performance in Test cricket over the past three years.
The BCCI was taken by surprise when Kohli made the decision to step down as Test captain after the South Africa tour. Ganguly believes that it is now irrelevant to discuss the matter since Kohli has already left the captaincy role. The selectors had to appoint a new captain for the Indian team, and Rohit Sharma was considered the best option at that time, according to Ganguly.
During his tenure as captain, Kohli achieved the fourth-highest number of victories in Test matches among all captains in history, with 40 wins and 11 draws in 68 matches. He is ranked below Graeme Smith, Ricky Ponting, and Steve Waugh in terms of Test wins as a captain.
