The CEO of OpenAI meets with Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed the vast potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in advancing India’s technology ecosystem, particularly among the youth, following a meeting with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

The Prime Minister welcomed collaborations that could accelerate India’s digital transformation and empower its citizens. Altman, after meeting PM Modi and addressing students at the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi, described their conversation as great and discussed India’s remarkable tech ecosystem and how the country can benefit from AI.

Altman clarified that OpenAI is not currently training GPT5, the successor to GPT4, and emphasized the need for safety audits and further work before the next iteration. These remarks come amid concerns among AI researchers and tech executives regarding the rapid development of AI technology.

In March, a group of entrepreneurs and researchers called for a pause on training AI systems more powerful than GPT-4, while Altman later clarified that GPT-5 training had not begun and wouldn’t for some time.

Altman also acknowledged the potential risks associated with generative AI technology during a US Senate hearing, suggesting the need for government regulation as AI continues to gain power.
