India plans to create 100 semiconductor design startups

Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, announced at the ‘Semicon India’ event that India plans to create 100 semiconductor design startups that will create innovative designs and solutions for both domestic and global markets.

He stated that the country is set to have a skilled workforce of 85,000 professionals in the semiconductor field. The minister mentioned that India has created opportunities in manufacturing and design in the past 14 months, and a new curriculum will produce a talented workforce that will contribute to the global digital and tech space.

He expressed confidence that India will be a significant player in this field in the coming years. The President and CEO of Renesas Electronics, Hidetoshi Shibata, spoke at the ‘Semicon India event, stating that India is a crucial component of the company’s global business, and there are many prospects for partnerships in the semiconductor industry.

The Indian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has allocated a budget of Rs 1,200 crore to invest in semiconductor design startups. Moreover, the country recently introduced a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme worth Rs 76,000 crore to encourage the development of semiconductor and display manufacturing units in India.
