PM Modi holds meeting with senior cabinet ministers

To discuss government strategy in the parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday held a meeting with senior cabinet ministers. Sources said that union ministers Rajnath Singh, Nirmala Sitharaman, Nitin Gadkari, Kiren Rijiju and Pralhad Joshi attended the meeting which was held before the start of parliament proceedings.

It is learnt that the Prime Minister discussed ongoing protest by the opposition parties over suspension of 12 Rajya Sabha members and other issues in both houses of Parliament. The opposition also continues to raise its voices on price rise, unemployment and extended jurisdiction of the Border Security Force (BSF) in some States.

The opposition parties are also demanding a law guaranteeing minimum support price (MSP).

Sources said that in the meeting the Prime Minister discussed in detail with his cabinet colleagues about the issues on which continuous disruptions are caused by the opposition members.

On Tuesday, opposition members in both the houses staged a walkout over suspension of 12 members of the Upper House. The opposition is in no mood to budge and the face-off continued on Wednesday, too. Opposition members resorted to sloganeering on the issue of suspension of the 12 MPs.

The opposition parties also staged a protest in front of the Gandhi statue inside the Parliament complex against the suspension.

On Monday, the Rajya Sabha suspended 12 MPs for the entire winter session of Parliament for creating ruckus in the house during the monsoon session on August 11. The suspended MPs are from the Congress, Trinamool Congress, CPI, CPI-M and Shiv Sena.

On Tuesday, Rajya Sabha chairman M. Venkiah Naidu rejected the appeal to consider revoking the suspension. Naidu said, “I am not considering the appeal of Leader of opposition Mallikarjun Kharge to revoke suspension of 12 MPs since no suspended MPs have apologised but are justifying their acts.”

No UPA left, Opposition must unite to fight BJP: Mamata

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said that no UPA is left now and all the like-minded Opposition parties must unitedly fight the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

At her much-anticipated meeting with Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar, Banerjee discussed the strategy for all Opposition parties to take on the BJP unitedly in the next elections.

Pawar, who met Banerjee along with his senior party leaders, said that they held a long discussion on various political issues.

“We agreed upon the need to strengthen the collective efforts and commitment towards safeguarding democratic values and ensuring the betterment of the people,” he said.

The meeting was the prime political highlight of Banerjee’s two-day Mumbai trip when Shiv Sena leaders, MP Sanjay Raut and Tourism Minister Aditya Thackeray called on her.

However, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray could not meet her as he is currently convalescing after a spine surgery last month.

Pinarayi Vijayan the ‘final word’ in Kerala’s development?

It is now becoming more and more clear that in Kerala it’s not what is being done, but about who does it and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is now the “last word” when it comes to taking the state to “new heights” through major infrastructure projects.

In other words, it means when the CPI-M is in office, every project that they undertake is “good” for the state, but if the same project is taken up by the Congress, it “doesn’t benefit” the state, but only “those” who float it, is the “campaign” of the Left.

Ask two time former Congress Chief Minister Oommen Chandy about the development vision of the CPI-M and pat comes the answer, ” When I was the Finance Minister during 1991 in the K. Karunakaran cabinet, we tried to implement computerisation in a state-run financial agency, it was utter chaos and the CPI-M stood against it and broke everything that came in front of them. Today, Vijayan carries two laptops with him and this is their vision for development, which is, if they do, it’s good and when objections are raised, those who raise it are termed anti-nationals.”

Chandy during his first term just before it ended in 2006, got another taste of the “vision” of the CPI-M, when even after getting the green signal from the court to go ahead with the inking of the Kochi Smart City project with the UAE based Smart City, it decided to shelve it after fierce opposition from the CPI-M.

Soon recession set in and the IT scenario suffered reversals and, finally when the infrastructure was ready a decade later, when Chandy again was at the helm, the CPI-M used it as one of the election campaign issues and today no one speaks of it, though it has started to function.

Chandy says projects like the GAIL pipeline was “stalled” by the Left when he tried to take it forward, however after Vijayan took over in 2016, the project got “wings” and now Vijayan claims it as one of “their” achievements.

“But nothing is being heard on another major infrastructure project- Vizhinjam Container Terminal, as it has now gone beyond all deadlines, but Vijayan even now blames it on the Ockhi waves that lashed the proposed port four years back,” Chandy asserts.

Now the “buzz” word for Vijayan in infrastructure development is the proposed Silverline-K-Rail project, costing over Rs 60,000 crores, which if completed will set up a 529.45 km corridor connecting Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod.

And on Tuesday, Vijayan was at his “best” and spoke “non-stop” for over an hour in front of the Kerala Governor’s official residence. He blamed the Centre and the Congress led Opposition for stalling it and gave minute details, which was more of a point by point rejoinder to Metroman E. Sreedharan, who last week said that the proposed K-Rail (Silver Line) project, as conceived, is totally “against” the interests of the state and termed it as an “idiotic” proposal.

Sreedharan using his vast experience in engineering said that this project would be the equivalent of a China Wall which will “divide” Kerala from North to South and cause “untold damage” to the environment.

But Vijayan using his vast political experience, (though not naming Sreedharan) dismissed the findings as it’s the perfect one, which will “not cause” any ecological or environment damage and instead when completed it will “propel” Kerala to new “realms of development”.

Vijayan said through this one can travel from the northern tip of the state to the southern tip in four hours. One should recall an Express highway project connecting the same places that was mooted in 2001, when A.K. Antony was the Chief Minister, which met with stiff resistance from the then Leader of Opposition and Communist veteran V.S. Achuthanandan.

Vijayan, who is determined to see the project takes off, has said that he will soon meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this project. At the same time both the Congress led UDF and the BJP led NDA are equally determined that this project will be the death knell for the state and they will see to it that this does not take off.

A media critic, on condition of anonymity, said, “While the CPI-M led Left when in power has the wherewithal to see they will put into practise what they want, unlike the Congress led UDF, which does not have the political acumen nor the will to go forward with projects, which they feel will benefit the state, fearing the Left’s campaign.”

“The machinery of the Left is the best and once their party gives the green signal to do anything, right from the grassroots to their topmost leaders speak in one voice and will do anything to convince the common man. While in the Congress, their leaders speak in different tones and hence they are unable to convince the people, even if the projects are good. The Congressmen should learn to remain united for a good cause, but unfortunately they have not been able to do it so far,” said the critic.

Odisha CM announces social security benefits for newspaper hawkers

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday announced social security benefits for the newspaper hawkers in the state.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), all the newspaper hawkers registered with the Odisha unorganised workers welfare board will get the social security assistance. The next to kin of a newspaper hawker will get an assistance of Rs 2 lakh in case of accidental death while Rs 1 lakh will be provided for natural death.

Newspaper hawkers who become completely disabled due to an accident will get Rs 1.5 lakh while Rs 80,000 will be provided in case of loss of both limbs and Rs 40,000 to those who lose one limb, the statement said.

The Chief Minister also announced special assistance of Rs 3,000 in two phases to all registered newspaper hawkers in view of the Covid-19 situation.

The assistance will be paid from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

The government has also decided to construct work-sheds for the hawkers at the district level. Patnaik has directed the Information and Public Relations department to prepare a digital database of hawkers and provide them identity cards.

The announcement was made acknowledging the important role played by the newspaper hawkers in the dissemination of information among the public, the CMO said.

Dilip Ghosh’s comment on Mamata triggers controversy

After Trinamool Congress decided not to attend the meeting of the opposition parties called by Mallikarjun Kharge of the Congress before the winter session of the Parliament, Dilip Ghosh’s comment on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee triggered a controversy.

Ghosh said, “Mamata Banerjee is trying to become the leader. The days of Sonia Gandhi are over”.

He went on to say, “Let them decide who will stay with whom. BJP has no interest in this. This is a drama by the opposition”.

“Who will call the meeting — Congress or Trinamool Congress? Which is the main party – the session will be over before they come to any decision,” Ghosh added.

Ghosh’s comment met with serious criticism both from the Congress and Trinamool Congress. Senior MP Sougata Roy said, “We had an important meeting in Kolkata and so we had to come back. We will have to stay there. It is insignificant to make any comment on the observation of Dilip Ghosh. Let them think over their defeat in the assembly elections without spending time on unnecessary things”.

Congress leader Pradip Bhattacharya said, “The problem with these people is that they don’t know the history of Indian parliamentary politics. When BJP was in the opposition they also called for the meeting of the opposition. Now Congress has called it. This is parliamentary protocol. He is trying to deny that”.

Meanwhile Congress leader in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury without naming Trinamool Congress said, “There are some opposition parties who pose to be opposition but in reality, they are with the ruling party. Whenever there is a clash with the government they back out. Congress never behaves in this way”.

Hitting back at Chowdhury, Derek O’Brien wrote in his tweet: “Yes there will be Opposition unity in #Parliament. Common ISSUES will unite the Opposition. RJD, DMK, CPI-M are all electoral allies of Congress. NCP, Shiv Sena, JMM run a government with them. Congress is not our electoral ally nor are we running a government with them. That’s the distinction”.

RS suspends 12 oppn MPs for monsoon session ruckus

The Rajya Sabha on Monday suspended 12 MPs for the entire winter session of parliament for creating ruckus in the house during monsoon session of the parliament on August 11.

The suspended MPs are from Congress, Trinamool Congress, CPI, CPI-M and Shiv Sena.

The members are — Syed Naseer Hussain, Akhilesh Prasad Singh, Phulo Devi Netam, Chhaya Verma, Ripun Bora and Rajmani Patel of the Congress; Priyanka Chaturvedi, Anil Desai of the Shiv Sena; Elamaram Kareem of the CPI-M, Binoy Viswam of the CPI, Dola Sen and Shanta Chhetri of the Trinamool.

The suspension of the members could be a new flash point between opposition members and the government in the winter session of the parliament which began on Monday. In the morning, the Rajya Sabha chairman indicated that he is unhappy over the affairs of the house in the previous session.

Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu Stated that disruptions and unruly conduct of some members during the last monsoon session continue to haunt all. He urged the members to draw right lessons from it as all sections of the house and the country ended up as losers from the derailed monsoon session.

Naidu referred to the turn of events during the closing moments of the last monsoon session and noted that responses of the leading lights of the house and all concerned were not up to his expectations.

Referring to the highs and lows witnessed during the last 11 sessions presided by him over the last four years, the Rajya Sabha Chairman urged the members to create “democratic and parliamentary space” in the House so that all issues can be taken up.

Former MLA Manibhai Vaghela quits Congress

Former Congress legislator from Vadgam constituency in Gujarat, Manibhai Vaghela, quit the Indian National Congress (INC) on Saturday.

In his resignation letter addressed to party president Sonia Gandhi, Vaghela expressed displeasure with the Congress’ working style, ideology and “disregard” towards the junior workers.

He also showed displeasure over the former party president Rahul Gandhi’s “incompetency” and “immature decisions”.

Vaghela, a former member of legislative assembly (MLA) from Vadgam constituency quit from all posts in the Congress party on Saturday.

In his resignation letter, Vaghela said the Congress had promised to let him contest from Vadgam (a Scheduled Caste reserved) seat.

However, the party did not keep its promise and supported an Independent candidate (Jignesh Mevani) in the state assembly election of 2017.

“Despite that, I made all efforts to help Jignesh Mevani win the elections, going along with the party,” Vaghela wrote in his letter.

“Being a Dalit, I am also capable of voicing my community’s issues. I too have the ability to emerge as a Dalit Neta by giving fiery provocative speeches. However, as per my ideology, the party should not be for any particular cast or community. The party can only be strengthened by supporting all the classes of the society and by adopting a conciliatory approach.

“The efforts are made to harm the self-esteem of old and experienced leaders of the party in Gujarat by giving entries and encouragement the so-called Dalit leaders who generate ill-will among the communities,” Vaghela said.

In 2012 assembly elections, he defeated a cabinet minister of the then Narendra Modi-led Gujarat government, winning the Vadgam seat.

Tripura polls: Kapil Sibal tells SC ‘There is complete mayhem, no CAPF’

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal on Friday sought Supreme Court’s immediate intervention in connection with Tripura municipal election, claiming that violence in the state is continuing.

Sibal mentioned the matter before a bench headed by Justice D. Y. Chandrachud. He submitted that news reports are claiming that the top court’s order, to conduct free and fair election in Tripura, has been violated. He added, “Candidates were not allowed to enter the booths! No 2 constables, no 2 battalions of CAPF were provided! There is complete mayhem! Please take this up in the afternoon today! What has transpired is horrendous! We have photos of people on the ground showing that the SC order was not followed”.

Sibal emphasised that it is a very serious matter and urged the top court to hear the matter either on Friday or Saturday. Justice Chandrachud said that the bench has a very tight schedule today. He added, “Let me look at it over lunch and discuss with my brothers since the bench composition was also different”.

The top court on Thursday directed the Centre to deploy two additional companies of central paramilitary forces in Tripura as expeditiously as possible for municipal elections being held in the day.

A bench comprising Justices D.Y. Chandrachud, Surya Kant, and Vikram Nath said: “We direct the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to provide additional two companies of any CAPF as expeditiously as possible having due regard to the fact that polling has already commenced and in order to secure the polling booths so that polling can take place without any disturbance or dislocation.”

The top court was hearing a contempt plea by the Trinamool Congress and others claiming that the law-and-order situation is worsening in the state, as the date for local body elections draws closer and the government authorities have not followed the top court’s direction on security arrangements.

PM to launch BJP’s campaign for U’khand assembly polls in Dec

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the BJP’s campaign for the Uttarakhand assembly polls in December. The polls will be held in February-March next year alongwith Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Manipur and Goa.

It is learnt that the Prime Minister will kick-off the election campaign in the first week of December for which the date is yet to be finalised. “Prime Minister Modi will kick-off the BJP’s campaign in December for which the date is yet to finalised. Everything will be in place in the next couple of days,” a party leader said.

On the second day of his visit to the state, Union Minister and BJP election in-charge for Uttarakhand Pralhad Joshi on Thursday held a meeting of the party’s resources and manifesto, special contact programme committee of the ‘election management committee’ to discuss the poll preparations.

“Joshi reviewed poll preparations and discussed upcoming programmes. He expressed satisfaction over the state unit’s preparations and advised that we must stay connected with the people on the ground,” an Uttarakhand BJP leader said.

Joshi also chaired core group meetings in Chamoli, Rudraprayag and Pauri districts of Uttarakhand. “Joshi asked the party leaders to work to ensure the BJP wins in the next assembly polls by taking the welfare schemes of the double engine governments at the Centre and the state to the people,” a party leader said.

Earlier this month on November 5, the Prime Minister visited Uttarakhand. He inaugurated and laid the foundation stones of multiple key infrastructure projects in Kedarnath. Modi also reviewed and inspected the execution of the ongoing infrastructure work in the state. “We are fully prepared for the Assembly elections in Uttarakhand. We all are working on the grassroots level in the state. People will extend their support to the BJP in the state.”

Recently, BJP chief J P Nadda was on a two-day visit to Uttarakhand to review the party’s poll preparedness. Nadda held several organisational meetings to take stock of the ground situation. In August, Nadda had visited the hill state to see the BJP poll preparedness and attended around a dozen meetings.

Last month, Union home minister Amit Shah visited Uttarakhand and addressed a rally in Dehradun. Shah also reviewed the preparations at a meeting at the party state unit headquarters in Dehradun. During his visit, Shah also inaugurated the Mukhyamantri Ghasiyari Kalyan Yojana of the Uttarakhand government.
