Amit Shah meets power and coal ministers, reviews situation

Amid reports of shortage of coal supplies, Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday met Union Power Minister R.K. Singh and Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi to review the situation.

In the meeting, senior officials of ministries and NTPC were also present. Sources said that the meeting lasted for an hour and Shah reviewed the situation and asked everyone present in the meeting to ensure adequate supplies of coal to thermal power plants across the country.

The coal ministry reassured that ample coal is available in the country to meet the demand of power plants.

“Any fear of disruption in power supply is entirely misplaced. The coal stock at the power plant end is about 72 lakh tonnes, sufficient for 4 days requirement, and that the Coal India Limited (CIL) end is more than 400 lakh tonnes, which is being supplied to the power plants,” in a statement the coal ministry had said Sunday.

on Sunday, union power minister Singh also reviewed the coal stock position in all thermal power plants including those plants which are supplying power to distribution companies of Delhi.

“Yesterday on October 9, the total despatch of coal from all sources (Coal India Limited, Singareni Collieries Company, Captive Coal Mines and imported coal) was 1.92 million tonnes while the total consumption was 1.87 million tonnes. Thus, the coal despatch has exceeded the consumption, thereby indicating a shift to gradual building up of coal stock,” the power ministry had said in a statement.

The power ministry had further stated that the coal ministry and Coal India have assured that there is ample coal available in the country to meet the demand of power plants.

“Any fear of disruption in power supply is entirely misplaced. The coal stock at power plant is sufficient for more than 4 days’ requirement and as the coal supply is being ramped up by CIL, the coal stock at power plant would gradually improve,” the power ministry had added.

Last week, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned about a possible power crisis due to short supplies of coal to plants.

PM Modi launches Indian Space Association

Launching the Indian Space Association (ISpA) on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his government ensured that space technology became the delivery tool for leakage-free and transparent governance during the last seven years.

“Our vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ is a well-thought, well-planned integrated economic strategy that is based on technological innovations and will ensure that India becomes a hub for it as well as plays an important role in the global development…. And therefore, the regulatory environment that we have been enabling has given priority to ensure the interest of both the country and the stakeholders,” Modi added while addressing the launch event virtually.

He cited examples of the use of geo-tagging of housing units for the poor, roads and other infrastructure projects, how development projects are being monitored by satellite imaging or even how space technology is being used in settlement of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojna (crop insurance) claims.

Stating that the Union government’s approach to space reforms is based on four pillars, The Prime Minister listed those as: “the freedom of innovation to the private sector; the role of the government as an enabler; preparing youth for the future and to see the space sector as a resource for progress of the common man.”

For India, the space sector is a major medium for the progress of 130 crore countrymen, Modi said and observed that for India, “the space sector means better mapping, imaging and connectivity facilities for the common man. Also the space sector means better speed from shipment to delivery for entrepreneurs, this also means better security and income for fishermen and better forecast of natural calamity.”

Considered as the premier industry association of space and satellite companies, ISpA aspires to be the collective voice of the Indian space industry. It will undertake policy advocacy and engage with all stakeholders in the Indian space domain, including the government and its agencies. ISpA will help in making India self-reliant, technologically advanced and a leading player in the space arena.

The ISpA is represented by leading homegrown and global corporations with advanced capabilities in space and satellite technologies. Its founding members include Larson & Toubro, Nelco (Tata Group), OneWeb, Bharti Airtel, Mapmyindia, Walchandnagar Industries and Ananth Technology Limited. Other core members include Godrej, Hughes India, Azista-BST Aerospace Private Limited, BEL, Centum Electronics and Maxar India. The Prime Minister also interacted with representatives of the space industry on the occasion.

Modi said the government is moving ahead with a clear policy regarding public sector enterprises and is opening most of these sectors to private enterprises where the government is not required. The decision regarding Air India shows our commitment and seriousness, he added.

He spoke about how the SpaceComm and Remote Sensing policies are being finalised with inputs from all stakeholders.

“The greed to rule space divided countries in the 20th century but in the 21st century, India will have to ensure that space will unite the world,” he concluded.

Kamal Haasan urges Centre, TN govt to prevent power outages

With the shortage of coal leading to power cuts in various states, the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) leader and Superstar, Kamal Haasan has urged the Central and the state government to ensure that there is no power cut in Tamil Nadu.

In a statement on Sunday, the actor-turned-politician said both Central and the state government must work together to make sure that there was no shortage of coal in Tamil Nadu.

Kamal Haasan expressed concerns over reports that the state has coal reserves only for four days, adding that there is still coal storage for 14 days.

The actor-turned-politician urged the DMK government to take up the matter with the Central government as industrialists in the state have already expressed concern about the possibilities of power cuts in the days to come if the coal supply is not maintained properly.

Under the previous DMK government from 2006-2011 there were unprecedented power cuts leading to several industries in the state shifting base to other states. The government must remain alert that such things do not recur in the state, Haasan added.

The MNM Chief said the industrial towns of Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Sivakasi had faced innumerable difficulties during the 2006-11 period due to power cuts and said common people faced the brunt of this as jobs were lost following industries shifting base.

The state government must coordinate properly with the Central government to maintain a steady flow of coal and to remain alert about its depletion, Haasan added.

The economy of the state was slowly recovering, adding that if power cuts are again witnessed, the state would face a huge loss.

Man dragged on road for showing black flag to Nishad Party chief in UP

A youth was beaten up for protesting against Sanjay Nishad, president of Nishad Party and showing a black flag.

Sanjay Nishad was in Deoria on Sunday to attend a welcome programme after being elected member of the legislative council, when a youth named Mahindra Nishad began shouting slogans and showing a black flag.

Workers of the Nishad Party immediately pounced upon the youth and beat him up.

The video of this entire incident went viral on social media.

Mahindra was dragged through the market and forced to sit in a car. After some time, he was handed over to the police.

However, the police let him go because no complaint had been lodged against him.

Sanjay Nishad blamed the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party for the incident and claimed that the youth had been instigated by them.

The youth was demanding inclusion of the Nishad community in the Scheduled Caste category — a demand that Sanjay Nishad has also been raising.

“There is no problem. The young man has been misled. He belongs to my community and I will hug him and forgive him,” he said.

The Telangana Legislature on Friday passed a resolution urging the Central government to conduct a caste wise census of backward classes while holding general census for 2021.

Both houses of the state legislature passed the resolution unanimously.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, who moved the resolution in the Assembly, said that in view of the uplift of poorer sections of the society, it was necessary to maintain accurate statistics for taking up various welfare measures for benefiting poorest of the poor.

The Legislative Council also unanimously adopted government resolution demanding the Central government to take up caste-wise census for backward classes in 2021.

The resolution was passed three days after the Chief Minister gave an assurance in the Assembly. He had urged the Centre to enhance the reservation quota of Scheduled Castes and also undertake caste census.

Rao had accepted the suggestion of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Akbaruddin Owaisi for caste census and wondered why the Centre was not coming forward to undertake this.

“All kinds of nonsense is spoken in the absence of statistics. Unless you have the facts and figures, you can’t make the proper plans for upliftment of any section,” he had said.

Order probe into Lakhimpur Kheri violence by sitting judge: Priyanka

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday demanded a probe by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court or a high court into the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

She also said that Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni, whose son is among those booked, should resign to ensure an impartial probe.

“In my view and that of the victims’ families as well, the case should be probed by a sitting Supreme Court or high court judge, and not the retired judge,” she said.

The state government, on Thursday, had appointed retired high court judge Pradeep Srivastava to probe the Lakhimpur violence.

Priyanka Gandhi visited a temple on the first day of Navratri and said that she was fasting. She said that she had prayed for the welfare of all.

Meanwhile, as she left for Bahraich on Thursday to meet the family of another deceased farmer, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party MP Satish Chandra Mishra made their way to Lakhimpur to meet the families of those who had lost their lives in Sunday’s violence.

Akhilesh Yadav questioned the delay in the arrest of Ashish Mishra, son of Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni and said that it was futile to expect any justice from the BJP government.

BKU spokesperson, Rakesh Tikait, while talking to reporters in Rampur, said that if Ashish Mishra was not arrested by October 12, when the post death rituals of the deceased persons will take place, the BKU would launch a massive agitation.
