Jagan raised expectations but has failed to deliver: TDP

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) supremo and former Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday slammed Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, saying that he raised a lot of expectations before coming to power but has not delivered on anything.

“The CM raised a whole lot of expectations with his countless promises before the elections but now he was leading the people to the cremation grounds,” said Naidu.

He lamented that people in the state are reeling under the rising prices of sand, liquor, cement and other items.

“People gave a massive victory to the YSRCP thinking that CM Jagan would work miracles to uplift their living standards. But now, what this Chief Minister ushered in was universal corruption and punishment to people through hikes in current (power) charges, RTC fares, diesel prices etc..,” he noted.

On Wednesday, the former chief minister visited Machilipatnam and slammed the ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) for ‘destroying’ the economy and financial condition of the state for the narrow personal gains of the ruling party leaders.

“In the past two years, the personal family treasury of CM Jagan Mohan Reddy is overflowing with ill-gotten funds while the treasury of the state has become empty. The profits of Bharati Cements soared to the skies while the tiny incomes of the poorer sections and middle classes got wiped out,” Naidu claimed.

He also questioned Reddy on why he was not wearing a mask and what example he was setting for the people.

Referring to the Rs 100 fine fixed for not wearing a mask, the TDP chief asked how many penalties should be levied on the CM for allegedly repeatedly failing to wear a mask.

“A young man was beaten to death for not wearing a mask in Chirala. On the other hand, Reddy was not leading the people by example in this respect,” he added.

TRS membership reaches 61 lakh

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi’s membership has reached 61 lakh, a senior party leader said on Wednesday.

TRS General Secretary Palla Rajeshwar Reddy claimed that the TRS is the only regional party in the country to have such a large number of members.

He told reporters, after a meeting of party Secretaries, that digitalisation of details of 48 lakh members had already completed, and those of the remaining members will be completed by July 20.

He said that the TRS has started construction of party offices in 31 districts. The work has been completed in 24 districts. The work in remaining seven districts is nearing completion.

Chief Minister and TRS President K. Chandrasekhara Rao will inaugurate the party office in every district.

Rajeshwar Reddy said the party will constitute committees from village to state level in the next two months.

He said the party would reach out to every worker and remain accessible to them. The TRS will also take steps to remain active over social media platforms.

The meeting, presided over by party’s Working President K.T. Rama Rao, discussed various issues to further strengthen the party.

Rajeshwar Reddy said the government has already filled 1.30 lakh vacancies in the government. He thanked the Chief Minister for taking steps to fill another 50,000 vacancies, saying this move would solve the problem of unemployment.

No political funding to Cong by pvt power cos: Punjab CM

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday hit out at the opposition AAP and SAD for “lying blatantly” on the issue of political funding from private power companies, saying unlike the illegal donations made to these parties by various shell companies, the funds provided to the Congress had nothing to do with the Punjab election.

Political donations by certain power companies were made not to the Punjab Congress but to the AICC, back in 2009 and 2014, with no connection whatsoever to the incumbent government in the state, said the Chief Minister, slamming both the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for spreading a “carnage of lies” in a desperate attempt to mislead the people ahead of the 2022 Punjab Assembly election.

The power purchase agreements (PPAs) in question were signed by the previous SAD-BJP government, and were legally binding so that his government could not rescind the same without heavy penalties on the cash-strapped state, he added.

His government, said the Chief Minister, was exploring legal recourse to neutralise ill-effects of the PPAs without further burdening the state’s exchequer, “which the Akalis, along with their BJP allies, had milked dry to fill their own pockets,” the Chief Minister said in a statement.

In fact, he added, as per media reports, the Akalis led by the Badals had taken more than Rs 100 crore in political funds and declared a measly Rs 13 crore, putting the rest in their personal pockets.

As for AAP, the donations taken by Arvind Kejriwal’s party during the 2014 election were already under the scanner of the Enforcement Directorate as, unlike the funds donated to AICC by the private power companies, these were neither accounted for nor declared, he said.

Media reports recently said the ED had registered a case pertaining to four cheques amounting to Rs 50 lakh, allegedly given to AAP during the 2014 Delhi Assembly election. Last year, Delhi Police had registered a case of forgery and cheating against the four companies.

While his government was busy working on solutions to address the problems “donated” to the people of Punjab by the Akalis, the party was busy wasting time on creating law and order problems in the state amid the Covid pandemic, thus multiplying the problems of the people, said the Chief Minister.

AAP also seemed to be in total collusion, choosing not to question the controversial and anti-people decisions of the previous SAD-BJP government in Punjab, but instead contributing to the troubles of the state’s people, he added.

The Chief Minister challenged both the parties to declare all their political funding of the past 10 years so that the people of Punjab would know the truth behind their claims and counter-claims.

Don’t get bogged down by expectations, PM tells Tokyo-bound athletes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday asked the Tokyo Olympics-bound Indian sportspersons not to get bogged down by the pressure of huge expectations and try and put up their best performance without bothering about the results.

“Don’t take pressure of winning, just tell yourself one thing that we will do our best. I will say it again ‘cheer for India’. I am sure you will touch new heights,” Prime Minister Modi told the 126 members of the Indian contingent and their family members during an interaction on Tuesday evening.

He said his government has provided all the facilities and support to the sportspersons and as a result athletes in such large number have qualified for Tokyo Olympics.

“Just like we have to combine hard work with good strategy to win in sports, the government has also done the same. We set up a committee, athletes were helped with the TOPS scheme. The development from before is being felt by you all. You sweat for the country and the flag and for that, the country stands strong beside you. We tried our best to help the athletes train, we listened to them, which is why we could bring so much betterment in such less time. With Khelo India and Fit India, things got better and the result is that a huge contingent is going to the Olympics this time.

“A lot of sports are such in which India has qualified for the first time. You have been practicing to win and we don’t doubt it all. I can see you all and say with conviction that winning will become new India’s habit. When you will wave the flag in Tokyo, the world will see. Don’t take pressure of winning, just tell yourself one thing that we will do our best. I will say it again ‘cheer for India’. I am sure you will touch new heights. I thank you all and I wish you all the very best. I salute your families. Thank you very much.”

He said he could not host them at his official residence in New Delhi, as had been done in past, because of the Coronovirus pandemic but promised to host them when they return from Tokyo.

“All the athletes and families, we spoke virtually today but I would have loved to have hosted you all in Delhi. Due to corona, we couldn’t do that. A lot of athletes are training abroad. Once you are back, I promise to meet you all in person. Corona changed a lot — Olympic year, your way of preparation. In Tokyo, the environment will be different. The nation got to know today how much you have worked hard for the country even in these tough times. I asked the country to cheer for you all and it makes me happy that the country is cheering for you. I have seen a lot of images on #CheerforIndia, the whole nation is cheering for you. Everyone is going to pray for you. I wish you all the very best,” he added.

He said the Tokyo-bound sportspersons were a reflection of new India.

“I see you all together and I see some things common – confidence, positivity, discipline, dedication and commitment. You are a reflection of new India. You come from all of India, some started in field, some in academies but all of you are part of Team India. You are going to represent the country, and this spirit is the image of India. You play with all your spirit, work more on your technique.”

The Prime Minster interacted with individual sportspersons, finding out about their progress, their trials and travails, the sacrifices their family have made to help them reach the top in their chosen sport. He extended his best wishes to each one of them for the Olympics.

He asked tennis star Sania Mirza about what does it take to become a tennis player? Sania replied that one needs “a lot of hard work and talent to make it big. Family’s support and dedication is also important and destiny does play a role. But there is no substitute for hard work and talent”.

She said things have improved a lot since she started and now we have better infrastructure and hoped that there will be more tennis players.

He asked Vinesh Phogat whether being part of a famous family means extra pressure. Vinesh replied: “There is pressure and expectation but I feel that is important and we push more due to expectation. There is no pressure, I will do well and hope to win a medal.”

He inquired with Vinesh about her recovery process the injury that ended her Rio Olympics dream in the quarterfinals. Vinesh said support of family, friends, federation and SAI helped her in those tough times.

“It is tough but as a top-level athlete, you have to be mentally strong. The family plays an important role but also the federation and SAI, and you don’t want to disappoint them. We can’t stop, this is how I think.”

The Prime Minister asked Commonwealth Games gold medallist table tennis player Manika Batra how did she get the thought to help underprivileged kids play TT. Manika told him that she saw talent in them and felt that they can do well if she helped them.

“I have seen you paint your nails with the National Flag. Why do you do that?,” he asked. Manika replied that she wants the flag close to her while playing and seeing the flag on her serving arm inspires her.

The Prime Minister asked reigning world champion in badminton and Rio Olympic silver-medallist, PV Sindhu, if she is staying away from mobile phone and ice creams just like before Rio when coach P Gopichand had taken away her mobile phone and did not allow her to eat ice creams.

Sindhu replied she had to take care of her diet and therefore she is not having ice cream much. The PM offered to have ice-cream with her when he hosts the medallists after they return from Tokyo.

He told star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra not to get bogged down by the pressure of expectations and inquired about how he kept himself motivated during his long layoff due to a shoulder and elbow injury in 2019.

He also interacted with hockey team captain Manpreet Singh, athlete Dutee Chand, five-time world champion MC Mary Kom, table tennis player Sharath Kamal, young shooters Saurabh Chaudhury and Elavenil Valarivan, who hails from Maninagar, which was Modi’s constituency when he was an MLA in Gujarat.

Stalin urges FM to exempt duties on muscular atrophy drugs

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has written a letter to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, requesting her to exempt Customs duty, Integrated GST (IGST) or any other taxes on the import of life-saving drugs for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy.

In the letter, a copy of which has been made available to the media, Stalin pointed out that Tamil Nadu itself has around 90 to 100 cases of spinal muscular atrophy on an annual basis.

He said that gene therapy for this genetic disorder costs over Rs 16 crore per person, adding that the duties on this drug increase its cost.

He said the parents of the children who are affected by this disease are not in a position to bear the cost of this drug as a single dose treatment (Zolgensma), or multiple-dose treatment (Spinraza) or gene- therapy treatment are way too expensive. He said the Risdiplam oral syrup is also very expensive.

Citing that the Union government had recently waived tax on the import of this medicine for a child suffering from spinal muscular atrophy, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister called upon the Union Finance Minister to consider the matter with urgency.

India and Vietnam review relations as Modi wishes Vietnam’s new PM

Extending his wishes to his newly appointed Vietnam counterpart Pham Minh Chinh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed confidence that the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries would continue to become stronger under his able guidance.

Modi welcomed the fact that both countries share a similar vision of an open, inclusive, peaceful and rules-based Indian Ocean Region, and hence the India-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership can contribute to promote regional stability, prosperity and development.

In this context, a statement issued from Prime Minister’s Office said, the Prime Minister also noted that both India and Vietnam were presently fellow members of the UN Security Council.

Prime Minister Modi pursued India’s opinion in a telephonic conversation with the Vietnam Prime Minister earlier this morning.

Modi thanked PM Chinh for the valuable support provided by the government and people of Vietnam during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in India.

The leaders agreed that both countries should continue consultations and cooperation to support each other’s continuing efforts against the pandemic.

Both Prime Ministers reviewed the state of bilateral relations and shared their views on different areas of cooperation.

Noting that year 2022 marked the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the leaders agreed to celebrate this auspicious milestone in a befitting manner through various commemorative activities.

Prime Minister Modi also invited PM Chinh to undertake an official visit to India at an early suitable date.

Andhra BJP says it will expose Jagan’s negligence on water disputes

Andhra Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Somu Veerraju on Saturday said that the party will soon come up with a plan to expose the alleged negligence of Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy over violation of existing water pacts.

“Very soon we will strategise a clear movement to ensure the completion of all the pending projects across the state and expose the negligence of Reddy even as Telandana CM’s antics are causing injustice to AP by violating existing water pacts,” said Veerraju.

He alleged that the chief ministers of both the Telugu states have colluded for personal and political gains, resorting to newer controversies and thereby preparing to sabotage both Rayalaseema and the people of the state.

Terming Reddy’s letters to the Centre as a drama, the BJP leader asserted that the party will not tolerate any alleged loss caused by those missives to the state at any cost.

“Disregarding several non-controversial projects, only the Polavaram project is being brought to the fore to inflate cost estimations and move around to approve them. On the other hand both these CMs talk to each other at night for their selfish gains,” claimed Veerraju.

Continuing his tirade against the neighbouring state’s Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), the opposition leader claimed that the foundations of the TRS have been jolted by the BJP’s ‘onslaught’, leading to TRS bringing Telangana sentient during elections to cause injustice to Rayalaseema people.

According to Veerraju, the water resources which Rayalaseema people were supposed to utilize are being wasted into the sea due to the poor understanding of Rao and Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP).

He claimed that the movement being devised by the BJP will not let even a drop of water due for AP go waste and make sure to complete all the pending projects.

Mansukh Mandaviya takes charge as new Health Minister

Senior BJP leader Mansukh Mandaviya on Thursday took charge of the key Health and Family Welfare Ministry amid the ongoing Covid pandemic.

Mandaviya was previously the Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Union Minister of State for Chemical and Fertilisers in the Modi government.

He will also soon take charge of the Chemicals and Fertilisers Ministry.

Mandaviya was given the new responsibility after the first cabinet reshuffle in Modi government’s second stint on Wednesday.

The Health Ministry was held by Harsh Vardhan, who is one of the top ministers to be dropped in the reshuffle. The Chemicals and Fertilisers Ministry was held by D.V. Sadananda Gowda who is also out of the cabinet.

In a major overhaul, Prime Minister Modi on Wednesday brought in 36 new faces to his Union Cabinet and promoted seven existing ministers. Meanwhile, 12 top ministers, including Harsh Vardhan, Ravi Shankar Prasad and Prakash Javadekar, have been dropped from the Cabinet.

Tamil Nadu BJP chief Murugan sworn in as Union minister

Tamil Nadu state BJP president and noted lawyer in the Madras High Court, L. Murugan was sworn in as a Union Minister of State in the Union Cabinet on Wednesday.

The 44-year-old BJP leader has been a practicing lawyer at the Madras High Court for 15 years and has been a central government standing counsel ever since the BJP government assumed office.

After Pon Radhakrishnan, this is the second time a BJP leader from Tamil Nadu has been included in the Modi government as a minister.

Murugan was serving as state president of the BJP since March 2020 and had served as the Vice-Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes from 2017 to 2020.

He was a leader of the ABVP in his student days.

In 2021 Assembly election, Murugan lost in the Dharapuram constituency by a margin of 812 votes to DMK leader N. Kayalvizhi.

Revanth Reddy takes charge as Congress’ new Telangana chief

A. Revanth Reddy on Wednesday took charge as the new President of Congress in Telangana and vowed to liberate the state from what he called the “misrule” of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and his family members.

Taking the charge amid much fanfare and enthusiasm in the party, he called upon the leaders and workers to join hands to bring the party to power in 2023.

Addressing a public meeting, he alleged that four crore people of Telangana have “become hostage in the hands of four persons”.

Hitting out at the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and Chief Minister Rao, the MP alleged that there is no freedom and self-rule in the state under their rule.

Revanth Reddy said Congress President Sonia Gandhi gave him the responsibility to work to fulfill the aspirations of people of Telangana.

Admonishing some workers who raised slogans hailing him, he said there should be no slogans in support of any individual leader other than party chief Sonia Gandhi and senior leader Rahul Gandhi. He said slogans in support of individuals will damage the party.

The event was marked by enthusiasm among party workers at Gandhi Bhavan, the headquarters of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee.

Revanth Reddy, who reached the party office in a huge rally, took charge from outgoing chief Uttam Kumar Reddy in the presence of All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary incharge of party affairs in Kerala Tariq Anwar, AICC incharge for Telangana Manickam Tagore and several other leaders of the party.

Amid chanting of Vedic hymns by priests, Uttam Kumar Reddy handed over the charge to Revanth Reddy who was appointed to the top post on June 26.

The newly-appointed TPCC Working Presidents including former Indian cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin, and former minister J. Geetha Reddy and others were present.

The public meeting organised on the occasion became a show of unity by the party leaders. Barring MP Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, who publicly criticised the appointment of Revanth Reddy, and few others, leaders came together and vowed to work as a team to bring Congress to power in 2023 elections.

Leaders, who were reported to be unhappy over Revant Reddy’s appointment, also attended the celebration.

Congress Legislature Party leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, former Union Minister Renuka Chowdary, former TPCC chief Ponnala Laxmaiah, former Deputy Chief Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha, AICC Secretary Madhu Goud Yaskhi and others were present.

Earlier, Revanth Reddy offered prayers at a temple and a dargah before reaching the Congress HQ in a rally attended by large number of supporters. Party leaders say Gandhi Bhavan saw such celebration for the first time in seven years. The last time it witnessed a grand celebration was in 2014 when Telangana was carved out as a separate state with bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

Despite granting statehood to Telangana, the Congress suffered defeat in 2014 and 2018 elections at the hands of the TRS.

Some party leaders feel Revanth Reddy’s appointment will help revive party’s fortunes. However, the 53-year-old is also facing dissent from some senior leaders who were in the race for the post.

Revanth, known as a fire-brand leader and considered popular among youth, had resigned from the Telugu Desam Party to join the Congress.

Bihar Cong leaders meet Rahul amid talks of change of guard

Amid talks of change in party organization in the state, Congress leaders and MLAs from Bihar were called to Delhi to meet Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday. The Congress is contemplating a change in leadership in the state after party fared badly in the last year’s assembly elections.

The Congress is headed in the state by Madan Mohan Jha and despite alliance with the RJD and contesting on 70 seats, the party could not cross 20 in the state.

Former Lok Sabha Speaker and senior Congress leader Meira Kumar said, “the meeting was to discuss how to strengthen the party in the state.”

Many Congress leaders are in fray for the top post in Bihar, but the party is considering to appoint somebody from the scheduled caste.

Sources have said that Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar and his aides are in contact with some of the Congress MLAs and Congress’ top leaders learnt about the development.

However, the party’s top leadership has denied any such developments.

Madan Mohan Jha, Bihar Congress chief told in an interview: “Our MLAs and MPs are with us and they have faith in the Congress party and leadership of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.”

“Our MLAs, MLCs, MPs and ex-CLP leaders and other top state leaders had expressed desire to meet with Rahul Gandhi and he gave us time on July 7,” Jha said.

Murari Gautam, Congress MLA from Chenari in Rohtas told in an interview: “We have an executive committee meeting scheduled on July 7 where we will discuss the present political circumstances of Bihar and future policies with our leader Rahul Gandhi.”

Yogi, Mayawati condole Dilip Kumar’s demise

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday condoled the passing away of veteran Bollywood superstar Dilip Kumar.

In a tweet, the chief minister said that his passing away is an “irreparable loss to the film industry”. He said that he prayed to God to give strength to his family to bear the loss.

Bahujan Samaj party president and former chief minister Mayawati also expressed grief over the demise of Dilip Kumar and conveyed her condolences to his wife Saira Banu.

The 98-year-old actor passed away in Mumbai earlier in the day due to age-related illness, his family confirmed. He died at the private Hinduja Hospital where he had been admitted for certain breathing-related issues.

Modi cabinet reshuffle expected soon, BJP MPs asked to reach Delhi

Amid strong buzz in the political circle about possible reshuffle in the union cabinet later this week, first in the second term of the Narendra Modi government, sources said that cabinet reshuffle is likely to take place in a couple of days and BJP MPs are asked to reach the national capital at the earliest.

However, there is no confirmation from the party or the government about the time of possible cabinet reshuffle.

A party insider said that BJP chief J.P. Nadda, who is on a two-day visit to Himachal Pradesh, will be returning to New Delhi on Tuesday evening. “Nadda ji has reached Himachal Pradesh to attend his personal and organisational program. He is reaching Delhi later today for some important work,” he said.

Sources said that ahead of reshuffle the Prime Minister is likely to hold a meeting with senior ministers and party chief Nadda in the evening but there is no confirmation about the meeting.

Party functionaries claimed that calls were made to several party leaders who are expected to be inducted in the cabinet, to reach Delhi. “Following the direction of party leadership, former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Rajya Sabha member Jyotiraditya Scindia are reaching Delhi today,” he said.

Sources said that Jyotiraditya Scindia, who is likely to be inducted in Modi cabinet, has cut short his visit to Indore in Madhya Pradesh and is reaching the national capital in evening. “Earlier Scindia is expected to take on a flight from Indore to Delhi on July 7 at 11 a.m. But after he was asked to reach Delhi at the earliest, Scindia is leaving for Delhi from Indore at 3.30 p.m. on Tuesday. Before leaving for Delhi, Scindia took blessings at Mahakal Temple in Ujjain,” said a BJP leader aware of the Scindia program.

Amid the buzz, a video of former union minister late Ram Vilas Paswan’s brother Pashupati Paras went viral in which he is seen buying clothes for his new ‘kurta’ he is likely to wear in swearing in ceremony.

“Inducting Paras in the cabinet will also clarify BJP’s stand that which faction of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) has the support of the Prime Minister and the saffron party,” a party leader said.

Some BJP MPs eyeing the ministerial berth this time, however, said that they have not received any call from either the Prime Minister office or party. “Appinting a minister is the prerogative of the Prime Minister. I haven’t received any call but heard MPs are asked to reach Delhi as soon as possible,” a BJP MP said.

Another BJP functionary said that alliance partner Janta Dal United (JD-U) leaders — R.C.P. Singh and Rajeev Ranjan ‘Lallan’ are also reaching the national capital. “JD-U who did not join the Modi government in 2019 is likely to get two ministerial berths while the party is asking for three,” he said.

Apna Dal chief Anupriya Patel is also likely to be made minister. She was part of the Modi government in the first term.

Party sources claimed that reshuffle is due and it will happen before the monsoon session of parliament starting from July 19 but it may happen in the next few days. “Cabinet expansion is due to fill up the vaccines and it is believed that it will happen soon this week,” he said.

Since last month there have been speculations about possible union cabinet reshuffle and the Prime Minister held several rounds of discussion with senior party leaders including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, party chief Nadda and general secretary (organisation) B.L. Santhosh. He (Modi) personally reviewed the performance of existing ministers.

Sources claimed that few ministers will be dropped and they will be accommodated in some other position.

“Union Minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot has been appointed governor of Karnataka. More ministers and especially those above 70 years are likely to be dropped and might be appointed governor, Gehlot is aged around 73 years. We heard that the Prime Minister is likely to induct young faces to give a new look to his cabinet,” they said.

How the young impressed Modi with ‘Heritage Race’ VR game

A virtual game that allows users to view historic monuments while cycling indoors has won accolades from Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the grand finale of the digital ‘Toycathon 2021’ event organised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and some key ministries.

Nineteen-year-old civil engineering student Athik Mohamed M. from Thiagarajar Polytechnic College in Salem, Tamil Nadu, added a layer of virtual reality (VR) to the exercise cycle so that the rider could ‘go’ somewhere while cycling away.

Athik presented his digitally-connected racer that promotes Indian culture and heritage while being physically active to Modi in a virtual session. Athik and his team also added soothing Vedic music in the background — just the right dose to capture the PM’s attention.

Modi appreciated the new game idea and suggested that the team should devise a similar mechanism for a treadmill user.

According to a college statement, Athik assured the prime minister to work on his suggestion, along with team members Deepesh M and Anung Yangfo K.

“I felt honoured. I will work on the ideas suggested by the PM to enhance the scope of this game,” Athik said.

What is needed is a VR headset, a phone, and the app to play the ‘Heritage Race’ game.

What makes the game interesting is that users on a regular bicycle can follow heritage routes and even listen to soothing Vedic music in the background. The user gets a 360-degree view.

‘Toycathon 2021’ was organised by the Ministry of Education and AICTE in coordination with Ministries of Women & Child Development, Information & Broadcasting, Commerce & Industry and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Textiles.

‘Toycathon’ programme encourages the development of innovative toys and games.

Of the nearly 17,000 ideas submitted, 1,567 ideas were shortlisted for the three-day online Toycathon grand finale in end June, and only seven outstanding ideas were chosen to be presented to the Prime Minister and the ‘Heritage Race’ game was one of those seven ideas.

“We encouraged the participating team to continue innovating to overcome technical challenges,” said V. Karthikeyan, Principal, adding that Thiagarajar Polytechnic College and Sona College of Technology Chairman, C. Valliappa, encouraged young students to put in their best to create digital toys and support ‘AatmaNirbhar Bharat Innovate Challenge’.

VP calls for research on zoonotic diseases

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu on Friday underlined the need for research to predict zoonotic diseases better.

Alluding to zoonotic diseases like Covid-19, he urged the researchers and zoos to utilize their resources and expertise optimally to predict emerging infectious diseases from animals to humans.

He visited Laboratory for the Conservation of Endangered Species (LaCONES) at CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad on Friday. The Vice President interacted with the wildlife scientists and saw the main facilities for wildlife conservation at LaCONES. This included the National Wildlife Genetic Resource Bank and the Assisted Reproduction Lab.

He also released a book on ‘Introduction to Genetic Resource Banks for Wildlife Conservation’ authored by LaCONES and Central Zoo Authority.

Venkaiah Naidu emphasized on the importance of studying wildlife for conserving endangered species and to also understand and predict zoonotic diseases better. “Research institutes such as LaCONES-CCMB and zoos have to work together. Zoos across the country can avail themselves the different modern biology tools for studying diseases in wildlife, preserve their genetic material, avail assisted reproductive technologies. They should also be a partner in research to understand reproductive anatomy and physiology in wildlife,” he said.

Recently Central Zoo Authority formed a consortium of six zoos from different parts of India and LaCONES-CCMB. “Central Zoo Authority has been instrumental in bringing zoos together with a research institute like ours. We want this consortium to set an example of how zoos and a wildlife research institute like LaCONES can work cohesively towards shared goals. The National Wildlife Genetic Resource Bank at LaCONES can become a storehouse of biological samples from all zoos in India. These samples can then be used for artificial insemination, creating sperms and oocytes through modern biotechnological tools, and help revive the endangered animals,” said Dr. Karthikeyan Vasudevan, Scientist-in-charge at LaCONES-CCMB.

Vinay Nandicoori, Director, CSIR-CCMB observed that in the current scene of climate change and a pandemic, it is necessary and timely that active collaborations happen between molecular biologists, ecologists, and zoos. “Many countries have shown examples of how this can be done impactfully. And LaCONES-CCMB has demonstrated its capabilities over the last decade. It is time for Indian zoos to take advantage of our tools and expertise,” he said.

Yogi govt claims to fulfil promises of 2017 manifesto

The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has claimed to fulfill the Bharatiya Janata Party’s pledge for agricultural development as well as promises made to the farmers in its Lok Kalyan Sankalp Patra, which was released during the last state Assembly elections in 2017.

According to a government spokesman, the Yogi Adityanath government’s journey to develop agriculture and uplift farmers began with the waiving off loans to the tune of a whopping Rs 36,000 crore of 86 lakh farmers.

This was followed by the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi and Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojna to recognize progressive and innovative farmers as well as provide an insurance cover for their produce respectively.

From laying a strong foundation for agricultural development to making it a profitable sector and doubling farmers’ income, the Yogi government has many achievements to boast of.

In the last four years, the state government has made a record payment of Rs 1,37,891 crore to 45.74 lakh sugarcane farmers, which is two times more than payments made during the Bahujan Samaj Party government and one and a half times more than made during the Samajwadi Party government’s tenure.

Fulfilling the promise of development of agriculture, farmers, and farm laborers, the Yogi government not only achieved record grain production and procurement but also made direct payments to the accounts of farmers within 72 hours, eliminating middlemen from the procurement process.

The spokesman said that the agricultural production in the state increased from 389.28 lakh metric tonnes in 2014-2015 to 624.19 lakh metric tonnes in 2020-2021.

The procurement of paddy, maize, and wheat also increased manifold.

Other achievements of the Yogi Adityanath government include promoting cow-based zero budget farming, running 119 sugar mills during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, granting license for sanitizer production to 91 sugar mills, generation of electricity worth Rs 1500 crore at sugar mills.

The state government has also ensured completion of the Ban Sagar Dam project which was pending for 46 years as well as eight other small and medium scale dam projects, registration of 6.18 crore farmers under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, the establishment of 20 new Krishi Vigyan Kendras, registration of two lakh farmers on e-procurement portal.

Citing ‘privileges’, Kerala govt moves SC to drop suits against Left leaders

The Pinarayi Vijayan government has moved the Supreme Court seeking its nod to withdraw cases against CPI(M) leaders, including Kerala Education Minister V. Sivankutty, for vandalism inside Assembly in 2015, when the current regime was not in power.

The Kerala High Court, in an order passed on March 12, had refused to give its nod to the same saying that the elected representatives were expected to uphold the prestige of the House or face consequences.

The MLAs had vandalized the Speaker’s dais, uprooted his chair, pulled out the mike system, computer, etc.

The special leave petition filed by the state government said: “When Article 105(3), 194(3) of the Constitution of India confers certain privileges and immunities to the members of the Parliament and State Legislature, is it proper for the Secretary of Legislative Assembly to file cases against the MLAs with regard to an incident that happened on the floor of the House during the protest made by the opposition members, that too without the consent of the Speaker of the Assembly?”

The state government contended that the high court failed to appreciate the fact that the alleged offenses under Section 447 and 427 of IPC and Section 3(1) of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, happened on the floor of the Legislative Assembly during the Budget Session of the legislature as a part of the protest by opposition members against the budget presentation by the then Finance Minister due to the then prevailing political reason.

“The FIR registered by the Secretary Legislative Assembly without the consent of the Speaker is wrong and therefore the application filed under section 321 Cr.P.C. is liable to be allowed.

“The act of the accused persons being in relation to their function to protest as members of the legislative assembly the MLAs who are accused in this FIR, entitled to get protection under the Constitution,” argued the state government.

The Kerala High Court had dismissed the state’s petition against an order of rejection by the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court in Thiruvananthapuram, seeking permission to withdraw prosecution against accused, including sitting ministers.

The government argued that Article 105(3), 194(3) of the Constitution confers certain privileges and immunities to the members of the Parliament and state Legislature.

“Therefore, it is not proper for the Secretary of Legislative Assembly to file cases against the MLAs with regard to an incident happened on the floor of the House during the protest made by the opposition members, that too without the consent of the Speaker of the Assembly,” added the plea, seeking stay on the high court order.

India to have 257 crore vaccine doses by December: Nadda

Bharatiya Janata Party national president J.P. Nadda has said that by December, India will have about 257 crore vaccine doses. The country is fully prepared to provide both doses of the vaccine to everyone, he said.

Nadda said every BJP worker will participate in this mega vaccination campaign with full vigor and will make India Covid-free.

Attacking the opposition, Nadda said that some political leaders are seen only on Twitter nowadays, some are seen in press conferences, some only give press handouts. “All political leaders have gone into quarantine during the pandemic, but BJP workers are risking their lives to serve the people,” he said.

Nadda added: “The leaders who had earlier expressed doubts about the vaccine are getting the vaccine now. I want to ask whether they changed their mind, changed their hearts, or changed their souls. They did not even spare this holy work for doing politics. There has been a lot of politics on the vaccine. The opposition leaders had earlier expressed doubts on the vaccine. An attempt was made to obstruct this great campaign by making false statements. Despite this, 130 crore people of the country have come forward for vaccination on the appeal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

Sasikala is a burden on the AIADMK: Former minister

Senior AIADMK leader and former minister, Natham R Viswanathan has said that the party’s ex- interim general secretary V.K. Sasikala was a burden on the party.

A statement released on Sunday after a resolution against Sasikala was adopted at the Dindugal district committee meeting of the AIADMK, said that neither the party cadres nor the people of Tamil Nadu wanted her back in the party.

The Dindigul meeting also decided to expel those cadres or middle-level functionaries who have any truck with Sasikala. Rebuking the former interim general secretary, he said Sasikala is telling the cadres that a mother (Sasikala) cannot be separated from the child (Cadre); in fact, she is not a mother, she is something else.

The AIADMK leadership has passed similar resolutions in all districts against Sasikala but the stoic silence of O Panneerselvam and his home district unit of Theni not passing a resolution has raised eyebrows. Both Sasikala and Panneerselvam are from the powerful Thevar community which has a sizeable presence in South Tamil Nadu.

However, Sasikala again reached out to party cadres on Sunday and said, “Amma (Jayalalithaa) also faced a similar situation after the death of MGR and she was rebuked and ridiculed by the party leaders but later things turned around and she took control of the party and a similar situation will happen here also.”

She said that the senior leaders of the party are fearing her entry into the party as they know that the cadres and lower-level leaders are in favor of her entry.

AIADMK Chief Whip, S. P. Velumani conducted a meeting of his Coimbatore district unit on Sunday and passed resolutions of her sparking casteist feelings among the party cadres. The party resolution said, “The AIADMK will not surrender to the whims and fancies of one family and that the party has no connection with Sasikala or her extended family.”

AIADMK politics of Tamil Nadu is in for a churn and Sasikala is allegedly trying to make use of the opportunity for an entry into the party and later take control of it with the support of her nephew TTV Dhinakaran who is presently heading the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK).
