Re-Releases Dominate Telugu Theatres Again Amid New Release Drought
With exhibitors in the Telugu states already struggling to draw crowds, the lack of strong new releases is adding more pressure to the box office. Last week’s major release, Thug Life, failed to make a mark, leaving fans and theater owners disappointed.
This week, the situation hasn’t improved. Pawan Kalyan’s Hari Hara Veera Mallu was initially scheduled for release but has been postponed again, leaving the weekend without any notable big-screen debut. A handful of small-budget films did hit theatres, but none created buzz or drew significant footfalls.
In the absence of major new content, re-releases are once again ruling the box office. Romantic drama Andala Rakshasi (2012), directed by Hanu Raghavapudi, made its return to theatres today. Known for its soulful music and cult following among millennials, the film is reportedly pulling decent crowds in Hyderabad.
Meanwhile, disappointed by the delay of HHVM, Pawan Kalyan fans are revisiting his classic love story Tholi Prema, which has been re-released once more. Adding to the nostalgia trip, Ravi Teja’s iconic comedy Venky has also returned to theaters and is attempting to recreate some of its original box office magic.
June continues to be a testing month for exhibitors, who are eagerly awaiting a commercial success. All hopes are now pinned on the upcoming release of Kubera, starring Dhanush and Nagarjuna, which is set to arrive in theaters next Friday.
