Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) captain KL Rahul leads the IPL 2020 run-getters’ list with 540 runs in the race for Orange Cap.

He is well ahead of Delhi Capitals’ opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan, who has 465 runs. Thanks to his twin centuries, Dhawan has moved ahead of Rahul’s KXIP teammate and fellow opener Mayank Agarwal who has 398 runs.

Chennai Super Kings’ Faf du Plessis (376) and Mumbai Indians’ Quinton de Kock (368) make the top five.

Among bowlers, pace bowler Kagiso Rabada of Delhi Capitals leads the race for Purple Cap. Rabada has taken 21 wickets.

Mumbai Indians paceman Jasprit Bumrah is next with 17 wickets. Bumrah has one wicket more than fellow Mumbai Indians fast bowler Trent Boult, who has 16.

KXIP’s Mohammed Shami (16), RCB’s Yuzvendra Chahal (15) and Rajasthan Royals’ Jofra Archer (15) are not far behind.

Mumbai Indians moved to the top of the table with 14 points after their emphatic 10-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings on Friday night.

Mumbai Indians, who were third before the start of the match against CSK with 12 points, leapfrogged Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Delhi Capitals (DC).

While all the three teams are on 14 points now, Mumbai Indians are ahead of the pack with better net run rate.

Biden pledges free Covid-19 vaccines for all if elected

0

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has said that if he is elected in the November 3 election, he will make Covid-19 vaccines free for all Americans.

“Once we have a safe and effective vaccine, it has to be free to everyone — whether or not you’re insured,” Xinhua news agency quoted Biden as saying during a speech in Wilmington, Delaware, on Friday.

He once again slammed President Donald Trump for his response to the coronavirus pandemic, saying he has “given up” fighting the virus and has “quit on America”.

The former Vice President made the pledge a day after he debated Trump for the last and final time before the November 3 election.

The coronavirus pandemic was a central topic in the debate.

“Covid-19 dwarfs anything that we’ve faced in recent history, and it isn’t showing any signs of slowing down,” said Biden, adding that the virus, which has now killed more than 223,000 people nationwide, “is surging in almost every state”.

“We’re more than eight months into this crisis and the president still doesn’t have a plan,” said the 77-year-old.

He also laid out his pandemic response plan if elected, which includes consultation with governors of all the 50 states during the presidential transition period; a national mask mandate in all federal buildings and on all interstate transportation; and an increase in daily testing reaching seven times today’s level.

Trump, during the debate the previous night, boasted about a vaccine that is coming “within weeks,” only to backtrack when pressed by the moderator, saying his statement was not a “guarantee”.

Biden’s remarks on Friday came as the US is trying to battle a resurgence of fresh coronavirus cases.

Presently the worst-hit country in the world by the pandemic, the US has so far reported 8,484,991 Covid-19 cases and 223,914 deaths.

Apple fixes 6 malicious apps posing as Adobe Flash installers

0

The malicious apps masquerading as Adobe Flash installer are not going to go away anytime soon as Apple has once again fixed six more such apps.

Cybercriminals managed to pass malicious apps through the Apple app “notarization” process for the second time this year, reports ZDNet.

The malware passed through the strict Apple “notarisation” process that scans an app for security issues. Once approved, Mac’s in-built security screening software called “Gatekeeper” allowed the app to run.

Once added to the GateKeeper whitelist, notarized apps can be opened and installed with a simple click, without any warnings or popups.

“App notarization has been mandatory for all apps that want to run on Apple’s newest macOS releases, like Catalina and Big Sur”.

The six new notarised apps posed as Flash installers.

Once installed, the apps would download and install the OSX/MacOffers adware.

OSX/MacOffers is known for modifying the search engine in the victim’s browser.

The six malicious apps have now been de-notarised by Apple.

Adobe is set to retire Flash at the end of the year and people are advised not to download Flash installers.

For close to two years, the Slayer Trojan has been the most common threat on the Apple macOS platform.

In August, Apple fixed a malware disguised as an update for Adobe Flash player that slipped through its toughest security screening software and got approved for its Mac desktops.

NASA’s spacecraft collects significant amount of Asteroid Bennu

0

After touching down on asteroid Bennu, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx probe team received images that confirm the spacecraft has collected more than enough material to meet one of its main mission requirements — acquiring at least 60 grams of the asteroids precious surface material, the US space agency said on Saturday.

In reviewing these images, the OSIRIS-REx team noticed both that the head appeared to be full of asteroid particles, and that some of these particles appeared to be escaping slowly from the sample collector.

The sample collected by the spacecraft will return to Earth in 2023.

“Bennu continues to surprise us with great science and also throwing a few curveballs,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA’s associate administrator for science at NASA.

“Although we may have to move more quickly to stow the sample, it’s not a bad problem to have. We are so excited to see what appears to be an abundant sample that will inspire science for decades beyond this historic moment,” he said in a statement.

The team believes it has collected a sufficient sample and is on a path to stow the sample as quickly as possible.

To preserve the material, the mission team decided to forego the Sample Mass Measurement activity originally scheduled for Saturday and canceled a braking burn scheduled for Friday to minimize any acceleration to the spacecraft.

“From here, the OSIRIS-Rex team will focus on stowing the sample in the Sample Return Capsule (SRC), where any loose material will be kept safe during the spacecraft’s journey back to Earth,” NASA informed.

OSIRIS-REx remains in good health, and the mission team is finalizing a timeline for sample storage.

“We are working to keep up with our own success here, and my job is to safely return as large a sample of Bennu as possible,” said Dante Lauretta, OSIRIS-REx principal investigator at the University of Arizona.

“The loss of mass is of concern to me, so I’m strongly encouraging the team to stow this precious sample as quickly as possible.”

After over a decade of planning, a NASA spacecraft made history this week after it successfully touched an asteroid.

Bennu offers scientists a window into the early solar system as it was first taking shape billions of years ago and flinging ingredients that could have helped seed life on Earth.

Turkey tests Russian S-400 defence system: Prez

0

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed that the country’s army had been testing the Russian-made S-400 air defense system.

“It is true about the tests. They have been done and will continue,” Xinhua news agency quoted Erdogan as saying to reporters after Friday prayers in Istanbul.

Turkey’s purchase of S-400 missiles from Russia has sparked reactions from the US, straining the ties between the two NATO allies.

The US has warned about possible sanctions in case of the activation of the system.

However, Erdogan stressed that his country is determined on the matter and would continue its decision-making.

“We are not going to ask the US for permission,” the Turkish leader asserted.

In reaction to the test, the US Department of Defence on Friday warned of serious consequences of bilateral security relationship.

The testing risked serious consequences for the security relationship between Washington and Ankara, Chief Pentagon Spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement, adding that an operational S-400 system is inconsistent with Turkey’s commitments as a US and NATO ally.

“Turkey has already been suspended from the F-35 program and the S-400 continues to be a significant barrier to progress elsewhere in the bilateral relationship,” the statement said.

Media reports last week claimed that Turkey’s test-firing was conducted in the country’s northern province of Sinop.

Russia and Turkey finalized the deal worth about $2.5 billion in 2017, and the delivery was completed in 2019.

Turkey is the first NATO member to purchase such an air defense missile system from Russia.

The S-400 missile system is considered the most advanced of its kind in Russia, capable of destroying targets at a distance of up to 400 km and a height of up to 30 km.

As spike continues, India’s Covid tally crosses 78L-mark

0

After dipping below 47,000 four days back, a spike in daily fresh corona cases has once again been recorded. A total of 53,370 new infections and 650 deaths reported in the last 24 hours has taken India’s total tally to 78,14,682, data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Saturday.

Out of the total Covid cases, 6,80,680 are currently active, 70,16,046 have been discharged, while 1,17,956 lost the battle against the pandemic.

While the recovery rate stands at 89.53 percent, the fatality rate is 1.51 percent, the ministry data said.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit with a total of 16,25,197 cases, including 42,831 deaths; followed by Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi.

According to the data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), India conducted 12,69,479 sample tests in a single day on Friday, taking the total number of samples tested so far to 10,13,82,564.

Zuckerberg, Dorsey to testify before US senate judiciary panel

0

The US Senate Judiciary Committee has asked Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to testify before it on November 17 over suppressing a media article on Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.

Both Facebook and Twitter faced a backlash from the Republicans and US President Donald Trump for their move to block and censor the article that appeared in The New York Post and was critical of Joe Biden.

The Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) on Friday announced that Twitter CEO Dorsey and Facebook CEO Zuckerberg will appear voluntarily before the committee on November 17.

“The hearing will focus on the platforms’ censorship and suppression of New York Post articles and provide a valuable opportunity to review the companies’ handling of the 2020 election,” the Senate Judiciary Committee said in a statement.

After the New York Post published a series of stories citing emails, purportedly sent by Biden’s son, Twitter blocked users from posting pictures of the emails, citing its rules against sharing “content obtained through hacking that contains private information”.

Facebook also limited the spread of the story, saying the story had made unverified claims about Hunter Biden’s Ukraine business and therefore the story was eligible for third-party fact-checking.

Later, in a reversal of its earlier stance, Twitter decided to allow users to share the article.

The company allowed the distribution of the article because the “once-private information in the article has now been made widely available across the Internet”.

Dorsey admitted that the initial blocking of the article without explanation was not the right decision.

US judge again blocks Trump’s executive order to ban WeChat

0

A US judge has once again halted President Donald Trump’s executive order to ban WeChat, a Chinese messaging social-media and mobile-payment app.

A judge in California rejected a request from the US Department of Justice to reverse a previous decision allowing WeChat, owned by the Chinese company Tencent app, to remain active in app stores, The Verge reported on Friday.

“The record does not support the conclusion that the government has ‘narrowly tailored’ the prohibited transactions to protect its national security interests,” the judge said.

The evidence “supports the conclusion that the restrictions ‘burden substantially more speech than is necessary to further the government’s legitimate interests.'”

On August 6, Trump issued an executive order banning US transactions via WeChat.

To fight for the legal rights of all WeChat users in the country, USWUA which is an NGO sued the Trump administration for the ban. The lawsuit opened in court on September 17.

Meanwhile, the US Department of Justice earlier this month appealed against a recent federal court ruling that barred the Trump administration’s attempt to block TikTok downloads.

Judge Carl Nichols of the US District Court for the District of Columbia late last month halted the ban after TikTok’s attorneys argued that the US administration’s ban infringes on rights to free speech and due process.

The government began the appeals process against the ruling with a notice of appeal earlier this month.

The administration urged the US Court of Appeals in Washington to review the September 27 ruling that halted the ban.

Before the ruling, the Commerce Department had said that TikTok downloads would be banned from September 20, and further restrictions aimed at making the app unusable would go into effect from November 12 unless a deal that satisfactorily addresses the administration’s security concerns is reached.

PM Modi to interact with CEOs of global oil and gas companies

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with CEOs of leading global oil and gas companies on Monday in the annual roundtable event organized by NITI Aayog and Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

India is an important player in the global Oil and gas sector, being the third-largest consumer of crude oil and the fourth-largest LNG importer.

Realizing the need for India to graduate from a passive consumer to an active and vocal stakeholder in the global oil & gas value chain, NITI Aayog initiated the first roundtable of global oil & gas CEOs with the Prime Minister in 2016.

The growth of the event was apparent as around 45-50 global CEOs and key stakeholders who shape the global oil & gas sector assembled every subsequent year to interact and discuss the issues and opportunities with the Prime Minister.

The impact of the annual global CEOs’ interaction can be seen in the gravity of discussion, quality of suggestions, and the seriousness with which they are acted upon, an official statement said.

This will be the 5th such event organized by NITI Aayog and Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, and around 45 CEOs of major oil & gas companies will attend this year.

The objective behind the meeting is to deliver a global platform to understand best practices, discuss reforms, and inform strategies for accelerating investments into the Indian oil & gas value chain. The annual interaction has gradually become one of the most important gatherings of not only intellectual debate but also of executive action.

The event also grows in stature with the rise of India, the world’s third-largest energy consumer, which is likely to see over $300 billion investment by 2030 in the oil & gas sector to meet rising demand.

Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will give the opening remarks, which will be followed by a comprehensive presentation giving an overview of the Indian oil & gas sector, and explaining the ambition and opportunities in it.

This is to be followed by the interaction session with global CEOs and experts.

Key global oil & gas stakeholders like Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) CEO Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE’s Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and Deputy Chairman, President & CEO, Qatar Petroleum, Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, and the OPEC Secretary-General will lead the session with their inputs on the oil & gas sector.

Rosneft Chairman & CEO Igor Sechin, BP Ltd CEO Bernard Looney, Total S.A. Chairman & CEO Patrick Pouyanne, Vedanta Resource Ltd Chairman Anil Agarwal, RIL Chairman & Managing Director, Mukesh Ambani, International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol, International Energy Forum Secretary-General Joseph McMonigle, and GECF Secretary General Yury Sentyurin will also share their inputs.

CEOs & experts of major oil & gas companies like Lyondell Basell, Tellurian, Schlumberger, Baker Hughes, JERA, Emerson, and X-Coal, as well as of Indian oil & gas companies will also present their perspective.

Prior to this, Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate the India Energy Forum by CERAWeek, now in its fourth year. It is hosted by IHS Markit, a world leader in critical information, analytics, and solutions. The event will convene an international group of speakers and a community of over a thousand delegates from India and over 30 countries, including from regional energy companies, energy-related industries, institutions, and governments.

Argentina extends Covid-19 restrictions until Nov 8

0

Argentina has decided to prolong its isolation and social distancing measures aimed at controlling the spread of the novel coronavirus until November 8, President Alberto Fernandez announced.

“From the day the (current) quarantine expires, we will continue the measure for another 14 days,” Xinhua news agency quoted the President as saying at an event on Friday.

Argentina became the fifth country in the world and the second in Latin America to hit 1 million Covid-19 cases earlier this week.

“The virus has spread beyond the cities. It is also in small towns, and it is logical that this happens when people continue to travel,” Fernandez said.

Argentina registered its first Covid-19 case on March 3 and went into quarantine two weeks later.

Currently, the country accounts for 1,069,368 confirmed cases and 28,338 deaths.

FB details privacy work as US FTC discusses antitrust lawsuit

0

Facing intense scrutiny over user privacy and data security, Facebook has said it is continuing to invest in research and innovation that will help it build privacy-safe products and develop new ways to process data.

The announcement came after media reports claimed that a federal antitrust probe targeting Facebook appears to have entered its late stages and the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) members have made a recommendation to the agency’s commissioners on whether to file an antitrust complaint against Facebook.

Facebook said on Friday that it will “continue working with policymakers, privacy experts and others on emerging privacy areas as we build solutions to ensure people feel safe and comfortable using our products”.

Over the past several months, said Facebook, it has made changes to Public Groups and built new products like Shops on Facebook and Instagram, Facebook Campus, and Accounts Center.

“Thanks to effective collaboration across multiple teams at Facebook, these products all succeed in giving people the best experience, while also honoring their privacy,” said Michel Protti, Chief Privacy Officer, Product.

“This is made possible by our revamped Privacy Review process, which helps ensure every new product or feature is built with privacy in mind, meaning it has the appropriate tools and processes in place to help address potential risks and protect people’s information”.

In April this year, a federal court approved Facebook’s agreement with the FTC.

As part of the agreement, Facebook formed a Privacy Committee of its Board of Directors for overseeing risks related to privacy and data use.

According to the Washington Post, a lawsuit against Facebook would spark another legal war between the US administration and Silicon Valley after the Justice Department and 11 states accused Google of violating antitrust laws in a case filed earlier this week.

Facebook said that with the agreement with FTC now in place, executive leaders at the company, including its CEO, will certify our compliance with it quarterly and annually to the FTC.

“We are also creating a new Privacy Committee on our Board of Directors that will be comprised solely of independent directors, and we’ll work with a third-party, independent assessor who will regularly and directly report to the Privacy Committee on our privacy program compliance,” Facebook informed.

K’taka healthcare warriors first to get Covid vaccine: Minister

0

Healthcare warriors, including doctors, nurses, and paramedics would be the first to get vaccinated for Covid immunity when introduced, said Karnataka Health Minister K. Sudhakar on Friday.

“Healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, paramedics and support staff in state-run and private hospitals will be the first beneficiaries of the vaccine when released by the central government,” said Sudhakar in a statement here.

The central government is preparing to introduce a proven vaccine across the country after its approval by its Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

“We are collecting data of healthcare workers as per guidelines and standard operating procedures of the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry,” said the minister, who is in charge of containing the pandemic in the state.

Noting that the central government would announce the launch date of the vaccine after its production was commenced, Sudhakar said other priority groups, including senior citizens and people with co-morbidities, would be vaccinated in a phased manner after the healthcare warriors.

“The state government will use the cold chain system of routine immunization under universal immunization program (UIP) for storing the vaccine when made available to the state by the Centre,” noted Sudhakar.

The cold chain facility for storing the vaccine will be made available in all the 30 districts across the southern state.

The healthcare warriors across the state also include ANMs (auxiliary nurse-midwives), ASHAs (accredited social health activists), Anganwadi workers, medical officers, scientists and research staff, and all those working in the healthcare sector.

“The state is undertaking IEC (information, education communication) activities through various fora to reach all the health facilities in government and private for timely data collection,” added Sudhakar.

All professional bodies, including IMA, PHANA, and IAP are being involved.

Immunization partners UNDP, WHO, and UNICEF will provide technical support to the state government in the initiative.

Past policy actions’ transmission to help ease conditions, RBI Guv in MPC meet

0

The ongoing transmission of past monetary policy actions would help ease financial conditions, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das had said during the Monetary Policy Committee meeting earlier this month, according to its minutes released on Friday.

The statement assumes significance as past rate cut transmission will provide lower interest rates which, in effect, is expected to trigger consumption and economic revival.

Besides, the Governor said that there exists space for future rate cuts if the inflation evolves in line with the expectations.

“This space needs to be used judiciously to support recovery in growth,” he said.

Das said that monetary policy at this stage has to provide adequate support to ensure a robust revival of the economy from the devastating effects of Covid-19, while at the same time, ensuring that any persistence of elevated inflation does not lead to unanchoring of inflation expectations.

“With the supply-side disruptions that are seen to drive the current inflationary pressures likely to be transient and wane out in months ahead as the economy normalizes, there is merit in looking through the current high levels of inflation and persevere with the accommodative stance for monetary policy as long as necessary to revive growth on a durable basis,” he said.

“Moreover, taking into account the projected moderation in inflation and the large output loss, I vote to keep the policy rate unchanged at present and continue with the accommodative stance, during the current financial year and into the next financial year, at the least. This would help to reduce uncertainty and market volatility. This would also enhance confidence in the monetary policy resolve to support the growth recovery process while ensuring that inflation remains within the target,” he added.

The penultimate meet of the MPC in 2020 was conducted from October 7 to 9.

The MPC decided to maintain the repo — or short-term lending — the rate for commercial banks at 4 percent on the back of persistently high inflation, fanned in part due to supply-side disruptions along with seasonal factors.

The meeting was attended by all the members, including Shashanka Bhide, Ashima Goyal, Jayanth R. Varma, Mridul K. Saggar, and Michael Debabrata Patra.

Besides, other members cited the need to support economic recovery.

In the meeting, RBI Deputy Governor Patra said that under these conditions, it is essential for monetary policy to remain accommodative and opportunistically exploit the headroom that opens up when inflation recedes, as it is projected in the second half of 2020-21.

“Three aspects need to be emphasized. First, it is important to separate false starts from durable growth drivers. In this context, all efforts need to be trained on the revival of investment. Second, in the evolving situation in which monetary policy is committed to an accommodative stance, it is necessary to monitor inflation dynamics closely for signs of generalization and persistence,” he said.

“For this purpose, all indicators of aggregate demand, including monetary and credit aggregates, warrant continuous examination for inflation impulses. Third, with unprecedented contractions in economic activity and elevated inflation posing a razor’s edge trade-off fraught with uncertainty, forward guidance has to be clear and decisive.”

Regarding inflation, Saggar said that inflation is currently above the upper tolerance band, it is not monetary in nature.

He pointed out supply disruption in food, increase in taxes on fuel and liquor, and the surge in gold prices “catalyzed by risk-off” has lifted inflation.

“In my view, headline inflation should start softening in October. Apart from favorable base effects, the unlocking has picked speed and would significantly reduce supply chain bottlenecks causing both agriculture and non-agricultural prices to correct,” he said.

“Monsoon risks to inflation have dissipated. Cumulative rainfall has been 9 percent above the long period average with its temporal and spatial distribution satisfactory. Area sown under Kharif has expanded by 4.8 percent. With the resumption of businesses by small poultry, high prices in protein items should witness some correction.”

On his part, Bhide said that there are clearly uncertainties facing the growth and inflation projections.

There is also uncertainty over the speed with which the Covid-19 pandemic is brought under control, which also affects growth and inflation scenarios in the next 2-3 quarters, he said.

“Towards the end of Q2, there are indications of a revival of the economy after the relaxation of restrictions on transportation and businesses across the country,” Bhide said.

“As supply chains adapt to the new conditions, recovery is expected to be stronger and sustained. To achieve this outcome, an accommodative monetary policy is needed at this juncture.”

Would have liked to bowl CSK out under 100: Pollard

0

Mumbai Indians’ (MI) stand-in captain Kieron Pollard said on Friday that they would have liked to bowl out Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for under 100 runs at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

CSK were 43/7 at one stage before Sam Curran’s 52 pushed them to 114/9. Openers Ishan Kishan and Quinton de Kock then ensured that MI won the match without losing a wicket and with a little under eight overs to spare.

“We wanted to bowl them out under 100 but Sam (Curran) batted well. Two-three wickets early on put you into the game. But to get four-five is fantastic. The openers finishing the job is also fantastic,” said Pollard, who captained MI on Friday in the absence of the injured Rohit Sharma.

MI goes back to the top of the table with the win and looks set for a finish in the top two of the table.

“We’re not speaking about it (finishing in the top two). It’s about putting yourself into positions to get two points and then think about that. It’s about improving as we go on and the rest will take care of itself. There’s always room for improvement. Things like lower-order batsmen getting off the strike when the main batsman is batting. That Super Over loss was disappointing but it’s about bouncing back,” he said.

CSK suffer first 10-wkt loss, Mumbai win and go atop

0

New Zealand speedster Trent Boult’s four-wicket haul and an unbeaten 116-run opening stand between Ishan Kishan and Quinton de Kock steered the reigning Mumbai Indians (MI) stroll to a 10-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Friday, and go atop the Indian Premier League (IPL) point table.

Going by their poor form — this was their first defeat by 10 wickets in IPL history — three-time champions CSK are virtually out, but they still have a mathematical chance of qualifying for the playoffs. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s team now has six points from 11 matches, out of which they have lost eight, and are now placed at the bottom of the eight-team table.

With Friday’s comprehensive win, three-time champions Mumbai have gone atop the table with 14 points. Although Delhi Capitals and Royals Challengers Bangalore also have 14 points, they are placed second and third respectively on net run rate.

After winning the toss, the MI bowlers came all gun blazing on a batting-friendly Sharjah track as they restricted their opponents to 114/9 wickets in 20 overs, thanks to Boult, who wreaked havoc with stunning figures of 4/18 from his quota of four overs.

Boult received able support from teammates Jasprit Bumrah and Rahul Chahar, who bagged two wickets each conceding 25 and 22 runs respectively.

The three-time champions, who suffered a batting collapse, had made as many as three changes in their playing XI. However, the decision backfired as just three of their batters — Sam Curran (52), Dhoni (16), and Shardul Thakur (11) — were able to touch the double-digit.

CSK lost their top six batsmen with just 30 runs on board. However, it was Curran’s patience with the bat which helped him notch-up up a half-century besides taking his side past the 100-run mark.

In return, MI openers Quinton de Kock (46 not out) and Ishan Kishan (68 not out) made light of the small target as their unbeaten 116-run stand drove the team home quite comfortably with 46 balls to spare.

The two-handed an ideal start to MI, taking their side to 52 runs in the initial six overs before adding another 46 runs in the next four overs to inch closer to victory. In the process, Kishan also completed his half-century off 29 balls.

de Kock put the final nail in the coffin, smashing Thakur for a boundary over square-leg to garner MI’s seventh win of the season.

The South African stumper’s innings contained five boundaries and a couple of sixes while Kishan’s knock was laced with six fours and five maximums.

Brief scores: CSK 114/9 wkts in 20 overs (Sam Curran 52, MS Dhoni 15; Trent Boult 4/18) lost to MI 116/0 wkt in 12.2 overs (Ishan Kishan 68 not out, Quinton de Kock 46 not out; Hazlewood 0/17) by 10 wkts.

Jagan asks banks to strengthen rural economy supporting schemes

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy urged banks to extend support in implementing the state government’s welfare schemes to strengthen the rural economy.

Ideal opportunity to try youngsters now: Dhoni after loss

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni on Friday admitted that his team’s chances of making it to the playoffs this season may have all but ended after their 10-wicket thrashing at the hands of Mumbai Indians on Friday, saying that the team would now be giving chances to players who haven’t played too many matches this season.

“I think it’s important for us to have a clear picture of next year. There are lots of ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ — what kind of auction we are looking for, where the venues will be. The coming three games will be an ideal opportunity to give platforms to players who have missed out. See some of the youngsters in preparation for the next year. A few more who are on the bench will get games in the coming three games,” said Dhoni after the match.

CSK were blown away by MI’s bowling attack led by Trent Boult with Sam Curran’s 52 draggings them to 114/9 wickets after which Ishan Kishan and Quinton de Kock ensured that they chase down the target without losing a wicket.

Dhoni said that the players have not done enough this season considering the kind of stats they have accrued over the course of their careers. CSK had incidentally started the season with a comfortable margin of five wickets.

“What you need to see is where we actually went wrong, right from the second game. It was more about the bowling and the batting was not turning up. [Ambati] Rayudu got injured, the other batsman were maybe not able to perform,” said Dhoni.

“Whenever we don’t get off to a good start, it puts pressure on the middle order. In cricket when you’re going through a tough phase, you need a bit of luck which hasn’t happened this year. The games we wanted to bat first, we haven’t won the toss, and there’s no dew, and all of a sudden when we bat first there’s dew.”

With his father and former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad away from the Bihar Assembly elections for the first time in over 40 years, his son and RJD leader Tejashwi has stepped in effortlessly in the former’s shoes to spearhead his party’s campaign.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader on Friday shared the stage at a public rally with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in His in Nawada district, the latter’s first rally for the Grand Alliance in the poll-bound state.

Tejashwi has attracted attention with the kind of crowds he is pulling to his election rallies in Bihar, creating a niche while addressing about a dozen-odd rally daily in Bihar. Needless to say, the stakes are high for the Grand Alliance and still higher for the RJD to dominate Bihar politics once again.

Tejashwi, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing Assembly, is the RJD face on party posters and campaigns. He is attacking Chief Minister Nitish Kumar — once an ally of his jailed father — at his public rallies.

“Though the Janata Dal-United is in power for more than 13 years, the balance is now tilting towards the RJD-led alliance,” remarked a party leader.

Even though RJD has arrayed 30-star campaigners, only Tejashwi is seen campaigning on the ground ahead of the three-phase elections. Party campaign managers say that Tejashwi would end up addressing more than 200 rallies as he is in high demand.

RJD leader Manoj Jha said: “The issues raised by Tejashwi at his public rallies are getting high traction among the people of Bihar and pushed the NDA on the back foot.”

Though party leaders “miss” the presence of Lalu Prasad, known for his oratorical skills, but maintain that even Tejashwi has given the nightmares to the NDA leaders that they did not expect from a young leader.

Tejashwi brings up the issue of jobs during his speeches since he knows the craze for government jobs in the state. His party has promised 10 lakh jobs to the Bihar youths in case it returns to power.

Analysts feel after the migrant crisis during coronavirus lockdown and the promise of 10 lakh jobs have managed to draw huge crowds to the RJD election rallies.
