Bala Devi returns to footballing action for Rangers FC in Scotland

0

Indian women’s national football team forward Bala Devi had decided to stay back in Glasgow, Scotland during the worldwide lockdown enforced by the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, however, the 30-year-old is back on the field as the Scottish Women’s Premier League resumed on October 18.

Rangers Women FC got off to a flying start with a 5-1 victory over SWPL side Hearts on Sunday as Bala also made her return to the pitch, coming on as a second-half substitute.

“It was really good to be back on the football pitch once again. Being away from the pitch for so many months is not a good feeling,” Bala told the-aiff.com.

“But all those months of hard work paid off, and we have now started off with a win but this is only the start of a long season ahead,” she added.

Bala had been training for the Rangers for around two months ahead of her first post-pandemic game against Hearts Women FC.

However, it has not always been an easy time at her new home in the British Isles.

“The first month I was feeling quite lonely because all the other players went home as they were from nearby areas — or at least from somewhere in the UK or the neighboring countries. It was just a few others and myself that actually stayed back,” said Bala.

“But I kept in touch with everyone and that helped. The coaches also took good care of me. They even took me out shopping once the lockdown was over. These are very small things in the larger scheme of things, but they do help lighten your spirits,” she added.

The mercurial India striker feels that the months she spent in self-isolation gave her a new perspective on how to do things.

“That time really taught me how we should be ready for different situations in life. We never know what may happen. A few years back, I would have laughed if anyone had told me that all major global activities would come to a standstill for a few months. But that is what happened,” she said.

“We should all be ready to adjust ourselves according to the problems that life throws at us. If we are flexible, we can maneuver our way through anything. Take everything into your stride and be the best that you can in any given situation,” she added.

Uber India introduces mask verification selfie for riders too

0

Ride-hailing major Uber on Monday introduced a new safety policy which will request riders, who have been tagged for not wearing masks on a previous trip, to take a selfie which shows them wearing a mask, in order to book their next trip.

The move comes after Uber earlier this year built technology designed to verify that drivers on the platform are wearing a mask while on-trip, by clicking a selfie.

Since Uber began mask verification selfies for drivers in May 2020, more than 17.44 million verifications have been carried out throughout India.

This new feature aims to ensure that feedback received from drivers can help make the platform safer for the next user.

“At Uber, we believe accountability is a two-way street. Earlier this year, we designed innovative technology to ensure that drivers were actually wearing masks before accepting trips,” Pavan Vaish, Head of Supply & Driver Operations, Uber India and South Asia, said in a statement.

“Today, we’ve devised similar technology for riders who’ve previously been called out for not wearing a mask while on-trip. Our new policy raises the bar on safety and makes our platform safer not just for you, but for the next rider and driver as well.”

Over the past few months, Uber has launched a slew of safety measures, such as the Go Online Checklist and a mandatory mask policy for riders, pre-trip mask verification selfies for drivers, and mandatory driver education around Covid-19 related safety protocols.

Riders and drivers can also cancel a trip, without penalty, if the other person is not wearing a mask.

Uber said it is distributing over three million masks and 200,000 bottles of disinfectants and sanitizers to drivers, free of cost.

Shoaib Malik left out of Pakistan squad for Zimbabwe series

Veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik has been left out of the Pakistan squad for the upcoming ODI and T20I series against Zimbabwe beginning October 30.

Pakistan have not played ODIs since the home series against Sri Lanka 12 months ago and the three-match ODI series in Rawalpindi — to be played on October 30, November 1, and 3 — will be part of the World Cup Super League from which the seven top-ranked sides, apart from hosts India, will qualify directly for the 2023 World Cup.

Malik, who was a player of the final in the National T20 Cup on Sunday evening, has made way for Abdullah Shafiq, while Rohail Nazir has been named Mohammad Rizwan’s back-up wicketkeeper. Sarfaraz Ahmed, who was part of the squad for the England tour, has been encouraged to feature in the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, starting October 25, so that he rediscovers better form ahead of the New Zealand tour, stated Pakistan Cricket Board in a media release.

“Seniors like Shoaib Malik and Sarfaraz Ahmed have not been picked for this series, but I want to categorically state that their careers are not over by any means as performance remains the only criterion for selection,” Pakistan head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq said.

“These are strategic decisions as Shoaib’s absence will provide players like Abdullah Shafiq, Haider Ali and Khushdil Shah better chances of featuring in the upcoming matches,” he added.

The probables will assemble in Lahore on October 21 for Covid-19 testing and after observing a five-day isolation period, during which they will play two 50-over matches at the Gaddafi Stadium, will travel to Rawalpindi on October 26.

The probables for three T20Is — to be played on November 7, 8, and 10 — will be shortlisted after the ODIs, and players unlikely to feature in them will be advised to play in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy third-round matches, which will commence from 6 November.

Pakistan probables for ODIs and T20Is: Babar Azam (captain), Shadab Khan (vice-captain), Abdullah Shafiq, Abid Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haider Ali, Haris Rauf, Haris Sohail, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Imam-ul-Haq, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Rizwan, Musa Khan, Rohail Nazir, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Usman Qadir, Wahab Riaz, and Zafar Gohar

ED summons to Farooq creates flutter in J&K’s political circles

0

The summoning of National Conference (NC) president, Dr. Farooq Abdullah for questioning by the Enforcement Directorate(ED) on Monday has created quite a flutter in the political circles of Jammu and Kashmir.

Reacting to the ED summons to his father, Omar Abdullah, former chief minister, took to Twitter, “The party will be responding to this ED summon shortly. This is nothing less than political vendetta coming days after the formation of the People’s Alliance for the Gupkar Declaration.

“To set the record straight, no raids are being conducted at Dr. Sahib’s residence”.

In her reaction to the development, former chief minister and chief of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti said, “ED’s sudden summons to Farooq Sahab displays the extent of GOI’s nervousness about mainstream parties in J&K fighting as one unit.”

“Also reeks of political vendetta & won’t in the least blunt our collective resolve to fight for our rights “.

Sajad Lone, whose People’s Conference (PC) is also part of the six-party Gupkar alliance that seeks restoration of J&K’s special status, said in his reaction, “What a sorry state of affairs. Dr. Farooq Sahib summoned by ED. Reeks of vendetta. Contrary to what they want to coercively achieve this will certainly have the opposite impact”.

ED officials on Monday summoned Dr. Abdullah to their office in uptown Rajbagh locality of Srinagar city for questioning in the Rs 113 crore scam allegedly carried out when Dr. Abdullah was the chairman of the J&K Cricket Association.

SC to Maha govt: Can Nanded Gurudwara procession be held at 5 a.m.?

0

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Maharashtra government to examine whether the Nanded Gurudwara can be allowed to hold Dussehra festivities and the Guru Granth Sahib procession at 5 a.m., with limited gathering.

A vacation bench comprising Justices L. Nageswara Rao, Hemant Gupta, and Ajay Rastogi said the Maharashtra state disaster management authority (SDMA) should take decision in the matter in the backdrop of the Covid-19 scenario.

The order has come on a plea filed by the Nanded Sikh Gurudwara Sachkhand Shri Hazur Abchalnagar Sahib Board, which sought permission for Dussehra, Takht Isnan, Deepmala, and Gurta Gaddi events. The board cited these events are three centuries-old custom maintained by the Gurudwara.

Advocate Praveen Chaturvedi, representing the petitioner, contended the state government has already allowed marriages with 50 people in attendance, and his client is not asking for public participation instead of the procession, on a limited route, can be allowed with 40 to 50 people.

The bench queried who will control if the procession is on the road?

The bench noted that the state government is saying there is a health risk in the backdrop of people affected in Nanded and added that in Puri there were restrictions but many people turned up.

Chaturvedi further clarified that his client has reduced the procession route to 1.5 km and they will use a truck on which Granth Sahib will be kept and the proceedings will be live telecast.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, cited the MHA August 29 order which allowed religious/political/social functions from September 21 and September 30 guidelines allowing the gathering of up to 100 persons outside containment zones subject to conditions.

Mehta suggested that the procession be 1.5km, they could consider holding it between 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., so that people other than those participating in the ritual are not involved.

The top court also asked the state government whether it could impose a curfew-like the one which was imposed in Puri for the Jagannath Yatra procession.

The Maharashtra government in its affidavit has informed the top court that Dussehra procession will not be a “practically feasible option” amid COVID-19, as it has hit the state worst, and the government has taken a conscious decision to not allow religious functions.

The bench said would giving permission to one festival will lead to giving permission to others? Mehta said this was not a festival celebrated across Maharashtra, rather it is only restricted to Nanded and also to in a community with small numbers.

The Maharashtra government counsel said the state is genuinely concerned regarding public health, which is a state subject. The council added that the government’s experience has shown that these 50-60 people congregation is not possible, as a greater number of people will turn up and added the government did not permit even the popular Ganapathi festival procession.

Concluding the hearing, the bench asked the state government can’t you have the procession at 5 a.m.?

The Maharashtra government counsel replied the petitioner should file a representation before the state disaster management authority. The bench noted that it was something where the court cannot interfere, especially when the state is saying it is difficult.

The bench asked the SDMA to decide on the representation by the Nanded gurudwara management board by Tuesday and told the petitioner they can move the Bombay High Court, if not satisfied.

Twitter resolves geotag issue after showing J&K as part of China

0

After courting controversy for wrongly showing Jammu and Kashmir as part of China, Twitter on Monday said it has resolved the issue.

“We became aware of this technical issue on Sunday, and understand and respect the sensitivities around it. The teams have worked swiftly to investigate and resolve the concerned geotag issue,” a Twitter spokesperson told IANS in a statement.

The issue was first brought to attention by national security analyst Nitin Gokhale after he went live on Twitter from Hall of Fame, a war memorial at Leh.

Gokhale went live on Twitter to tell people about his experience of reaching Ladakh from Himachal Pradesh through a new route. After completing the program, he discovered that the location of the war memorial at Leh was shown as “Jammu and Kashmir, People’s Republic of China.”

“Twitter folks, I just did life from Hall of Fame. Giving Hall of Fame as the location and guess what it is saying Jammu & Kashmir, Peoples Republic of China! Are you guys nuts?” Gokhale said in a tweet.

The matter was later also raised by Kanchan Gupta, Distinguished Fellow, Observer Research Foundation (ORF) after tweets showed J&K as a part of China.

“So @Twitter has decided to reconfigure geography and declare Jammu & Kashmir as part of the People’s Republic of #China. If this is not a violation of #India laws, what is? Citizens of India have been punished for far less. But US Big Tech is above the law?” Gupta wrote tagging Telecom and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Several netizens also asked Prasad and the government to take action against Twitter India.

The controversy erupted amid India’s border standoff with China in Ladakh.

PM lauds more enrollment of girls in higher education

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday lauded more enrollment of girls in higher education, especially in professional courses like engineering and medicine.

“I am glad to learn more girls are enrolling for higher education, which augurs well for the country’s development. In IITs (Indian Institute of Technology), their (girls) enrollment has gone up to 30 percent in 6 years from 8 percent in 2014,” said Modi in Hindi while delivering the centenary convocation address of the University of Mysore through a virtual model from New Delhi.

Modi also hailed the century-old university for having more young women graduating in higher education than young men.

Advising the university’s faculty and students to become more innovative, the Prime Minister said the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 would help them to become more competitive in multi-disciplinary programs.

“It is for the first time in the country such sweeping reforms in the education field has been ushered in for multiple sectors such as incubation, technology development, industry-academic linkage, and inter-disciplinary subjects,” said Modi.

Exhorting the students to strive for excellence, Modi advised them to think out of box ideas, especially in the area of start-ups for achieving self-reliance (atmanribhar) in diverse areas.

“The NEP will bring about fundamental changes in the education set up from pre-nursery to Ph.D. (research), as the need of the hour is for a multi-dimensional approach to become globally competitive and locally productive,” said Modi in his 25-minute address.

Noting that skilling, reskilling and upskilling were the need of the day, the Prime Minister the NEP would focus in imparting them to the workforce.

“In the last 6-7 months, the speed and ambit of reforms have been expanded. Changes are being made for rapid growth and development,” said Modi.

Asserting that NEP was a major initiative to bring a fundamental change in the education set-up across the country, the prime minister said to make capable youth more competitive, a multi-dimensional approach was being focussed on.

“The effort is to make youth flexible and adaptable for changing nature of the job,” he stressed.

In the last 5-6 years, 7 new IIMs have been added to the 13 IIMs. While only 7 AIIMS was serving the people over the last 6 decades, their number has been increased to 15 since 2014.

Similarly, there were only 16 IITs since independence until 2014. In the last 6 years, one IIT has been set up every year across the country, including one at Dharwad in Karnataka.

“Now you are stepping out of a formal university campus to enter a real-life university campus where you will be able to apply what you learned for the degree,” Modi told the graduating students.

Karnataka Governor and university chancellor Vajubhai Vala presided over the convocation.

State Deputy Chief Minister C.N. Ashwath Narayan, who is also the higher education minister, and university Vice-Chancellor G. Hemantha Kumar were present on the occasion.

The Crawford Hall premises where the convocation was held was sanitized ahead of the event and seating arrangements were made for only 100 dignitaries, including 30 gold medal winners in view of the Covid-induced restrictions on large public gatherings to contain the pandemic spread.

Set up way back in 1916, the university was the sixth across the country and the first in Karnataka. It was the sixth university in the country and first in Karnataka.

The University was founded by the Mysore erstwhile princely state Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar and then Diwan Sir M.V. Visvesvaraya.

OMCs hold petrol, diesel prices as global oil market remains subdued

0

Oil marketing companies (OMC) kept petrol and diesel prices unchanged across the four metros on Monday as global oil prices remained subdued and product prices remained steady.

Petrol prices have been unchanged for 27 days at a stretch while diesel prices were the same for the 17 consecutive days.

The price of petrol in the national capital was at Rs 81.06 per liter. In Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata, the fuel was sold for Rs 87.74, Rs 84.14, and Rs 82.59 per liter, respectively.

Diesel prices in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata were at Rs 70.46, Rs 76.86, Rs 75.95, and Rs 73.99, respectively.

Domestic fuel prices have been largely subdued off late due to low crude oil prices as global oil demand has been hit amid the pandemic.

Retail sales, however, have picked up with the gradual reopening of the economic activities. First time since lockdown, diesel sale in the country has crossed over the pre-covid level with the country’s most widely consumed fuel witnessing a nine percent year-on-year growth in the first 15 days of October.

The surge in demand after months of subdued sales is the direct result of an increase in the transport activities ahead of the festival season as consumers move out to make those necessary purchases.

According to official sources, during the first fortnight of October, diesel sales increased by 9 percent (YoY) to reach 2.65 million tonnes. The growth is even more significant at close to 25 percent in relation to the previous month of September.

In the first 15 days of October, petrol sales also rose, but substantially lower at 1.5 percent to close to one million tonnes.

IPL: DC bring in Pravin Dubey as replacement for Amit Mishra

0

Delhi Capitals on Monday announced the signing of 27-year-old leg spinner Pravin Dubey as a replacement for veteran leg-spinner Amit Mishra for the remaining matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Karnataka-based Dubey has played 14 domestic T20 matches for his state, and has 16 wickets to his name, with an economy rate of 6.87.

Mishra has ruled out the tournament after sustaining an injury to the ring finger of his bowling arm during Delhi Capitals’ match against Kolkata Knight Riders in Sharjah on October 3. The 37-year-old has undergone surgery and is recovering at the moment.

Mishra, who has three hat-tricks in IPL, played three games this season, picking three wickets.

“I never expected the injury would be this serious. I thought it would be for a match or two but have to accept it,” Mishra, who has bagged 160 IPL wickets, the second-highest in the league history, had told IANS.

“The fact that I got injured while playing — trying to catch the ball — giving my 100 percent is a bit satisfying. It is not an injury related to fitness which means I am doing fine,” he added.

Delhi Capitals, sitting pretty at the top of the points table with 14 points, will next face Kings XI Punjab on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi.

We’re working on rebuilding our game, fitness: Savita

Savita, the vice-captain of the Indian women’s hockey team, has stated they had come prepared for a long camp when they returned to the Sports Authority of India facility following a six-week break in August.

“When we returned to SAI Bengaluru from a six-week break in August, we had come prepared for a long camp. This is good because we will get good continuity in our regime and we are working on rebuilding our game, fitness, etc,” Savita said.

“The team is grateful to Hockey India and SAI for ensuring our preparations for the Olympic Games is unaffected despite the on-going battle with the pandemic. As players, we are taking several precautions during practice schedules, following the SOPs and we are taking extra care about ourselves too, in terms of recovery, rest, etc in order to avoid injuries,” she added.

The team will begin their Olympic campaign against World Champions Netherlands next year in Tokyo. Though India has not faced the Dutch team in any major tournament in the recent past, they are very aware of how the team plays.

With both chief coach Sjoerd Marijne as well as analytical coach Janneke Schopman from the Netherlands, the duo is well-versed with the playing style of the Dutch national team.

“We have not played Netherlands national team in the recent past but we follow their matches closely and we end up talking to coaches Sjoerd and Janneke about the team’s playing style,” Savita said.

“Since both coaches are from the Netherlands, they have a lot of knowledge about how the team plays. The Netherlands is undoubtedly aggressive and tactically very sound. Our first match at the Olympics will surely be challenging,” she added.

In the upcoming FIH Hockey Pro League matches scheduled for 27 and 29 October in Amsterdam, the Netherlands will take on Great Britain.

“Both are very strong teams and it will be very exciting to watch them in action. I feel both matches will be quite closely fought. It will be interesting to see how both teams fair especially after not having played high-intensity matches in a long time due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We as a team will definitely be following these matches closely as it will provide great insights into their game,” Savita said.

iPhone 12 sales may be highest since iPhone 6: Taiwanese carriers

Taiwanese carriers have forecast that Apple’s latest iPhone 12 series will have stronger sales than the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

According to Economic Daily News, Apple suppliers Foxconn and Pegatron are offering workers on the assembly line increased bonuses in order to keep up with the strong demand for devices, following pre-orders for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.

“Earlier this week, Taiwanese carriers reportedly sold out of iPhone 12 pre-orders in 45 minutes, though it is unclear if there was limited stock,” the report mentioned.

Introduced in 2014, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were extremely popular thanks to their larger 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays, helping Apple sell a record 135.6 million iPhones in the two quarters after the devices launched.

Apple has launched four new iPhone 12 models with 5G capability.

The tech giant is expected to witness 15 percent iPhone growth next fiscal year and the primary wave of Apple 5G telephones has placed the ball in carriers and builders’ court, research-driven the US venture capital firm Loup Ventures has to forecast.

According to a report in DigiTimes, Apple iPhone 12 series shipments are expected to reach as many as 80 million units by the end of the year owing to a more affordable pricing strategy.

Foxconn remains Apple’s main iPhone assembler and has secured the bulk of orders for the new iPhone 12 series through the first quarter of 2021.

Congenital heart defects not linked to severe Covid symptoms

0

People born with heart defects had a lower-than-expected risk of developing moderate or severe Covid-19 symptoms, according to a study of more than 7,000 patients.

Congenital heart defects are present at birth and can affect the structure of a baby’s heart and the way it works, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Throughout the course of the pandemic, evidence has shown that individuals with heart disease have a higher risk of life-threatening illness and complications from Covid-19.

But the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on individuals with congenital heart defects, who are generally younger than those with adult-onset heart disease, was unknown.

“At the beginning of the pandemic, many feared that congenital heart disease would be as big a risk factor for severe Covid-19 as adult-onset cardiovascular disease,” said co-leader of the study Matthew Lewis, Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York.

“We were reassured by the low number of congenital heart patients who required hospitalization for Covid-19 and the relatively good outcomes of these patients.”

Only 53 congenital heart patients (43 adults and 10 children) – less than 0.8 percent of patients at Columbia’s congenital heart center – presented to their physician with symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection from March through June, showed the findings published in the journal JAHA.

More than 80 percent of these patients had mild symptoms. Of the nine patients who developed moderate to severe symptoms, three died.

During the study period, an estimated 20 percent of people in the New York metropolitan area are thought to have been infected with the coronavirus.

Another study performed at Columbia University Irving Medical Center during the same period found that roughly 22 percent of hospitalized patients from the general population became critically ill and about one-third of those patients died.

In the new study, the researchers found that patients with a genetic syndrome and adults with the advanced disease from their congenital heart defect were more likely to develop moderate to severe symptoms, though an individual’s type of congenital heart defect did not impact symptoms severity.

Though the study sample was small, the researchers concluded that congenital heart disease alone may not be enough to increase the risk of severe COVID-19 symptoms.

It is unlikely that people with congenital heart disease have an intrinsically lower risk of becoming severely ill from the new coronavirus.

The researchers hypothesized that the patients in this study may have adhered more strictly to social distancing guidelines compared with the general population, given the publicity about increased COVID-19 risk in patients with heart disease.
