Bigg Boss 14 housemate Rahul Vaidya: B’wood singers not paid for film recordings

Bollywood playback star Neha Kakkar recently made a shocking revelation about singers not being paid in the Hindi film industry while speaking to IANS. Now, Rahul Vaidya has made similar allegations.

Rahul, who is currently a housemate on “Bigg Boss 14”, shared that singers indeed don’t get paid for film recordings.

In April, Neha told us: “We do not get paid for singing in Bollywood at all. What happens is they feel that if we give a superhit song, the singer will earn through shows. I get a good amount from live concerts and everything, but Bollywood does not have this scene. To make us sing a song, they do not pay.”

Her contention had been backed by singer Aditya Narayan. Singers, Aditya told us, don’t get a “single penny” in Bollywood and that there is a “pandemic in the music industry”.

Now, Rahul makes the same revelation.

“It’s a very subjective decision but yes it is correct that singers are not paid for film recordings, and I don’t want to shy away from that fact. But yes, at the same time singers make tonnes of money from their live performances,” Rahul told IANS.

He points out that an “unsaid understanding” has developed between the producers and composers on one side and the singers.

“They tell us we make a lot of money from shows, so (they don’t pay for film recordings of the songs). The idea is technically wrong. It is like telling an actor that you don’t charge for films because you would get money from endorsements. How does that make sense? It is technically wrong,” he pointed out.

KKR’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy finally delivers

0

It is not just the fast bowlers who hunt in pairs. In T20 cricket or Indian Premier League (IPL) to be precise, bowlers with mystery spin to hunt in pairs.

The art of bowling mystery spin had long been the forte of Sunil Narine at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). But youngster Varun Chakravarthy is fast catching up.

On Wednesday against Chennai Super Kings, Chakravarthy helped turn the game around for KKR by removing MS Dhoni with a delivery that was shaping up to be a leg-break but went straight on as the India legend went down to slog-sweep him to the boundary. CSK was in the game at that stage needing 39 off 22 balls before Dhoni fell. Chakravarthy, a leg-spinner, then bowled three dot balls to increase the required run rate before CSK succumbed to pressure and fell short of the target by 10 runs at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

The Tamil Nadu leg-spinner, who has got a second wind this IPL season after missing the last season — his first — due to an injury, may soon snatch away the role of the lead spinner from Narine at KKR.

In an earlier game against Delhi Capitals, he had proved his worth, taking a wicket and conceding just 13 in the two powerplay overs at the Sharjah ground that has small boundaries. In contrast, the Trinidadian conceded 15 in the only over he bowled in the phase. Narine though bowled well against CSK.

Although Chakravarthy has picked just five wickets in four games — giving away runs at just over eight, it is the manner in which he has scalped his victims that has caught the eye. He is, through his performance, proving he is worth the Rs 4 crore that KKR has shelled out on him.

Last year, the 29-year-old earned a whopping Rs 8.4 crore from Kings XI Punjab on the back of his performances in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) but was later laid low by the injury. He could play just one game in last year’s edition. This year, he is back, but in different colors and his wickets will only add to his reputation.

A few wickets by him this season show how good he has been. Against SunRisers Hyderabad, he deceived David Warner with a delivery that went straight on despite the delivery shaping up like a leg-break. Then, against Rajasthan Royals, he got rid of Rahul Tewatia with a googly that turned sharply from the leg and pegged back the middle-stump. Against Delhi Capitals, he bowled a top-spinner with a leg-cutter grip.

Chakravarthy possesses a leg-break, a carrom ball, off-spinner, flipper, and top-spinner in his repertoire. While most leg-spinners have variety, deception and bounce make him a bit different from others on the Indian circuit.

Former SA pacer Vernon Philander’s brother shot dead

0

The younger brother of former South Africa fast bowler Vernon Philander has been shot dead near his home in Cape Town.

According to media reports, Tyrone Philander, 32, was delivering water to a neighbor in Ravensmead on Wednesday afternoon when he was gunned down. Police have confirmed that they were investigating a murder and the shooter was still on the run, The South African reports.

Vernon, who bowed out of international cricket this year, thanked the public for their messages of support.

“Our family is coming to terms with the brutal murder in my hometown of Ravensmead earlier today. I would like to ask that the family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time,” he said in a statement on Twitter.

“The murder is now the subject of a police investigation and we respectfully ask that the media give the police the space to conduct a thorough investigation. There are no details about the incident at the moment and speculation will make it very difficult for us as a family to mourn in peace. Tyrone is forever in our hearts. May his soul rest in peace,” he added.

Philander announced his retirement from international cricket following last winter’s series against England. He played 64 Tests, 30 ODIs, and seven T20Is in which he scalped 224, 41, and 4 wickets respectively.

Sony leads smartphone image sensor market in 2020 1st half

0

Sony captured the top position in the smartphone image sensor market in the first half this year with a 44 percent revenue share, followed by Samsung Electronics and OmniVision Technologies, a new report said on Thursday.

The global smartphone Image sensor market led by Sony reached a total revenue of $6.3 billion in the first half of 2020, according to a report by market research firm Strategy Analytics.

The total smartphone image sensor market witnessed a 15 percent year-over-year revenue growth in H1 2020.

Samsung remained second in the global smartphone image sensor market with a 32 percent revenue share.

Chinese-owned OmniVision Technologies came in third with 9 percent.

“The image sensor market was driven by the upbeat demand for multi-camera configuration featuring 2MP and 8MP image sensors in smartphones and further boosted by the shipment of high pixel sensors such as 64MP and 108MP image sensors in H1 2020,” said Jeffrey Mathews, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics.

The image sensor market growth was slowed by the impact of the pandemic on the overall smartphone market.

However, the momentum around high pixel sensors and the use of multiple cameras in smartphones is expected to shape a strong growth path for the image sensor market in H2 2020.

With a fresh spike of 78,524 coronavirus cases and 971 deaths in 24 hours, India’s tally on Thursday went past the 68-lakh-mark with a total of 68,35,655 cases.

Out of these, 9,02,425 are currently active; 58,27,704 have been discharged, while 1,05,526 have lost the battle against the pandemic.

The recovery rate stands at 85.02 percent and the fatality rate at 1.55 percent, the data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.

On Tuesday, India recorded a spike of 61,267, which was the lowest since August. But on Wednesday it again recorded 72,049 cases.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit with a total of 14,80,489 cases, including 39,072 deaths; followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi.

Chris Gayle: Music comes naturally to me

West Indies cricket superstar Chris Gayle sure has a career alternative now. He is out making a mark in the world of music, and a new track he has collaborated on as a rapper has already crossed one million views on YouTube. Gayle tells you music comes naturally to him.

One of the most destructive batsmen in limited-overs cricket, Gayle prefers calling himself an entertainer. Fondly known as the Universe Boss, he says music is something he finds very enjoyable.

“I find it very enjoyable. I’ve grown up surrounded by music and sport – it’s a big part of our Jamaican culture and it’s in our blood,” Gayle told IANS.

He recently collaborated with British Indian singer Avina Shah for a dance track titled “Groove” as a rapper.

“I was excited about doing this project and creating a song that anyone can listen and groove to — it is an international sound with a mix of Jamaica, India, and the UK,” said Gayle.

“We really enjoyed putting this song together and managed to put it together in a very short space of time. It was all done over the phone — a lot of WhatsApp messages back and forth to plan it out, but it worked out perfectly,” he added.

After shooting for the music video in Jamaica, Gayle flew to Dubai for the Indian Premier League. He recalls using the lockdown period to polish his singing skills.

“I released a remix song with Stylo G called ‘Too hot’ during the lockdown, and now this (‘Groove’) is my first collaboration with a female artist. I had fun making this track and the response has been really great,” said Gayle.

Clearly, he is serious about his musical plans. “I’ve also just set up my music label, so we plan to launch more songs in the near future in various genres,” he informed.

Facebook bans ‘militarised calls’ for poll watching

0

Facebook has banned calls for people to engage in poll-watching when those calls use militarised language or suggest that the goal is to intimidate, exert control, or display power over elected officials or voters, as it prepares for the US presidential election with a unique set of products and policies in the final stretch.

Getting the final election results this year may take longer than previous elections due to the pandemic and more people voting by mail.

Guy Rosen, VP, Integrity at Facebook said on Wednesday that the social network has prepared a range of policies and products to keep people informed and prevent the spread of misinformation.

“For example, when polls close, we will run a notification at the top of Facebook and Instagram and apply labels to candidates’ posts directing people to the Voting Information Centre for more information about the vote-counting process,” Rosen explained.

If a candidate or party declares premature victory before a race is called by major media outlets, “we will add more specific information in the notifications that counting is still in progress and no winner has been determined”.

If the candidate that is declared the winner by major media outlets is contested by another candidate or party, Facebook will show the name of the declared winning candidate with notifications at the top of its main app and Instagram, as well as label posts from presidential candidates, with the declared winner’s name and a link to the Voting Information Centre.

Facebook said that it has worked on more than 200 elections around the globe since the 2016 US presidential election, and now has more than 35,000 people across the company working on safety and security issues.

“Despite this progress, we’re not taking our eye off the ball,” Rosen said.

“With just under a month until Election Day, we’re encouraging more people to enroll in Facebook Protect by running a notification at the top of Facebook this week to Page admins for government officials, campaigns, political parties, and others,” he added.

NZ’s domestic season in new normal set to resume from Oct 19

0

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced on Thursday that Plunket Shield will begin the country’s home summer on October 19, followed by the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield for Women, Ford Trophy, and Super Smash. The three venues which will host all the matches are Eden Park, Seddon Park, and Basin Reserve.

NZC has also adopted the majority of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Covid-19 regulations, which have been put in place to stem the spread of novel coronavirus. Saliva and sweat ban, player replacements for those showing Covid-19 symptoms, and forbidding players handing over caps to the umpires are among the pointers mentioned in the guidelines.

“This means New Zealand domestic players will not be permitted to use saliva to shine the ball, and umpires will no longer hold the players’ caps or other items of clothing,” said NZC Head of Cricket Operations, Richard Brewer.

“These measures will be overseen by the match referee and match officials, and have already been successfully piloted in pre-season warm-up fixtures between domestic men’s sides,” he added.

Brewer said there would be a “three-strike” rule, where teams were warned if they accidentally used saliva to polish the ball. A five-run penalty would then be enforced if it happened a third time.

Four rounds of Plunket Shield will be played before Christmas after which teams will switch to white-ball cricket in the Ford Trophy and Super Smash. In a change from the past two seasons, the centralized rounds have been replaced by teams playing each other twice in the space of three days at each host venue.

Other than the six players competing in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 in the United Arab Emirates, all of NZC’s contracted Black Caps will turn out for their domestic teams for the first half of the Plunket Shield.

Black Caps captain Kane Williamson, Jimmy Neesham, Lockie Ferguson, Mitchell Santner, and Trent Boult are featuring in the IPL, as is former New Zealand pace bowler Mitchell McClenaghan.

Djokovic, Kvitova enter French Open semis

0

Novak Djokovic and Petra Kvitova have entered the semifinals on the ongoing French Open after registering contrasting wins in their respective quarterfinal matches.

In the men’s singles event, Djokovic, despite visibly struggling with his left arm early on Wednesday evening, defeated Pablo Carreno Busta 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 in three hours and 10 minutes to make it to his 10th semi-final at the Roland Garros.

“Well, I definitely didn’t feel great coming into the court today,” the Serbian admitted after the match. “Few things happened in the warm-up. I had to deal with those physical issues coming onto the court. As the match went on, I felt better, didn’t feel as much pain.”

“But I don’t want to take away anything from his good performance. Especially for a set and a half he was the better player, dictating the play. I was very neutral. I didn’t have much energy really happening in my legs or movement or game itself,” he added.

The world number one will next face Stefanos Tsitsipas, who ousted Hamburg European Open champion Andrey Rublev in straight sets.

In other men’s singles semifinal, 12-time champion Rafael Nadal will lock horns with Diego Schwartzman.

Meanwhile, in the women’s singles event, Kvitova booked her place in the last four following a 6-3, 6-3 win over Laura Siegemund in 78 minutes.

The seventh seed, who is yet to drop a set this fortnight, was impressive against Siegemund as she claimed 77 percent of her first-serve points and converted five of 10 breakpoints.

“I think I’m still the same clay player as I was before, but I just think that I find those conditions here and I’m still mentally tough,” Kvitova said. “I mean, I played indoor, outdoor, sun, wind, whatever, rain, whatever happens… I think eight years ago I think it was everything, you know, kind of (the) same, same weather.”

Kvitova will face this year’s Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin for a place in a maiden Roland-Garros final.

In other semifinals, Argentine qualifier Nadia Podoroska, who had defeated third seed Elina Svitolina, will compete against Polish teenager Iga Swiatek.

KL continues to hold Orange Cap, Purple stays with Rabada

0

Kings XI Punjab captain KL Rahul and Delhi Capitals fast bowler Kagiso Rabada continue to lead the respective charts for leading run-scorers and wicket-takers in the ongoing Indian Premier League season following the conclusion of the 21st IPL 2020 match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings which the Dinesh Karthik-led side won by 10 runs.

Rahul has scored 302 runs — including one hundred and two half-centuries — in five matches so far and has the Orange Cap. He is followed by Chennai Super Kings’ Faf du Plessis who has 299 runs to his name from six games. Kings XI opener Mayank Agarwal is third on the list with 272 runs.

In the bowlers’ list, Rabada has 12 wickets from five games and holds the Purple Cap. He is followed by Jasprit Bumrah, who has 11 wickets in six games. Bumrah’s teammate Trent Boult is third on the list with 10 wickets from six matches.

These running caps are presented to the leading run-scorer and wicket-taker and keep changing hands throughout the duration of the tournament.

In the points table, Mumbai Indians currently occupy the number one spot with eight points from six games. They are followed by Delhi Capitals who also have eight points but a lower net run-rate compared to the defending champions. Kolkata Knight Riders and Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore are next in line, having six points each from five games.

Mumbai residents can view Covid containment zones in Google Maps

0

Google on Thursday launched a new feature in the Covid-19 layer on Maps that displays the demarcation of containment zones in Mumbai.

Google said it is working closely with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for sourcing this information and will update this data regularly.

As people and businesses emerge from the lockdown, access to clear information about Covid-19 containment zones as recommended by the authorities in Mumbai will enable users to make better decisions as they move around the city.

“This new feature strengthens our commitment towards working closely with the government to disseminate helpful, authoritative, and relevant information for people during the pandemic,” said a company spokesperson.

Maharashtra’s coronavirus tally on Wednesday reached 14,80,489 with 14,578 fresh cases coming to light, according to state health officials.

With 355 new fatalities being reported, the death toll in the state reached 39,072.

Mumbai city reported 2,848 new cases, taking its overall caseload to 2,19,961, with the death toll rising to 9,248.

Google announced a Covid-19 layer in Maps in September globally, which enables users to also access state-level Covid-19 statistics.

When a user zooms out to view an entire state, this new layer overlays the number of new COVID-19 cases (a seven-day average) indicated per 100,000 users and the trend in the number of cases in that state.

“This feature will cover all Indian states, and is also available in several other regions globally,” Google said.

To begin with, the users in Mumbai can now see Covid-19 containment zones across the city in their Google Maps app.

This will be displayed when a user in Mumbai enables the COVID-19 info’ layer, where demarcated zones will be displayed via a shaded grey area.

Google to now alert users about critical issues within apps

0

Google is set to roll out a new safety feature that will automatically issue an alert within the Google app people are using and help them address it, and the users no need to check email or phone alerts for a suspected hack or a compromise.

The new alerts are resistant to spoofing, so the users can always be sure they’re coming from Google.

“We’ll begin a limited roll out in the coming weeks and plan to expand more broadly early next year,” said Rahul Roy-Chowdhury, Vice President of Product, Privacy at Google.

Currently, Google uses Android alerts to notify people about critical issues with their Google Accounts, like a suspected hack.

“The tech giant saw a 20-fold increase in the number of people that engaged with these new notifications within an hour of receiving them, compared to email,” Roy-Chowdhury said in a blog post on Wednesday.

Safe Browsing protects more than four billion devices, Gmail blocks more than 100 million phishing attempts every day, and Google Play Protect scans over 100 billion apps every day for malware and other issues.

Google said that its refreshed Safety Centre is now live in the US and coming soon globally.

In Google Assistant, the company is going to introduce a Guest mode — a new way to use Assistant on home devices.

“With an easy voice command, you can turn on Guest mode, and your Assistant interactions while in this mode won’t be saved to your account,” said Roy-Chowdhury.

You can turn off Guest mode at any time to get the full, personalized Google Assistant experience again.

“In addition, you always have the ability to go back and delete what you said to the Assistant just using your voice”.

Google answers more than three million privacy and security questions per month, globally.

In Android 11, Google will now generate Smart Replies, including emoji recommendations, from on-device system intelligence, meaning the data is never shared with Gboard or Google.

Election for IOC chief to be held next March in Athens

0

The election of the next president of the International Olympic Committee will be held during the 137th IOC Session which will take place from March 10 to 12 next year in Athens.

The decision was taken at the virtual meeting of the IOC Executive Board on Wednesday.

“The IOC EB also approved, in the absence of current IOC President, Thomas Bach, the directives concerning the election of the IOC President that is due to be held during the 137th IOC Session. This part of the meeting was led by First IOC Vice-President Anita DeFrantz,” stated the organization on their website.

“It was agreed that the candidatures should be declared no later than 30 November 2020. In order to avoid any risk of interference with the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, now to be celebrated in 2021, and to allow for a smooth transition, it was decided that the IOC President elected during the 137th IOC Session shall take office the day after the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020,” it added.

On July 17, Bach had confirmed at the 136th IOC Session that he is ready to run for a second term in the position.

56 new Covid cases in Taj city, tally reaches 6,110

0

Fifty-six fresh coronavirus cases were reported in Agra in the last 24 hours taking the total number to 6,110, the state authorities said on Thursday.

District Magistrate P.N. Singh said so far 5,436 had recovered, while the number of active cases now was 545. The number of samples in the district has gone up to 2,07,022.

Though the daily Covid-19 sample tests continue to remain around 2,500, there has been some respite in the numbers of new cases which in September had gone up abnormally high.

With the rising graph of seasonal viral fever, dengue, and flu, doctors in Agra have advised patients not to rush for COVID tests, but consult family doctors or go to government clinics first.

Doctors said, “Patients with fever should first get the opinion of their family doctors before rushing for Covid-19 tests. Patients can get a fever from a whole lot of health issues including flu, viral fever that is seasonal, dengue, or even urine infection.”

Although a vaccine is still far away, doctors today are better equipped with medicines, equipment, and insights to deal with Covid-19, compared to the scene some months ago, but there is no room for complacency, say, doctors.

A higher level of the vigil and strict observance of social distancing and mask-wearing norms were necessary, said Advocate Vivek Sarabhoy, who runs a WhatsApp group to help Covid-19 patients with consultations, blood plasma, hospital support, and even food or medical support.

Indian Medical Association (IMA) secretary Dr. Sanjay Chaturvedi has suggested extensive studies on the post-COVID syndrome, as a few complicated cases of patients have come to light. “It has been observed that Covid-19 damages some organs and patients take a lot of time to bounce back to health even after testing negative,” Chaturvedi said.

Opener Tripathi guides KKR to close win over CSK

0

On their way to a narrow 10-run win over three-time champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) — thanks to Rahul Tripathi’s 51-ball 81 — Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) did something unusual on Wednesday. They won the toss and elected to bat for the first time since 2015 IPL, after 69 matches.

The momentum gained with the decision at the toss ultimately took them to a win, and the third place on the points table (6 points from 5 matches).

Tripathi slammed eight fours and three maximums at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium until Bravo came in and finally dismissed Tripathi in the 17th over with the help of Shane Watson.

In-form Gill (11 off 12) was the first one to depart at 37/1 followed by Nitish Rana (9) at 87/2. By the 14th over, CSK checked KKR with regular wickets as Morgan fell cheaply for seven off 10 followed by Russell who could only make two.

Dinesh Karthik 12 off 11, Pat Cummins 17 off nine as both collected 14 till the 18th over. MS Dhoni once again made a flying move to dismiss Shivam Mavi (0). Dwayne Bravo’s 3/37 made it even memorable on his birthday.

However, Kolkata was successful in restricting CSK to 157 for loss of five wickets. Faf du Plessis could only make 17 off 10 while Watson made 50 in 40 balls. Chennai were then in desperate need of 67 runs and the pressure ultimately told on skipper Dhoni, and he departed after making 11 off 12 balls, bowled by Varun Chakravarthy. His dismissal shut all hopes for his team.

Kedar Jadhav (7 not out) and Ravindra Jadeja (21 not out) couldn’t be of much help, and that resulted in CSK’s fourth loss in six matches.

Kolkata effected some changes, with Shubman Gill and Tripathi opening the batting. While Eoin Morgan and Andre Russell failed to impress, Pat Cummins helped the team to reach a respectable score of 167.

Brief scores: KKR 167 all out in 20 overs (Rahul Tripathi 81, Sunil Narine 17; Dwayne Bravo 3/37) beat CSK 157/5 wkts in 20 overs (Shane Watson 50, Ambati Rayudu 30; Andre Russell 1/18) by 10 runs

Hathras victim’s family go to court against ‘illegal confinement’

0

A petition has been filed in Allahabad High Court on behalf of the family members of the Hathras victim, alleging that the district administration has illegally confined them in their house.

The court has been requested to direct the district administration that the “family members be released from illegal confinement and allowed to move out of their house and meet people”.

This habeas corpus writ petition, filed by the family members of the victim, is listed on October 8 for hearing.

Om Prakash, who is the father of the victim, along with her mother, two brothers, and two more family members have filed the petition.

In the petition, it has been alleged that on September 29 the petitioners were illegally confined in their house by the district administration and since then they are not being allowed to meet anyone.

It has been further alleged that “though, at a later stage, a few people were allowed to meet the petitioners, the district administration is still not allowing them (the petitioners) to move out of their house at free will”.

In this petition, the petitioners have alleged that they were being prevented from meeting or communicating freely, thereby their right to freedom of speech and expression, as well as the right to receive information, is being violated.

In the petition, one Surender Kumar, claiming himself to be the national general secretary of the Akhil Bhartiya Valmiki Mahapanchayat, has stated that he was approached by the petitioners over the telephone and on behalf of them he has filed the petition.

The habeas corpus writ petition is filed before the high court when a person is illegally detained.

During the court proceedings, if the court finds that the person is illegally detained, then it can order for the release of that person.

The batsmen let the bowlers down: Dhoni

0

MS Dhoni admitted on Wednesday that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batsmen let their bowlers down in their match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), which ended in a 10-run defeat for the three-time champions at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

CSK took five wickets and conceded just 34 runs in the last four overs of the KKR innings to dismiss them for 167 but the batsmen then only managed to get to 157/5 in their innings.

“In the middle overs there was a phase where they bowled two or three good overs and after that, we lost three wickets. That was the phase we really lost it,” said Dhoni after the match.

“If we batted better from that period on the result would have been different. (Sam) Curran was really good with the ball, and I think we did well in general with the ball. 160-odd runs is something we should have chased but I think we batsmen let down the bowlers today.”

Dhoni felt that CSK was not able to find the boundary frequently enough in the last overs which led to them losing the game.

“Rotation of strike was important. At times later on I felt we weren’t able to finish, there was hardly any boundaries in the final few overs, so we need to be innovative at the end when they are continuously hitting a back of a length. That’s where we need to adapt better with the bat and I don’t think we did that,” he said.
