Apple sues firm for reselling 1 lakh devices meant for recycling

0

In a bizarre incident, Apple has sued electronic recycling company GEEP Canada for allegedly stealing and reselling nearly one lakh iPhones, iPods and Apple Watches it was supposed to destroy and recycle.

According to a report in The Logic, Apple said in a lawsuit that the resales “damaged demand new Apple products, created safety issues for consumers and hurt its brand”.

Apple is seeking full recovery of the profits made from the resale of these devices, plus $31 million Canadian dollars (US$22.7 million).

Ontario-based GEEP has denied all wrongdoing, filing a third-party counter lawsuit that claimed that three of its employees engaged in the theft without the firm’s knowledge.

Apple, however, argued that these employees were part of senior management at the company.

Apple’s lawsuit stated that the company shipped 531,966 iPhones to GEEP Canada for recycling between January 2015 and December 2017, along with 25,673 iPads, and 19,277 Apple Watches.

Approximately 18 percent or 103,845 of all those devices were reportedly discovered by Apple to “be active on carrier networks”.

Apple said that the number of stolen devices will be considerably higher since non-LTE ones wouldn’t be shown.

“At least 11,766 pounds of Apple devices left GEEP’s premises without being destroyed — a fact that GEEP itself confirmed,” Apple said in its lawsuit.

Apple is pioneering a new path to help push the recycling industry forward.

The tech giant has received nearly 1 million devices through Apple programs and its recycling robot Daisy can disassemble 1.2 million devices per year.

In 2018, the company refurbished more than 7.8 million Apple devices and helped divert more than 48,000 metric tonnes of electronic waste from landfills.

Writing by hand will make kids ‘truly smart’ in digital era

0

As kids get glued to various types of screens during digital learning, researchers now emphasize that children must receive at least a minimum of handwriting training for best learning and memory.

Results from several studies have shown that both children and adults learn more and remember better when writing by hand.

Now another study from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology confirms the same — choosing to handwrite over keyboard use yields the best learning and memory.

“The use of pen and paper gives the brain more ‘hooks’ to hang your memories on. Writing by hand creates much more activity in the sensorimotor parts of the brain,” said Professor Audrey van der Meer at NTNU.

A lot of senses are activated by pressing the pen on paper, seeing the letters you write, and hearing the sound you make while writing.

“These sensory experiences create contact between different parts of the brain and open the brain up for learning. We both learn better and remember better,” she said in a paper published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Van der Meer and her colleagues have investigated this several times, first in 2017 and now in 2020.

In 2017, she examined the brain activity of 20 students. She has now published a new study in which she examined brain activity in 12 young adults and 12 children. This is the first time that children have participated in such a study.

The participants wore a hood with over 250 electrodes attached.

The brain produces electrical impulses when it is active. The sensors in the electrodes are very sensitive and pick up the electrical activity that takes place in the brain.

The results showed that the brain in both young adults and children is much more active when writing by hand than when typing on a keyboard.

She believed that her own and others’ studies emphasize the importance of children being challenged to draw and write at an early age, especially at school.

Today’s digital reality is that typing, tapping, and screen time is a big part of children’s and adolescents’ everyday lives.

“Given the development of the last several years, we risk having one or more generations lose the ability to write by hand. Our research and that of others show that this would be a very unfortunate consequence” of increased digital activity,” Meer said.

Learning to write by hand is a bit slower process, but it’s important for children to go through the tiring phase of learning to write by hand.

The intricate hand movements and the shaping of letters are beneficial in several ways.

“If you use a keyboard, you use the same movement for each letter. Writing by hand requires control of your fine motor skills and senses. It’s important to put the brain in a learning state as often as possible,” Meer emphasized.

“If we don’t challenge our brain, it can’t reach its full potential. And that can impact school performance”.

IPL 2020: Ben Stokes set to join Rajasthan Royals

0

England all-rounder Ben Stokes is set to join Rajasthan Royals after missing an initial couple of weeks of the ongoing Indian Premier League edition in order to be with his family in Christchurch.

On Saturday, Royals posted a picture of Stokes en route to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on their official Twitter handle.

Earlier, Stokes had posted images of him with his family on Instagram with the caption: ‘goodbyes never get easier’.

The 29-year-old will have to undergo six days of quarantine on arrival in the UAE as per the Covid-19 protocols for IPL 2020.

In August, Stokes had pulled out of the Pakistan Test series midway in order to be with his family in New Zealand after his father was diagnosed with cancer. After featuring in the first Test against Pakistan earlier this month, Stokes had left for New Zealand to be with his family.

Stokes’ arrival in the UAE will be a big boost for the Royals as it would add more strength to their batting unit, which is currently heavily dependent on Sanju Samson and Steve Smith.

The likes of Jos Buttler and Robin Uthappa have not been able to perform for the Royals so far. While Uthappa has scored just 16 runs in the three innings he has played for the Royals, Buttler has scored 25 runs in the two innings he has played so far in the tournament.

Stokes has so far played 34 IPL matches for the Royals across three seasons, in which he has scored 635 runs and scalped 26 wickets.

Samsung targets to sell 1 million mini LED TVs in 2021

0

South Korean tech giant Samsung is reportedly targeting to sell two million mini-LED TVs next year.

According to market analysis firm TrendForce, Samsung will launch its new QLED TV lineup with mini-LED backlighting technology in 2021.

The lineup is expected to feature 4K resolution and consist of TVs in 55-inch, 65-inch, 75-inch, and 85-inch sizes.
The TVs are expected to offer a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, which is significantly higher than 10,000:1 that the current-generation TVs offer, thanks to Mini-LED backlighting.

Samsung’s upcoming series of mini LED-powered QLED TVs are also expected to arrive with various other improvements as well as higher brightness, better HDR, and wider color gamut

The mini LED does not offer a vastly better image quality than LCD panels, however, they are known to be more cost-effective, especially when compared to traditional OLEDs.

Meanwhile, Apple is also planning to boost the adoption of mini-LED technology thanks to increased competition among suppliers for mini-LED chips.

Atal Tunnel will give new strength to border infrastructure: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the majestic Atal Tunnel, beneath the lofty Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district, would give new strength to India’s border infrastructure.

“It is an example of world-class border connectivity. There have been demands to improve border infrastructure but for a long time, such projects either couldn’t get out of planning stage or got stuck midway,” Modi said in his address after dedicating the highway tunnel, one of the world’s most challenging and a marvel of engineering motorways, in the Himalayas to the nation.

The tunnel would be a lifeline for Ladakh and would boost border security.

Earlier, Modi inaugurated the 9.02km long Atal Tunnel from its south portal near here. It will connect Manali to the Lahaul-Spiti valley in Himachal Pradesh.

It is the longest highway tunnel in the world built at an altitude of 3,000 meters.

Modi said the Atal Tunnel, the dream of former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, is going to be “Sanjeevani Buti” for the residents of Lahaul-Spiti, especially during winters when the entire district “gets covered under snow and road connectivity through the Rohtang Pass gets snapped.

Praising the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), a wing of the Defence Ministry, Modi said, “One of our top priorities is to strengthen the international border on all sides.”

He blamed the previous government in the Centre for deliberately ignoring the projects of strategic importance.

“There is nothing more important for us than protecting the country. But the country has also seen a period when the defense interests of the country were compromised.”

“Even in the case of Atal Tunnel, if the pace of the construction continued as in the previous governments it would have been completed by 2040,” Modi, donning a Himachal cap, said.

“In the year 2002, Atalji laid the foundation stone of the approach road to the tunnel.

“After Atalji’s government, this work was forgotten. The situation was that by 2013-14, only 1,300 meters of the work for the tunnel was completed,” said Modi.

“Work on Atal Tunnel was accelerated after 2014; in just six years, we completed the work of 26 years.”

“My brothers and sisters of Himachal Pradesh can understand what it means to reduce the distance of three-four hours on the mountain with the completion of this tunnel,” he said.

Happiest that my record is broken by you: Raina to Dhoni

0

Veteran Chennai Super Kings batsman Suresh Raina has congratulated MS Dhoni after the former Indian captain became the most capped player in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

During Friday’s game against SunRisers Hyderabad, Dhoni played his 194th IPL match, surpassing Raina’s tally of 193.

Raina took to Twitter to congratulate Dhoni and said: “Congratulations Mahi Bhai at becoming the most capped IPL player. Happiest that my record is being broken by you.”

“All the best for the game today and am sure Chennai Super Kings will win this season’s IPL,” he added.

The wishes, however, didn’t work as the Dhoni-led CSK lost the match against the David Warner-led side by seven runs, thus registering their third straight defeat in the ongoing season.

During their chase of 165, Dhoni was seen struggling in the searing heat at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. However, he continued to bat and helped his team get to 157/5 in their allotted 20 overs.

Out of favor fast bowler S Sreesanth praised Dhoni and tweeted: “Hats off to MS Dhoni Bhai…even in this heat keep for 20 overs and then running (sprinting for his team) lots and lots of respect…now that’s what we call never ever giving up in toughest moments. Giving all in for his team.”

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is ranked third in the list of most-capped IPL players with 192 appearances, followed by Kolkata Knight Riders captain Dinesh Karthik (185 appearances) and Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli (180 appearances).

Dhoni, 39, retired from international cricket in August. And Raina, 33, opted out of the present tournament due to “personal reasons”.

The two senior pros have played for CSK since the first IPL edition in 2008, with the exception of two seasons in 2016 and 2017, when the Chennai-based franchise was suspended by the Supreme Court in a betting-fixing scandal. Dhoni represented Rising Pune SuperGiant and Raina played for Gujarat Lions in those two years.

Lanning, spinners star as Australia beat White Ferns in 1st ODI

0

A superb bowling display from the spinners followed by an unbeaten half-century from skipper Meg Lanning helped Australia women secure an emphatic seven-wicket win over New Zealand in the first ODI on Friday.

Electing to field, Australian bowlers first restricted the White Ferns to 180 in 49.1 overs at the Allan Border Field. Maddy Green top-scored for the visitors with a contribution of 35, followed by 32 runs from Katie Perkins and 21 runs each from Katey Martin and Hayley Jensen.

For Australia, leg-spinner Georgia Wareham (2/23) starred with the ball and she was well supported by Jess Jonassen and Sophie Molineux who both scalped two wickets apiece.

Chasing the small target, openers Rachel Haynes and Alyssa Healy gave Australia a strong start before the wicketkeeper got out after scoring 26. Lanning, who came in next, then stitched a 65-run partnership with Haynes before the latter got dismissed for 44.

However, the skipper (62*) continued with her brilliant batting as along with Beth Mooney (16) and Sophie Molineux (18*), she helped the team cross the line with more than 16 overs to spare.

The two teams will now face each other at the same venue for the second ODI on Monday.

Brief scores: New Zealand 180 all out (Maddy Green 35; Georgia Wareham 2/23) lost to Australia 181/3 (Meg Lanning 62*; Rosemary Mair 2/21) by seven wickets.

Researchers use ‘fingerprints’ tech to spot Russian hackers

0

Hackers too leave their fingerprints as they attack enterprises and individuals and cybersecurity researchers have now developed a new technique to “fingerprint” them, spotting two prolific Russian-origin sellers of Windows exploits.

The team from cybersecurity firm Check Point, when analyzing a complicated attack against one of their customers, noticed a very small 64-bit executable that was executed by the malware.

The sample contained unusual debug strings that pointed at an attempt to exploit a vulnerability on the victim machine.

Even more importantly, the sample had a leftover programme database (PDB) path.

“With the absence of any online resource with this implementation of CVE-2019-0859, we realized that we are not looking at a publicly available PoC, but rather a real-world exploitation tool. This intrigued us to dig deeper,” the researchers said in a blog post on Friday.

Generally, researchers tend to look at the people behind a specific malware family as one unbroken unit.

“It’s easier to envision that each and every component was written by a single person, team, or group. Truth is, writing advanced malware by nation-states or criminals involves different groups of people with various skills,” said Check Point.

A cyber-espionage organization of a nation-state is likely to have hundreds or even thousands of employees in different groups and branches.

In such an organization, the workload of writing the common components is broken down among specialized teams, with different ones responsible for the initial access, collecting sensitive data, lateral movement, and more.

The Check Point team looked specifically at the small 64-bit binary from the incident response case.

“It made a great candidate for us to fingerprint, as the executable was refined from code written by someone other than the exploit author.

“Moreover, the executable was separated from the main binary of the malware, an infamous crimeware, which made us believe that this exploit wasn’t developed in-house by the malware developers,” the researchers explained.

With a careful analysis of the samples, the team was able to understand which samples exploited which CVE.

“At this point, we had more than 10 CVEs that we were able to attribute to the same exploit developer, based on our fingerprinting technique alone and without further intelligence,” Check Point revealed.

Later on, public reports revealed the name of the target exploit seller: Volodya (aka Volodimir), previously known as BuggiCorp.

“It seemed we were not the only ones to track this exploit seller, as Kaspersky reported some relevant information about them on several occasions”.

According to Kaspersky, Volodya first made headlines under their “BuggiCorp” nickname, when they advertised a Windows 0-day for sale with a starting price of $95,000.

Across the years, the price went up and some of their Windows LPE 0-day exploits were sold at a price as high as $200,000.

Volodya sold exploits to both crimeware and APT groups.

“The fact that we were able to use our technique, repeatedly, to track 16 Windows LPE exploits, written and sold by two different actors, was very surprising”.

“We believe that this research methodology can be used to identify additional exploit writers. We recommend other researchers try our suggested technique and adopt it as an additional tool in their arsenal,” the researchers emphasized.

NASA’s resupply mission honouring Kalpana Chawla on way to ISS

0

A NASA resupply spacecraft named in honor of late astronaut Kalpana Chawla was on way to the International Space station (ISS) on Saturday with nearly 8,000 pounds of scientific investigations, technology demonstrations, and commercial products, and a new space toilet is part of the cargo.

Its features improve on current space toilet operations and help NASA prepare for future missions, including those to the Moon and Mars.

“The Universal Waste Management System (UWMS) demonstrates a compact toilet and the Urine Transfer System that further automates waste management and storage. The smaller footprint of the UWMS supports a possible increase in the number of crew members aboard the space station, as well as planning for future exploration missions,” NASA said in a statement on Saturday.

A new crop of vegetables was also headed to the space station.

While previous experiments have grown different types of lettuces and greens aboard the orbiting laboratory, the “Plant Habitat-02” investigation adds radishes to the mix, cultivating seeds to see how different light and soil conditions affect the growth.

“The findings could help optimize the growth of the plants in space, as well as provide an assessment of their nutrition and taste”.

A Northrop Grumman Cygnus resupply spacecraft launched on an Antares rocket was scheduled to arrive at the space station around 5.20 a.m. on Monday.

Expedition 63 Commander Chris Cassidy of NASA will use the space station’s robotic arm to capture Cygnus that will remain at the space station until mid-December before it disposes of several thousand pounds of trash as it burns up during a safe re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere.

Another investigation ‘Ammonia Electrooxidation’ onboard the spacecraft examines a process for ammonia oxidation in microgravity.

An electrochemical ammonia removal system could serve as an innovative water recovery system on long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars and provide vital drinkable water in remote and arid areas on Earth.

A medical investigation tests drugs based on messenger ribonucleic acids (mRNA) for treating leukemia.

In normal gravity, the drugs to be tested are onco-selective, meaning they can distinguish cancer cells from healthy ones.

“Researchers expect any drugs that also demonstrate this trait in microgravity could make good candidates for safer, more effective, and affordable medicines to treat leukemia and other cancers. This could improve survival rates for thousands of people every year,” NASA said.

The International Space Station Experience (ISS Experience) is also creating an immersive virtual reality series documenting life and research aboard the space station.

A new camera will be mounted to capture a spacewalk from start to finish as well as footage of Earth and the exterior of the space station.

The Cygnus spacecraft for this resupply mission is named in honor of Chawla, who made history at NASA as the first female astronaut of Indian descent.

Chawla, who dedicated her life to understanding flight dynamics, lost her life during the STS-107 mission when the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon reentering Earth’s atmosphere in 2003.

Kalpana Chawla was born in Karnal, Haryana on March 17, 1962.

She received a bachelor’s of science degree in aeronautical engineering from the Punjab Engineering College in India in 1982. She then moved to the US to pursue her education.

Chawla began her career at NASA in 1988 as a powered-lift computational fluid dynamics researcher at the Ames Research Center in California. Her work concentrated on the simulation of complex air flows encountered by aircraft flying in “ground-effect.”

President of US university tests Covid-19 positive

0

Rev. John Jenkins, the President of the University of Notre Dame in the US state of Indiana, has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, it was announced.

A message from the school sent to members of the Campus Community on Friday said: “During self-quarantine, this week, University of Notre Dame President Rev. John I. Jenkins, CSC, learned that a colleague with whom he has been in regular contact tested positive for Covid-19.

“Fr Jenkins was tested and found to be positive for Covid-19. As a result, he is entering an extended period of isolation as indicated by University medical personnel and county health officials.”

Later in a latter, the university president said in a statement: “My symptoms are mild and I will continue work from home. The positive test is a good reminder for me and perhaps for all of how vigilant we need to be.”

The confirmation came after he attended a September 26 White House event where President Donald Trump nominated conservative Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, CNN reported.

At the event, he was pictured without a mask.

On Monday, Jenkins wrote a letter to his students titled “I regret my error of judgment in not wearing a mask”, in which he apologized and said he would quarantine out of an abundance of caution in accordance with university protocols.

“I know many of you have read about the White House ceremony I recently attended. I write to express my regret for certain choices I made that day and for failing to lead as I should have.”

India’s Covid toll surpasses one lakh, tally over 64L

Anirban Lahiri stays at T7 in Sanderson Farms Championship

0

India’s Anirban Lahiri fought swirly conditions and a misbehaving driver to post a 2-under 70 and retained his overnight tied the seventh position after the end of the second round of the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Hitting only three fairways at Country Club of Jackson, the 33-year-old on Friday carded four birdies against a double bogey for a two-day total of 8-under 136 to trail leader Keegan Bradley by five shots heading into the weekend. Bradley, a four-time PGA Tour winner, fired a 65 to lead by two from J.T. Poston.

Starting from the 10th hole, Lahiri started his round nicely with birdies on Hole numbers 12, 13, and 15. He made his first gain with a 25-foot conversion and then hit exquisite approach shots to five inches and two feet for his next two birdies.

However, an error on the sixth proved costly. After missing the fairway, Lahiri landed in the greenside bunker and he needed four more shots to get into the hole for a double-bogey six before signing off with a 10-foot birdie on his last hole.

“I just didn’t hit enough fairways. The wind kept swirling and it was a guessing game between the lies and the wind all day. Lost my concentration around the turn and just had to grind it out,” said Lahiri, who is featuring in his sixth straight season on the PGA Tour.

Meanwhile, Chinese Taipei’s C.T. Pan returned a 69 which featured five birdies against two bogeys for a share of 24th position on 139 while Korea’s Si Woo Kim (69), Sungjae I’m (70), and K.H. Lee (73) all made the halfway cut set at 141.

Nearly a dozen Congress workers, including vice president Sankalp Amonkar, were detained by the police in Panaji for protesting outside a five-star hotel, where the Union Minister for Environment and Forests Prakash Javadekar was putting up for the night.

The workers were demanding a meeting with the Union Minister.

The incident occurred just after midnight on Friday. Javadekar is in Goa to conduct meetings with the farmers’ groups over the controversial farm laws which were passed by Parliament recently.

“JUNGLE RAJ in Goa – @INCGoa delegation led by Vice President @SankalpAmonkar @JanaBhandariGoa @varadmardolkar @AdvArchitNaik @RautMeghashyam @SudinNaikGoa & 10 others arrested by @DGP_Goa for seeking an appointment with @PrakashJavdekar & waiting to meet him in the hotel lobby in Panaji,” Chodankar tweeted after the Congress leaders and workers were rounded up by the police and detained at the Panaji police station.

Speaking to reporters, as the opposition party workers were being taken away to the police station, Amonkar said that the congressional delegation had arrived at the hotel here, to meet Javadekar and seek a formal appointment to discuss the Mhadei inter-state river water sharing issue.

“We are being arrested just because we want to seek an appointment with a Union Minister,” Amonkar said. Congress had in the past accused Javadekar of being partial to Karnataka, one of the two other states which are a part of the river water sharing dispute, over the Mhadei issue.

Police, however, said that the Congress workers were arrested because they insisted on meeting Javadekar in the dead of the night. “It was a preventive arrest only, to avoid a law and order situation from occurring,” a senior police official said.

Being Mohinder Amarnath: Saqib Saleem on playing the icon in ’83’

Actor Saqib Saleem knows the responsibility he shoulders while essaying Mohinder Amarnath, in a film about the 1983 cricket World Cup. He recalls being edgy before he started the film, adding that he spent a lot of time with the legendary cricketer to prepare for his role.

Saleem plays Amarnath in “83”, Kabir Khan’s Bollywood tribute to Indian cricket’s first-ever World Cup victory that casts Ranveer Singh as the team captain Kapil Dev. Amarnath, popular as Jimmy among friends and fans, was the star of India’s 1983 World Cup campaign. He won Man of the Match titles in the final as well as the semifinal.

“Before every film, there is immense self-doubt, and when you are playing a real-life character you just have to try and be as close to him so that when the people watch the film they get a glimpse of the guy. I was very edgy before I started the film. I have just been fortunate. I got to play him and I got to spend time — a lot of time — with him,” Saqib told IANS.

He added: “I have had enough lunches with him, whether in Dharamshala or London or in Bombay. He came to help me train in cricket. I’ve spoken to him about his life and experiences, and what he was thinking at that time, also about the relationship he shared with his father. He opened up to me and I realized he is just a fantastic human being.”

He may have been nervous before the shoot, but Saqib says he did not take any pressure once filming started. “Now I hope when the film comes out, people will see a bit of Jimmy Amarnath in me. The would make me really happy,” he said.

“83” was originally scheduled to hit the screens in April, but the film has been pushed to Christmas owing to the COVID outbreak.

Was he disappointed in learning that the film’s release has been pushed? “…100 percent! I am very excited about this film. The disappointment didn’t last for more than 10 days, though. One realized the world is going through a lot more at this point,” he said.

“Yes, the film is important to all of us who worked on it and to those who really want to watch it, but then there are a lot of people going through a tough time. The world is going through a tough time. The world needs healing right now,” he said.

Directed by Kabir Khan, “83” also features Tahir Raj Bhasin, Pankaj Tripathi, Boman Irani, Harrdy Sandhu, Ammy Virk, Jiiva, Sahil Khattar, Chirag Patil, and Adinath Kothare in key roles, along with Deepika Padukone as Kapil’s wife Romi Dev.
